25.01.2022 How can you promote security when it comes to sleep? Security and sleep go hand in hand. When your baby feels secure, they should be able to find sleep more easily. Like us adults some babies need help to feel comfortable & secure in their sleep environment. Some ways in which we can encourage this as parents are by keeping things familiar and consistent. Such as by placing your baby to sleep in a familiar room and in a familiar place ie their cot. By introducing quiet time... prior to sleep with a few consistent pattern of events, such as changing their nappy, dimming the lights and having a cuddle/lullaby. With this they will develop an understanding of what is to come and expected of them. Being available to support them and respond to them if needed will also re affirm their sense of security and promote calm which is conducive for finding sleep. #sleep #babysleep #secure #settling #completelybaby #consistent #predictable #routine #quiet #calm #trusting #respond #sleepspace #bonding #familiar See more

24.01.2022 Out & about in nature! How much fun can stepping stones, sticks and bushes be? So much fun for a busy, capable toddler! Left to her own devices, she explores with intent and purpose. Navigating her own way through the garden, she makes choices and explores using her senses. She seems so content just being allowed to just be. No interruptions, no guidance needed, just being free! #nature #play #explore #sensory #toddler #uninterrupted #choice #confidence #capable #education #completelybaby #freedom

23.01.2022 Exploring music in the home. Fancy letting your toddler explore rhythm, sound & beat? Go and raid your kitchen cupboards and pull out some pots & pans, a few wooden spoons too or anything thats safe to hit them with! Leave them out and see what happens. You could even place them on a low table so they can stand and explore them. You could also join in too and share in this experience together. #musicmaker #toddlerlife #completelybaby #education #sensory #rhythm #beat #movement #sound #creative #resourceful #explore #play #capable #independent

23.01.2022 Is your infant or toddler struggling to sleep whilst in child care? Here are my tips to promoting your little one to sleep in this environment! If your baby is about to start in child care, if you can, start slow! It is more gentle on everyone involved. Ideally drop your little one off in between their naps for ‘short & sweet’ play visits. This will allow them opportunity to build up a sense of security & attachment with their Educators prior to them attempting to settle them... for sleep. After those short days, when they are more familiar, then try & introduce day sleep. Prior to your baby starting care, share as much information about your child: what calms them; how do they settle for sleep; their sleep patterns; what are their tired signs; how do they wind down before naps; what do they sleep in? Foster that partnership between home & child care by working together with the Educators. Keeping consistent with settling and sleep patterns is the goal! It helps if you can share information on a daily basis at drop off about how your child slept overnight, and what to expect for day sleep that day. Bear in mind that sleeping in a different setting can take time and this length of time varies between individuals. Some infants/toddlers may need more support initially to settle for sleep in a new space and with time this support can be reduced as your child manages to settle by themselves more easily. Do you have any questions about sleep in child care? #hottip #parentsolutions #sleep #settling #childcare #sleepenvironment #promotingsleep #honestmother #goslow #youdoyou #gentleapproach #guidedbybaby #ittakesavillage #babysleeptips #gotosleep #gentlesleepcoach #sydneyparents #supportbaby #transition #awareness #attachment #babynap #wellbeing #partnerships #informed #communicationiskey #consistentapproach #uniquechild #supportasneeded #relationships

22.01.2022 Preparing your baby for sleep: Every child is unique, and when it comes to relaxing and letting go some find it easier than others. What can you do to make settling for sleep easier? Well, by talking to your baby and fostering that communicative relationship between you both you will help them feel secure & confident about what is about to happen next. You may say now we are going to have a story and then Mummy will give you a cuddle and place you in your crib for a rest.... By creating a predictable pattern of events leading up to sleep and moving through these calmly and slowly this will also help your baby to relax and slow down with you. Talking through their emotions and what they may be feeling will also provide them with the acknowledgment and reassurance they are searching for. You may respond to them crying saying I can see you are upset, I am here for you, I know you are finding this difficult. Ultimately you are giving them the respect they need at a time when your baby may be feeling really vulnerable. Letting go of their security blanket ie you, takes time, patience and practice and communication can only support this. #sleep #baby #toddler #settling #communication #respect #predicatable #responding #lettinggo #unique #completelybaby #sleepconsultant See more

22.01.2022 Some useful insights into Toddler milks...

22.01.2022 It can be hard. But if we can hold back a little and listen, it can really be invaluable! When you are settling your baby for sleep & they cry out, what does that cry sound like? Is it escalating or tapering off? When appropriate, are we giving them the space to try & manage by themselves? Magda Gerber also referred to wait being the magic word when it comes to infant care. Keen to read more about this word? Take a look at this write up https://www.janetlansbury.com//the-parenting-magic-word-1/

