25.01.2022 This week is huge in the world of womens health Physiotherapy. Not only is it Womens health week, its also Birth Trauma Awareness week. 1 in 3 Australian women describe their birth as traumatic.... 1 in 3. There are approximately 300,000 births in Australia every year. So that means 100,000 women are traumatised by their birth experience every year. Let that figure sink in. One of the biggest causes of trauma in birth is not being respected, cared for or heard during the birth experience. This is where continuity of care in birth is essential. Having the same trusted midwife caring for you throughout your pregnancy and birth can make a huge difference to your birth experience. Trusting your care provider is essential. If you dont like the first person you see, if you dont feel heard, go elsewhere. Find someone you can trust. Someone who makes you feel heard. Invest in your birth. Take antenatal classes. Have a Physiotherapy assessment to check your pelvic floor and find out what you can do to maximise your chances of the birth experience you want. Feeling safe, empowered and cared for are VITAL elements in a positive birth. And when women have had a positive birth experience they share that with other women and we reduce the fear around birth. Which makes more women feel empowered in their pregnancy and birth. If you have been traumatised by your birth experience, please, dont stop searching for support. Get in touch with @birthtrauma.org.au @pandanational @centre_for_perinatal_psych or @cope.org.au See your local womens health physio when you feel ready, we can support you to feel stronger and more empowered in your recovery. A positive birth is more than just a healthy baby. You deserve a positive, supported, respectful experience too. #birthtrauma #pregnancy #postnatal #toowoombaregion #toowoombabusiness #toowoombamumsandbubs #toowoombamums #birthsupport #positivebirth #selfcare #mumsmatter

25.01.2022 Happy Friday! How was your week? How are you spending your Friday night?

25.01.2022 Unpopular opinion: I didn't like the newborn phase. It rocked me. It broke me. I wasn't prepared for how harrowing it would be. As I looked around on social med...ia, I saw photos of smiling families, captions about newborn snuggles, the joy they never imagined possible. What I didn't hear about? That after I gave birth, I wouldn't get to recover. I ached, I bled for six weeks, I didn't sleep a solid night for months, my body hurt so bad for so long while taking care of a helpless little creature who needed me every single minute of the day. That my marriage would just about crumble under the stress of it all, that we'd resent each other, that we'd drift apart. We even took steps before baby arrived to make plans to try and prevent this - but it still happened. That my baby would cry nearly every moment he was awake, our lives would be ruled by reflux and nonstop vomiting, that I'd have so much anxiety about his sleep and eating that I wouldn't leave my house for months. That I would scroll my phone and feel jealous of strangers who apparently had babies that smelled like "new baby" and were "soaking in snuggles." Mine smelled like vomit and the only thing we were soaking in was bodily fluids. Photos of new families hiking, photos of people who "got their body back." Photos that just a few months ago I would have smiled at, I now viewed, and instantly cried - feeling like a complete failure. So, I'll say it: I didn't like the newborn phase. I was sad and angry and in pain for most of it - to the point that I barely remember any of it. When I look back at those 4 months, I have nothing but compassion for that version of me - the one who cried, was exhausted, and barely made it through. She is a warrior, she did her best with oh-so-little support. If you're struggling in the phase you're in, if you're seeing perfect photos on your feed, if you're feeling like a failure, hear this: you are not alone, you are not a bad mom, you are HUMAN. Those feeds aren't real. We all struggle. Even that blogger posting perfect photos of her perfect house and perfect life and perfect kids. To struggle is to be human. You are not alone. You are not alone. You are not alone.

