24.01.2022 Since about the age of 2, Ella has been receiving Growth Hormone therapy, which is administered daily via injections into the body. Human growth hormone is effective not only in increasing height, but also in decreasing body fat, increasing muscle mass, improving weight distribution, increasing stamina and also bone mineral density in PWS. This was initially a very expensive treatment, coming in at approximately $500 per month, which Ellas parents paid for out of their own ...pockets. Around the age of 4, Ella finally qualified to have GHT covered under the PBS (Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme) and just recently, it has been approved for use in adults with PWS who meet certain criteria. Conn3cted will be going orange once again for the month of May, to raise awareness for Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS). As many of you already know, we choose to support this cause for Ella (daughter of our CXO & Partner Emily), who was born with PWS. With social distancing rules in place, this years efforts will be noticeably different to previous years. There will be no Finding 15 Walk or the tradit...ional end of month morning tea, but we can all still Go Orange for PWS on Friday 29th May and were grateful we can still use the power of social media to spread awareness. 16.01.2022 Apart from Speech Therapy, Ella is also busy with fortnightly sessions of Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy (OT). Ellas physio sessions have been focusing on her gross motor skills including navigating stairs, tighter areas and her dynamic balance. In OT, Ella has been learning to become more independent, specifically around personal care. This includes getting ready for school independently, being able to navigate buttons and has just recently been successful in learni...ng how to use cutlery with the correct grasp (see video). Recently, the focus has been around building ongoing confidence with social skills and friendships as well as recognising her emotions and responding appropriately. What comes somewhat easily to others, Ella has to work really hard at learning... but look at that smile when she achieves the simplest of tasks. 15.01.2022 Thanks to the combination of hyperphagia (constant hunger), low muscle tone and an extra slow metabolism, PWS is recognised as the most common genetic cause of life-threatening childhood obesity. Ella could be on a diet with a third of the calories as everyone else her age, but she needs to work 3 times harder to keep her weight down. With COVID-19 and lockdown restrictions, many of Ellas usual activities such as dancing, swimming and her twice weekly gym sessions have bee...n put on hold. So, to keep her active, Ella has been going on bush walks with family and increasing the amount of laps she walks of the dog park! In conjunction with Prader-Willi Research Foundation Australia, the PWS community are sharing videos of how theyre keeping active during social isolation, with the #PRADERWILLIMOVESMAY challenge. 10.01.2022 Each year we participate in Jersey Day to raise awareness about organ and tissue donation. Jersey Day was created in memory of Nathan Gremmo, who was hit by a car on August 30, 2015 and lost his life the following day. He became an organ donor and saved the lives of six people: five young adults and a baby. This special day gets bigger every year and were happy to support this important cause!... #jerseyday #donatelife

One of the challenges that Ella faces on a daily basis is trouble communicating. This is due to PWS related developmental delays, learning difficulties as well as Ella's overall low muscle tone. Ella has been doing weekly speech therapy sessions since starting school to address her speech and language disorder, as well as to help improve her soci...al skills. This video demonstrates just a snippet of what shes working on in her sessions.