21.01.2022 Talking with your baby is so important! From the minute babies are born, they are listening! The sound of familiar voices will be reassuring to them. Talking through daily patterns/rituals can not only help to calm your baby but also help to slow down & reassure you. Talking with your baby from birth promotes language & communication skills. Observe your baby’s response, they will be communicating back to you in their own unique way! #babylanguage #babycommunication #talkingw...ithbaby #daydot #frombirth #prenatal #postnatal #sydneyparents #sydney #communication #reassurance #slowingdown #parenttips #parentsolutions #wellbeing #babylistening #nonverbalcues #observebaby #expectantparents #newbaby #bringingbabyhome #daybyday #babylove #earlyeducationandchildcare #educaringapproach #babybraingrowth #babygirl #babyboy #northshoremums #northshore See more

21.01.2022 What are the basic checks leading up to your baby’s sleep time? Let’s go back to basics! Ask yourself, do they have a wet/soiled nappy? Are they hungry? Are they too hot or too cold? Is your baby settled & comfortable in what they are sleeping in? It’s worthwhile ticking off these checks at the start, as sometimes they can be the reason for your little one not settling. Babies have a certain knack of timing things perfectly! No sooner have you placed your baby down for a nap with a clean nappy, and then minutes later you found they have soiled it! Helping your baby to feel comfortable & calm in preparation for sleep will help support your settling process. #settlingforsleep #babysleeping #simplechecks #trustyourgut #backtobasics #comfortable #calm #completelybaby #sleepconsultant #dailyparenting #sydneymum #babycaretips #myview #justbaby

20.01.2022 ‘Respect’ & ‘Sensitive Observation’ - these two key basic principles of RIE (The Educaring Approach) tie in beautifully when it comes to settling & sleep for your infant or toddler. If we can respect that each child has their own unique ability to be able to settle for sleep. Whether that means they can comfortably drift off to sleep or that they may require some support to calm themselves in order to be in state conducive to sleep. Respecting that each day may vary with the...ir sleep patterns & that your baby will let you know how they are feeling & that acknowledging this is so important! By taking the time to observe & ‘get to know’ your baby in the early days, it can so beneficial! The more we observe, the more we understand (RIE). It can help you develop an understanding of what your baby’s tired signs look like! Supporting you with learning about their needs and capabilities. You may also begin to observe certain sleep patterns evolving & times when your baby may be more sleepy or equally find it more challenging to find sleep in the day. Both these principles are so powerful!

20.01.2022 Self care! How important is this? So important! To be able to care for our little ones we have care for ourselves too! Try and make time for yourself, its a priority. Whether it be a walk, coffee, seeing a friend or some sleep. Please reach out for support & make time for YOU.

20.01.2022 So should I really change my sleeping baby’s nappy? This is a very common topic of conversation for many expectant and new parents! Would you believe that such a small thing can actually make a big difference in the world of baby sleep and settling. The quick answer from my experience is no, unless they have soiled their nappy or you know that your baby has uncomfortable nappy rash. That said there are some considerations and further questions that I have found parents may ha...ve, so for that reason I just published an article on this exact topic on my blog. 19.01.2022 Wondering what to do with your infant/toddler on a rainy day? Why not try putting on that raincoat & jumping up and down in muddy puddles for a start! Or if youre feeling musical, grab the pots and pans out of the cupboard & let your little one go for it! Explore beats & rhythm, you could introduce concepts such as tempo and tone. Hide & seek around the house can also be a big hit, or even try hiding objects and going to find them together until they grasp the concept. Placi...ng different fabrics in various containers or boxes for them to pull out & explore is another option. 18.01.2022 A lovely reminder helping you through those challenging days....

18.01.2022 Sleep routines! Wondering what this is all about? I like to use the word patterns instead of routines. Routines often imply something that is fixed or inflexible! First off, in the first three months try & be guided by your baby, following their cues for feeding & sleep. Your baby is adjusting, growing and needs your support to do just this. It is very normal for the first few months to be without patterns. At around 12 weeks or even later, you may begin to notice your ba...by naturally developing their own unique rhythms and patterns. To get a clearer picture of this, it may help to take a ‘sleep diary’ over a period of a week or so. Being flexible with your baby is crucial, as their hunger & sleep needs can change daily! If you can bear this in mind, then it helps you not to put too much pressure on yourself or your little one. To promote patterning, create a consistent set of events around these key times, such as settling for sleep with a nappy change, lullaby and swaddle. Your baby will gradually understand what is coming next and anticipate this. Consider your family dynamic, and what you need to do on a day to day basis. You may need to drop siblings off at school, or go for a run - be realistic in your expectations. Tweaking a few things to accommodate everyone is often what it takes to create a daily pattern for you all to feel comfortable with. Finally, watch your infants cues, what are they telling you? You will be best guided by this & not the clock! Do you have any questions about your babies patterns? #newmama #babyroutine #patterning #babysleep #gentleparenting #hottip #parentsolutions #flexible #unique #fourthtrimester #guidedbybaby #sydneyparent #localsupport #ittakesavillage #informed #daybyday #realisticgoals #happymumma #wellbeing #parenthelp #gentlesleepcoach #honestmother #babynap #kindtoeachother #babyadjusting #lifeoutsidethewomb #babycues #individuality #workingtogether #partnership