25.01.2022 How amazing is this drawing! Our bodies are incredible, we don’t give them half the credit or appreciation they deserve. We certainly don’t allow them the rest and recovery they need after the amazing feat of growing and birthing another human. Have you thought about how you can nurture yourself after birth? What things can you do to honour your body and all it has accomplished?... Thanks @drdrewmoffrey for sharing this incredible image. #birth #pregnancy #womenshealth #pelvichealth #pelvichealthphysio #fourthtrimester

25.01.2022 Happy New Year lovely ladies! Welcome 2021! I hope your Holiday season was restorative, relaxing and filled with joyful moments. I turned my phone off for a few days to completely disconnect- and it was incredible! The joy of time and space away from technology gave me a sense of connection to my family and myself and a freedom I can only remember from the time before smart phones! I highly recommend doing it yourselves.... It also gave me time and space to reflect on the year that was, on how tough it was on so many levels, and in so many different ways for everyone. How, at times, all we could do was get through. Survive. Take one day at a time. Put plans on hold and wait. What things did you put on hold in 2020? Have you been meaning to come in for a pregnancy, postnatal or pelvic health checkup? Is 2021 the year you are going to stop putting up with your symptoms and seek support? Perhaps it’s the year you are are going to put your health and wellbeing at the top of your list. Prioritise self care. Fill your cup. At Flourish, my top priority is to listen, to understand, to support and nurture you on your individual journey. If you are ready to take the step towards better pelvic (and holistic) health, then now is the time to call, message or head online to book an appointment. I look forward to hearing from you and supporting you on your journey in 2021! #toowoombamums #toowoombafamilies #toowoombamumsandbubs #womensheath #pregnancy #postnatalhealth #postnatal #selfcare #wellbeing #flourish

24.01.2022 Im so excited to share this podcast with you in time for Womens Heath Week. Grab a cuppa and come and listen to me and my gorgeous cousin and postpartum doula, Steph, talk all about the postpartum pelvic floor. Posted @withregram @postpartum_with_steph Here are some stats that might shock you... -1 in 3 women will experience incontinence after giving birth -1 in 2 women live with prolapse -90% of women will experience s3xual dysfunction in the 12 months after giving birth -30% of women are doing pelvic floor exercises incorrectly If youre like me you would have received a pamphlet from the hospital with the 1 in 3 stat about incontinence, but no other practical, ongoing support. So Im excited to bring you this podcast episode today during Womens Health Week with Pelvic Floor Physio Kelly Pendlebury from @flourish_physiotherapy where we chat about all things core and floor. Kelly shares her wisdom and insights about womens health post-birth and offers advice for anyone who falls into any or all of the above groups. I learned a lot from this interview and I would strongly encourage anyone suffering to contact a pelvic health physio for support. Unfortunately this is another area of postpartum where birthing people can be left behind but hopefully with more awareness (and Medicare funding!) we can help make some changes. 22.01.2022 I could use this reminder, Im sure Im not alone! Posted @withregram @peacefulmindpeacefullife Stress is caused not by whats happening in the outer world, but by what our mind is thinking about whats happening.... Pause and take that in. Of course life is difficult, stressful, painful, and chaotic, this is true, but we can manage and choose how we respond by slowing down, taking in a few deep breaths, allowing the mind to calm down, and deciding what action we want to take in response to whats happening for us. If we can learn to slow down, stay in the present moment, instead of listening to the thoughts in the mind regretting the past or worrying about the future, then we can take our time and respond in a way that serves our lives and preserves our sanity.

21.01.2022 Supporting mothers means supporting families, which in turn supports communities and the entire human race. A nurtured mother means a nurtured family, and a nurtured world. It’s a major premise behind the work that I do. Nurturing mothers for holistic wellbeing so they can nurture their families. The whole world benefits from nurtured mothers!... If you are ready to start your journey, call or message to book an appointment or ask any questions you may have about the process. Credit: @drsophiebrock

