25.01.2022 Phonological awareness What is it and why is it important? Phonological awareness (in short - PA) is the ability to identify, blend, segment, and manipulate sounds in words. It is an important skill children need to develop before reading as it enables children to put sounds together to form words for reading. This is essential to develop childrens decoding skills - the ability to look at the word (e.g., cat), knowing the sounds of the individual letters (i.e, /k/ /a/ /t/) a...nd put them together to read a word (i.e. cat ). This opens the door for the child to access the meaning of the word in a sentence or text. #phonologicalawareness #decoding #decodingdyslexia #readingisfundamental #reading #languagetherapy #dyslexia #dyslexiaawareness #dyslexiaeducation #speechies #schoolbasedspeechie #speechpathologist #literacystations

20.01.2022 Our tip number 2 on facilitating second language development is to make it fun! Children learn best through play, they are more willing to learn and use the second language while playing a fun game using that language. If your child is in the early stage of learning a new language, you may consider games like bingo, fishing game or bowling game that touches on names of items in the second language. ... If your child is an intermediate learner, you may consider book sharing, watching and discussing cartoons in the second language, or Simon says games to consolidate that language. These are just some of my suggestions Feel free to be creative as you know your child best! Id like to know what games your child enjoys playing too! #bilinguallearning #speechtherapy #bilingualspeechtherapist #bilingualspeechies #speechies #secondlanguage #languagetherapy

17.01.2022 Our tongue is a very important structure that is essential for talking, eating, and drinking. A tongue tie could restrict an individuals tongue mobility for clear articulation. For example, retraction of our tongue facilitates articulation of all sounds in English except the /th/ sound (as in thumb or this). Also, tongue tip elevation is required to say the following sounds clearly - t, d, n, s, z, ch, and j. These are just examples to show how important is our tongue f...or clear articulation. Children with a history of tongue tie might have restricted tongue movement which could significantly reduce the clarity of their words. A speech assessment is recommended if your child has a history of tongue tie and his/her speech is unclear at his/her age (typically, a 4 year old childs speech is 90% clear to an unfamiliar adult). #tonguetie #tonguetieandspeech #articulationnation #speechtherapy #tonguemobility #tonguemovement #intelligibility

17.01.2022 1st tip to supporting multilingual development - Exposure! By exposure I mean not only letting your child sitting in front of the computer or TV to watch hours of cartoons in another language. That is one way to give language input to your child, but mastering a language requires to ability to use it for communication. So, the main point here is to have a little chat with your little ones what they watched afterwards. You can ask the most common wh-questions (e.g., who, what... doing, what, where). For older kids you can also ask when, why, and how questions if applicable. These little chats can help boosting your little ones understanding of the content, the words they learned in the cartoon, and most importantly give them opportunities to practice using that language to describe or explain ideas. #multilingual #bilingualacquisition #languagedevelopment #promotelanguage #languagelearning #languagelearningtips #speechtherapy #languagetherapy #bilingualspeechtherapy #speechies #bilingualspeechpathologist #bilingualspeechtherapy #slp

16.01.2022 It’s our language tips Wednesday! Modelling and recasting are two great strategies to mould children’s language. modelling means show your child how you’d like to do or say something, e.g., point to a cup and say ‘cup’ or in the other other language you’re teaching him/her recasting means repeating what your child said incorrectly in the correct form e.g., if your child said dup as cup (ie using the wrong sound /d/ for /k/, you can say, yup that’s a /k/ /k/ cup). ... One thing to really keep in mind is that both modelling and recasting aim to provide repetition of the CORRECT form of the target word to support and shape your child’s language and speech system. #speechies #recasting #languaglearning #speechpathology #bilingualspeechpathologist #bilingual #languagelearning #languagelearningtips