13.01.2022 Please share this post to help us get the word out! Many parents experiencing perinatal mental health challenges feel overwhelmed, confused, isolated and ashamed about how they’re feeling. If this is you, try to remember that these thoughts are common, you are not alone and that help is available. It can be hard to recognise that something is wrong and it takes courage to seek help. Community expectations and sti...gma can make it difficult to acknowledge that you are struggling and seek the support you need. But it’s important to get help early so you can get support to take the first steps to recovery. That’s the best outcome for you as well as your baby and partner. Admitting you need help and seeking treatment or advice is not a sign of weakness. It shows that you want the best for yourself and your family. It’s important for expecting and new parents who are worried about their emotional and mental wellbeing to seek support. They can speak with a trusted health professional such as a doctor or family health nurse, or call PANDA’s free National Perinatal Mental Health Helpline. 09.01.2022 Is your baby struggling with settling for sleep? There can be several factors associated with this. It can be really stressful and challenging for both you and baby if you are faced with this situation. Some of these factors may be: your baby has become overtired, your baby is unable to calm themselves down, your baby has not being awake for their optimal awake time, your baby is not quite ready for sleep and finally your baby is over stimulated. If you can be aware of these... it can really support you with settling and sleep. I created this infographic to help parents better identify the reasons why their baby might be resisting sleep. 08.01.2022 Night time waking: It can be so hard when you hear that everyone else’s baby is ‘sleeping through’! As a parent, it can make you question just about everything. Just remember night time waking for infants and toddlers is normal! Infants need to wake overnight to gain the nutrition necessary for them to grow! ... Did you know that breast milk is more easily digested than formula. Breast fed babies may be likely to wake more frequently therefore to re fuel! Your infants appetite just like yours can vary daily, so try and be guided by their needs one day at a time. Infants and toddlers are all so unique in their feeding requirements, with some infants feeding less amounts than others and being content and settled with this. 07.01.2022 Sleep Associations: What does this mean? It’s a term used to describe what an infant or toddler associates with sleep. Sleep Associations can be classified as either dependent or independent. Dependent being ones that require some support from an adult and independent being ones that don’t. ... The associations we want to promote when it comes to sleep are therefore the independent ones! Independent sleep associations may be things such as white noise, a dark room and a security object. Examples of dependent sleep associations are patting, singing, rocking or feeding your baby for them to be able to fall asleep. If you can encourage your baby to fall asleep using independent sleep associations the less likely it will be that you will have to step in as they move between sleep cycles. #sleepassociations #sleepcycles #selfsoothe #whitenoise #sleepenvironment #parentsolutions #parenttip #honestmother #completelybaby #sleepconsultant #quietnights #informed #healthysleephabits #dimthoselights #sydneyparent #sleeptip #gentlesleepcoach #sleepthroughthenight #wellbeing #happymum #babynap #ittakesavillage #evidencebased #supportbaby #independentbaby #babysteps #sleepgoals #parentgoals

06.01.2022 The value of outdoor play! Sitting & observing Athena this afternoon, I watched as she explored with confidence & such purpose. Providing her with uninterrupted play allowed me to understand so much about her evolving interests and personality. I trusted her to explore independently, allowing her to challenge herself & make decisions. I was readily available if she needed me but otherwise left her to just be. 06.01.2022 Over-tiredness! How & why does this impact babies sleep? Did you know that when your baby gets overtired, the stress hormone cortisol is produced making it harder for them to fall asleep. This often becomes a vicious circle with them finding it more difficult to calm down resulting in further production of the hormone. If your baby is overtired their quality of sleep may also be impacted leading to increased waking overnight and shorter naps. Understanding those age appropriate awake times & your babies tired signs should help you to find that window to begin the wind down before your little one gets overtired. Get in touch if you are struggling with this at home. #sleep #overtired #settling #baby #sleepconsultant #hormones #physiology #awaketime #tiredsigns #winddown #bettersleep