21.01.2022 Posted @withregram @physioaustralia There are numerous potential health benefits for women who exercise during and after pregnancy. After all, childbirth is often compared to a marathon and therefore, preparation should be considered. To coincide with #WomensHealthWeek, Vice-chair of Queensland chapter of the Womens, Mens and Pelvic Health group Brooke Dobo, APAM, and Mens and Pelvic Health Physiotherapist Tory Toogood, MACP, contribute five evidence based practice points about the benefits of exercise during and after pregnancy. 16.01.2022 Welcome to Womens Health Week. Today, I want to talk about exercise.. Current guidelines recommend a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise a week for pregnant and non-pregnant women.... Thats 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week. If you are doing high intensity exercise, then its a minimum of 75 minutes a week. There are SO many benefits of exercise: - healthy heart and lungs - maintains bone density - improves mood - decreased stress, anxiety and depression - weight control - improves sleep - improves brain and memory function - decreases chronic pain The most important thing with exercise is that its something you enjoy! If you enjoy bushwalking, then go for a hike in nature. If you love getting in the water, go for a swim. If you love to run, then run! Variety also helps. Doing the same thing day in, day out can decrease motivation and become boring over time. So mix it up and try something new from time to time. If you have just had a baby, then getting back into exercise is individual. It depends on what your pre-pregnancy fitness was like, as well as what you were doing in pregnancy, your birth experience, you current level of sleep and rest and much more. There is some emerging evidence that early return to general exercise postnatally is NOT detrimental to the pelvic floor, but always seek advice from your pelvic health physio before returning to anything more than walking after having a baby. A thorough pelvic health assessment will ensure your return to exercise is safe for YOUR body. Feel free to post any questions you have in the comments or call or message to book an appointment. #womenshealthweek2020 #pelvichealth #pelvichealthphysio #toowoombabusiness #toowoombamums #toowoombamumsandbubs #exercise #postnatalfitness #pregnancy

14.01.2022 Pelvic floor devices... Lots of women ask me about this in clinic and this article gives a good overview of the types of devices available to women to enhance their pelvic floor muscles training. Not all devices are for everyone. It’s important that you know how to contract and relax your pelvic floor properly before considering a device, and a pelvic health physio can help you decide which device, if any, is right for you. ... If you would like to know which device might be right for you, call or message to book an appointment. There is limited availability in 2020. https://www.abc.net.au//how-do-pelvic-floor-devic/12785596

14.01.2022 Looking for a last minute Mother’s Day gift idea? These heat packs from @wiliheatbags are one of my favourite products. Australian made with lupines which have less odour but hold heat longer, they can also be popped in the freezer and used as a cold pack.... Absolutely gorgeous patterns in an adjustable, wearable heat pack that wraps around your back to deliver the relief of heat exactly where you need it. Perfect for pregnant women experiencing low back and pelvic girdle pain mothers of young children with sore mid and low backs from carrying, nursing, settling and lifting women with chronic pelvic pain conditions like endo, you can wear this around your belly instead of around your back anyone wanting a gorgeous heat pack! They also come in a neck wrap, for women with sore shoulders and necks. (And I currently have a few eye masks still in stock!). The thing I love most about these is that of life won’t let you sit down with a heat pack, these heat packs can be worn, so you can keep looking after children while delivering much needed relief. They are also absolutely divine looking. Give me a call or send a message if you would like to purchase one in time for Mother’s Day this Sunday. #toowoombamumsandbubs #toowoombamums #toowoombawomen #endometriosis #pelvicpain #lowbackpain #pregnancy #pregnancypainrelief #heatpacks #mothersdaygift #mothersday

14.01.2022 Thanks Alex Stalling for bringing this topic up... I have absolutely noticed this within the Flourish community as well as my own circle, and myself. It’s been a pretty full on year for all of us. We’ve had to adapt to so much change and not had the same supports we normally would.... And then most of us are also trying to mum, or learn to mum in amongst it all. The end of the year is nearly here, there’s always a little burn out at this time, but it’s definitely bigger this year. Be kind to yourself. And others. Make a plan for some down time. Plan some time for you. Be present. Focus on the now. Do some journalling. Reach out if you need help.

