22.01.2022 Your guide to breastfeeding safely during the COVID-19 pandemic.

21.01.2022 Breastfeeding protects baby when they are sick, and when their family is sick - please share this information with those who may need it. Our resources are being updated frequently. Links to our statement on Continuing to Nurse Your Baby Through Coronavirus (2019-nCoV; COVID-19) and Other Respiratory Infections, in 14 languages plus updates, infographics and other resources here - https://www.llli.org/coronavirus-resources... There is a growing body of research showing babies benefit from multiple and diverse immunologic proteins, including antibodies, provided in human milk, particularly through direct breastfeeding. Those who become infected shortly before giving birth and then begin breastfeeding, and those who become infected while breastfeeding, will produce specific secretory IgA antibodies and many other critical immune factors in their milk to protect their nursing infants and enhance their infants’ own immune responses. At this time, these immunologic factors will aid their infants’ bodies to respond more effectively to exposure and infection. Following good hygiene practices will also help reduce transfer of the virus. If someone who is breastfeeding becomes ill, it is important not to interrupt direct breastfeeding. The baby has already been exposed to the virus by the mother and/or family and will benefit most from continued direct breastfeeding. In an extreme circumstance, if an interruption of breastfeeding is deemed medically necessary, hand expressing or pumping the milk is encouraged. In such cases, the expressed milk, which contains multiple immune factors, may be fed to the baby to help prevent the baby from getting the infection or to help reduce the severity and duration of an infection if the baby does get sick.

19.01.2022 With the rapidly evolving fears surrounding Covid-19, I have put into place precautions to protect my clients. 1. I will continue to support women in their homes with lactation support. 2. All baby-101, pre-birth breastfeeding and hypnobirthing classes will be either online or one to one with each family. 3. Universal precautions will be utilised with all lactation clients as per guidelines. 4. In order to protect all families I will be asking whether anyone in the family ...has any signs and symptoms or has had contact with anyone with Covid-19 prior to visits. If anyone has breast milk that they wish to donate and want it to go directly to a family, I will keep a list of clients that may need to use formula and cannot get what they need. Please contact me [email protected] Stay safe everyone! Danielle x

17.01.2022 URGENT: Donations for the Human Milk Emergency Reserve.. Please see our website on how to donate.. www.mothersmilkbank.com.au Mothers Milk Bank Charity urgently... calls for donations to establish a human milk emergency reserve. This reserve is of particular relevance for vulnerable communities, where the feeding of infant formula in the presence of pathogen exposure leads to a 5-6 times higher mortality in infants under 2 months (Lancet 2008, see below). This figure is close to that seen following the 2009 swine flu pandemic when Indigenous Australians, made up 11% of all identified cases and had a six-fold death rate compared with non-Indigenous Australians[across all age groups]and recently drawn attention to by Dawn Casey, the deputy CEO of the National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation. There is currently no provision for infants in the community. ‘NSW Health [as is the case in all other states] is focussed on providing pasteurised donor human milk to vulnerable premature babies, those born less than 32 weeks gestational age or of a very low birth weight (i.e. <1500 grams). The human milk emergency reserve gives food security to newborn infants in need of breastmilk. The stock needs to be accrued BEFORE the emergency. @mothersmilkbank_australia For more information or donation process please see our website www.mothersmilkbank.com.au

16.01.2022 Hi Danielle here. I will continue to visit women in their homes, using precautions and screening. Hospitals are encouraging mums to leave quite quickly after birth at this time. This leaves very little time for education and assistance with learning how to care for baby and breastfeeding. I would like to offer a free baby-101 session/the 4th trimester session in conjunction with every lactation consultation booked. If women prefer I can also do zoom consults. www.completemidwifery.com

04.01.2022 MY TOP TIPS FOR CHOOSING THE RIGHT LACTATION CONSULTANT - ALWAYS ask if your breastfeeding expert is exactly that - an expert. - Ensure that your consultant is a registered IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant). This is the GOLD standard for advice and help. A breastfeeding specialist can sometimes be a fancy term for someone who has not gained this gold standard. Don’t be fooled! - Talk/text/email your consultant to ensure that your needs will be met. ...Are follow up phone calls, questions and concerns included in the price you pay? Or will you have to pay extra? - Do you click with your consultant and feel like you are being heard and your concerns taken seriously? You pay good money for help and you are entitled to a professional service that leaves you feeling empowered. - Make sure you get a plan from your consultant so that you have a clear understanding of the direction you are heading for. - write down any questions you have so you can address them during your consultation. Sometimes all of the emotions come flooding in when you feel someone gets you and you may forget much of what you wanted to ask! See more

02.01.2022 Under stage 4 restrictions, as both a registered midwife and lactation consultant, I am still able to provide the service of a home visit. Please contact me on 0414886455. Danielle

01.01.2022 I will be continuing to do home visits to as many new families as I can after screening. Because community centres and breastfeeding clinics are not being held at the current time, I am trying to help as many new mums and dads as possible. To protect all families gown, gloves and mask are worn and temperatures of both Mum, dad and baby are taken prior to the consultation taking place. Please. If you would like a visit, advise if you have had a cough, cold or temperature in the past 14 days, or have been overseas in the past 30 days. Let’s protect everyone in the community!