06.01.2022 Toddlers & settling for sleep: Struggling with those bedtime battles? Here are some suggestions: Introduce a few simple pattern of events leading up to their sleep, before day naps & at bedtime. This ‘wind down’ should only take around twenty minutes, no longer than half an hour! Try and involve your toddler in this process! This will make them feel capable and empowered. Perhaps they could choose two to three short stories; could they help draw the curtains and dim the ligh...ts? Encourage them to choose a ‘security object’ to take to sleep with them, a teddy perhaps. You may find creating a little photo book of your child’s day including sleep times helpful, which you can then refer to with them whilst settling. Remember to prepare your child, as this will reassure them, promoting security. Give a few clear, simple instructions about what’s going to happen & when. Expect your toddler to challenge this as that’s completely normal, but try & stay calm and confident in your approach. Give them your ‘sleepy cue’ when leaving them, sleepy time. 06.01.2022 Day & Night! How can you help your baby understand the difference? You can start to gently guide your baby from the beginning. Daytime: keep it light, open those curtains! Put the lights on if necessary. When baby is awake, spend time interacting together. Whilst feeding engage with your baby. Try to keep normal noises in place, such as the washing machine, vacuum cleaner & radio. Get out and about together in the daylight for some fresh air. Nighttime: close the curtains, ...and keep it quiet as you settle baby for sleep. If you can, have a pattern of events leading up to bedtime ie. bath, massage, night clothes, bed. When feeding keep things quiet, lights dim or off with minimal interactions. Make it as brief as possible & only change their nappy if necessary. These little cues over time will gradually promote their understanding of this concept. #daynight #sleep #newborn #baby #bodyclock #completelybaby #sleepconsultant #gentle #guide #cues #startearly See more

04.01.2022 Respect & Sensitive Observation - these two key basic principles of RIE (The Educaring Approach) tie in beautifully when it comes to settling & sleep for your infant or toddler. By taking the time to observe & get to know your baby in the early days, it can so beneficial! The more we observe, the more we understand (RIE). It can help you develop an understanding of what your babys tired signs look like! Supporting you with learning about their needs and capabilities. You may also begin to observe certain sleep patterns evolving & times when your baby may be more sleepy or equally find it more challenging to find sleep in the day. Both these principles are so powerful! #rie #educaringapproach #completelybaby #sleep #settling #sleepconsultant #respect #sensitiveobservation #unique #slowdown #understand #empowering #confidentparenting

04.01.2022 Its World Breastfeeding Week 2020! The theme being support breastfeeding for a healthier planet. To share my story, I was fortunate enough to breastfeed both my daughters for over a year. However, this didnt come without its challenges! Like any new skill, it took practice and patience, which is hard when you are sleep deprived! I sought professional support early on to help me on my way. There were times when I felt like not going on, with the pain initially of latching ...and then mastitis with my second little lady, most likely due to her tongue tie. But I managed to overcome this, being very grateful for the experience it gave me. I honestly miss it, the moments we shared, the flexibility it gave me, the health benefits to both myself & my children. Thank you ABA and to those wonderful LCs who were there to support and guide me. Also to my hubbie for keeping me well nourished & for those late night hot chocolates!#wbw2020 #completelybaby #breastfeedingmother #nutrition #guidance #practicemakesperfect #lactationsupport #rest #eatwell #toughtimes #persverance #bonding #health #breastfeedingassociationaustralia See more

04.01.2022 Watering the garden! A lovely opportunity to promote love & respect of our natural environment. Toddlers thrive when being given the opportunity to be responsible for certain events! This experience will empower them, providing time for them to make decisions and experiment for themselves. You can also encourage understanding of measurement by talking about whether their container is full or empty and is it heavy or light? By talking through which pot to water and why, you will also be setting some simple directions for your child to follow. #wateringplants #toddlerlife #nature #education #completelybaby #waterplay #responsibility #appreciation #science #concentration #empowerment #decisionmaking #sustainability

03.01.2022 Is your baby catnapping? If so, your baby may be waking for various reasons such as sleep associations, hunger or over tiredness. First off, when are you settling your baby for sleep? Are you following the clock or being guided by your baby? I find both of these things are important in finding the optimum time for their sleep & avoiding over tiredness. Having an understanding of their age related sleep requirements & awake times is helpful. But it is also equally importan...t to observe your baby, being led by their behaviour and trust in this if not more than the clock. Also worth taking into account what your baby has been doing during that awake time, level of activity etc. So many things to think of, they dont make it easy! If you can try & place your baby to sleep in the first few months shortly after a feed, then this will help rule out hunger. To promote your baby sleeping longer than one sleep cycle try to avoid them falling asleep whilst feeding, rocking or patting as this is what they will look for when they wake to fall back asleep again. If they need it to settle then offer them support this way but try encouraging them to fall asleep on their own once they are calm. #catnapping #settling #sleep #consultant #completelybaby #hunger #overtiredness #sleepassociations #trust #behaviour #guidedbybaby See more