16.01.2022 Vocabularies! 15.01.2022 Sight word recognition - the ability to access the sound and meaning of a print word during reading. Learning sight words can help learners read words with irregular spelling (e.g., said, come) and words with more complex spelling rules (e.g., toy, eat). Developing a broad sight word bank facilitated childrens reading efficiency, in turns assisting childrens comprehension as there is a higher chance of maintaining the content they read for comprehension. It is important to note that sight words develop as they are exposed to the target word frequently, children need instruction in deciding skills to facilitate development of sight word learning. #sightwordrecogntion #reading #dyslexia #phonics #literacy #speechies #speechlathologist #schoolbasedspeechie

14.01.2022 Since children are equipped with the capacity to learn multiple languages at a young age, they are ready to learn anytime. There are two types of second language learners - simultaneous or sequential. Simultaneous acquisition means children are exposed to and learn both languages at the same time. This is very common in families where parents speaks a different language to their child, or they speak one language to their child and the child is being speak to another languag...e at child care. Sequential acquisition means that one language is acquired before another. This can be commonly seen in new migrant families where their home country does not speak the same language. No matter which acquisition pattern the child is exposed to, they key for language acquisition is repeated exposure, and opportunities to use them for meaningful communication. #secondlanguageacquisition #esl #languageacquisition #multilinguals #speechtherapy #languagetherapy #speechies #speechlanguagetherapy #slp #learning

10.01.2022 Letter-sound correspondence refers to the ability to say the sound(s) of letters (e.g., letter a for short /a/ or long /ae/ sounds) and letter combinations (e.g., ch, sh). Knowing the links between letters and sounds helps children to recognise and say the sounds in words for reading. This is an important skill especially for reading unfamiliar words where children can put together the individual sounds to learn or consolidate the written form of a newly learned word. #lettersoundcorrespondence #decodingskills #phonics #literacyskills #dyslexia #dyslexiaeducation #reading #readingfundamental #speechies #schoolbasedspeechie #literacytherapy #readingandwriting #spelling #speechtherapy #speechpathology #speechpathologists

06.01.2022 Tongue tie affects both the baby and mommy! As tongue tie limits tongue mobility, babies may have difficulties creating a negative pressure for sucking milk from the breast effectively, which could lead to poor weight gain for the babies and breastfeeding pain for the mommy. Babies might be hungry easily and cry more often, which could lead to parental worries and stress. ... Seek out for help if you have difficulties with breastfeeding! 03.01.2022 Children are born with the capacity to learn more than one language. toddlers gradually tune into the speech sounds of the language(s) they are exposed to in the first year of life. children are ready to learn more than one languages as long as they are exposed to and have sufficient opportunities to practice them. For example, if mom speaks one language and dad the other. 03.01.2022 The language development trajectories in monolingual and bilinguals are similar, therefore the signs of a language delay in bilingual children are similar to bilinguals, except that they struggle in BOTH languages. Here are some of the signs: - difficulty understanding words and sentences in BOTH languages - difficulty explaining or elaborating ideas in BOTH languages, - unclear speech sounds in BOTH languages As the language learning and processing systems work similarly in... BOTH languages, the presence of a language difficulty would present in BOTH language. However, the proficiency of competence in using each language differs based on the frequency of exposure and opportunities to use the different languages for meaningful communications. For example, if a child has recently migrated to Australia, signs of delay in English could be apparent as she might have little exposure and opportunities to use English. A wait and see approach would be appropriate to monitor her development. If in 2 years time, this child is still showing signs of delay, and she is now beginning to show difficulties in expressing herself in her other language, then it is highly recommended that she is to be seen by a Speech Pathologist to validate the concerns on her language development. #languagedelay #bilinguals #languagedevelopment #signsandsymptoms #speechies #slp #speechlanguagepathology #speechtherapy #languagetherapy #bilingualacquisition #bilingualspeechies

03.01.2022 Myth: children with a language difficulty should learn only one language. Fact: children are equipped to learn more than one languages no matter if they have a language difficulty. 02.01.2022 The short answer is - No! At a young age, children are sensitive to changes in the way different people speak. For instance, children can tune in to the two languages each parent speaks to him/her.