03.01.2022 The value of trust! When it comes to infant & toddler education and care, if we can place our trust in our little ones its amazing what unfolds. I understand this can be daunting at times, but the benefits are rife. Through careful observation of their capabilities it allows us to place trust in them to explore independently, what they feel comfortable to do. Being available to step in when necessary to assist in them achieving their goals. What a wonderful & simple way of p...romoting self confidence, building self esteem and identity. When we look at sleep, trusting your infants behaviour is so valuable in helping to understand their sleep patterns and needs when it comes to settling. By having trust at the base of your caregiving & interactions it can ultimately promote such a unique relationship between both parent/care giver & child. #trust #education #care #baby #toddler #capable #confidence #relationships #self esteem #competelybaby #sleep #settling #development #consultant See more

02.01.2022 Sleep....what to expect in the first 12 weeks? So....youve just had a baby! Congratulations! Such an overwhelming rush of emotions, a feeling of immense love but perhaps anxiety and fear? I remember this feeling like it was yesterday. When it comes to settling & sleep in the first three months, if you can go into this new chapter with some flexibility, it will help you no end. Infants vary just like adults with their daily requirements for sleep and their mood may also vary ...day by day. This means, settling your baby for sleep on some days may be easier than it is on others. In these first few months your baby is looking to you/their carer to support & help them find sleep as they simply cannot physically & emotionally get there by themselves. This is all very normal, try not to put too much pressure on yourself or your baby. With time, and with loving and consistent responses, your baby will begin to feel secure and gradually learn that skill of calming to be able to fall asleep by themselves. #fourthtrimester #sleepandsettling #infants #completelybaby #sleepconsultant #circleofsecurity #aaimhi #flexibility #onedayatatime #nurture #respond #consistent #love #findsleep See more

02.01.2022 Toddlers love role play! A lovely caring activity is baby doll washing. Heres Athena trying to make sense of the world by following what her parents do. She is using her imagination & creativity to wash her baby this morning. You can see her picking up the cloths and washing the dolls face. She even tries to naturally communicate with the doll and express her emotions and feelings. All you need is a tub, soapy water, a cloth, a towel for drying the baby. You could even add in a toothbrush or comb. 01.01.2022 My hot sleep tip when it comes to settling your infant or toddler! One of the most beneficial tips I give my families is to - support their little one to sleep if they need it, just until they are calm. Once they are calm and settled, to step back and observe them. Ask yourself, how is my baby responding? Trust in your child to guide you as to what to do next. Try & avoid ‘settling them to sleep’ as much as you can. Instead our goal is trying to promote them to fall asleep ...by themselves. As time goes on, and your baby is settling more easily, you reduce the level of support given to baby. It can be an overwhelming feeling letting go & trusting in your baby. How do you feel about doing this? #hottip #babysleeptip #sydneymum #babysettling #lettinggo #trustinbaby #observebaby #calmbaby #fallingasleep #newmama #sleepthrough #goslow #parenttip #babysleepcoach #parenthelp #parentsolutions #confidentparenting #supporttosleep #respondtobaby #sydneyparent #newparent #sleepgoals #recognisingfeelings #supportbaby #selfsoothetosleep #honestmother #selfawarenes #takesavillage #sleepconsultant #completelybaby

01.01.2022 This quote speaks volumes when it comes to infant & toddler care! As a parent and practitioner I have witnessed first hand how invaluable it is to slow down when interacting with & learning about babies. The art, and it really is an art! of slowing down especially in those first few months allows for us to really develop an understanding of our little ones. Babies communicate from birth. ... How do we begin to understand what our babies are telling us? The answer is, as Magda Gerber said, Observe more, do less. Of course we must be available for them, but by trying to not interfere, we are able to really build a deep understanding of what our babies are telling us in that moment. We also begin to learn about their temperament and personality. Now, when we look at sleep & settling, so many things may start to become more apparent if you can slow down. You may find it easier to observe: How your baby behaves when they get tired? How they like to be calmed leading up to sleep? How they respond to being left without you? What happens when they become overtired? All of the above factors will help you when it comes to settling & sleep. The key is trying to see the world from your babies eyes!