14.01.2022 Such a great post from @melbourne_healthy_pregnancy This is absolutely something we cover in pelvic health Physiotherapy sessions at Flourish. There are so many reasons for decreased libido post birth. Being open with your partner and yourself is vital, and knowing its so common, with up to 90% of postnatal women reporting some form of sexual dysfunction the first year. Posted @withregram @melbourne_healthy_pregnancy It is common to have low libido after having a baby.... In an initial consultation we (pelvic floor physios) even ask new mums if they have returned to sex. This is gently opening the invitation to talk about this is you have any concerns. A sex therapist told me that humans are driven by the need for physical touch and when youve got a baby you are getting that quota and more, you dont crave touch and you dont need more. @thehappyvproject shares pieces of low libido advice here (Follow Sofias page for education): 1. Talk to your partner about how you are feeling. 2. Think about the last time you had great sex. What was going on? How can you recreate that? 3. Schedule naked sexy fun times where the focus is not intercourses. 4. Get to know your libido. 5. Know that Responsive desire is a thing.. most libidos are not spontaneous. A sex therapist or sexologist (see some helpful tags) can you make sense of your feelings as a changed person. Theyll focus on you and how you feel about yourself, rather than just focusing on sex. #postnatal #postpartum #pregnancy #mumlife #returntosex #sexafterbabies #sexafterbirth #pelvicfloor #pelvicfloorrecovery #panda #newbaby #newmum #sexeducation #parenting #postpartumbody #newdad #newparents #newparentslife #postpartumjourney #postpregnancybody #emotionalhealth #connection #selflove.

13.01.2022 Some days we run out of patience. Some days we just havent had enough sleep. Some days are hard.... It doesnt make you bad, it makes you human. 13.01.2022 Welcome to Flourish Physiotherapy. Im Kelly, A physiotherapist with almost 10 years experience in continence and pelvic health. 12.01.2022 Spring is here! This morning I really noticed how much lighter it is getting in the mornings. The last few days have felt much warmer, and trees are starting to get their leaves back! ... I love this time of year. The end of cold days, the beginning of brighter, warmer, (less windy) days. Many of you will have more motivation now to start getting back into exercise. If youve recently had a baby and youre not sure where to start, or youre feeling weak through your pelvic floor and core, then please, get in touch with your local pelvic health physio and have an assessment. Too often, we think we can simply bounce back after a baby. But our pelvic floors and abdominal muscles have gone through significant stretching - the pelvic floor muscles can stretch up to 2.5x their normal length during delivery. Not to mention the impact of a C section on the abdominal wall.... It takes time to recover. And investing in support to do it right for YOUR body will be a worthy investment in yourself and your long term wellbeing. Call or message to make an appointment.

My big two are on holidays with my mum and my youngest is in daycare today.... The to do list is whispering my name (quite loudly), but at least for now, I will choose to ignore it. 07.01.2022 Today is the fifth and final day of Womens Health Week. I hope this week has inspired you to take some small (or big) action for your own health and wellbeing. Today I want to focus on self care.... Self care isnt all long bubble baths and weekend retreats alone (though it can absolutely include that if that fits your budget, lifestyle and desires!). Self care is the daily things we do and prioritise that say I matter. Its taking five minutes sit (maybe with a warm cuppa) and focus on your breath and the present moment, rather than your to do list. Its prioritising getting to the doctor about that strange new lump on your skin. Or booking that appointment with a mental health care professional to talk about your worries. Its prioritising your pregnancy and postnatal health, care and support the same way you prioritised your wedding day. Its setting and enforcing boundaries about what you can and cant do. What you will and wont accept. Its choosing to listen to our intuition, to be in our bodies. To love our bodies as our vehicle in this life, for their amazing strength, capacity and ability. Its choosing, every day, to be kind to yourself, instead of listening to that cruel, inner voice that makes you doubt yourself, feel guilty, not prioritise you. Its choosing to love and accept yourself in all your humanness, for all your faults, for how far you have come, for your innate goodness, so that others can choose to love themselves too. Swipe right for a brief exercise from @Chopra to check in with yourself. Self care doesnt have to be expensive or time consuming. It can be the small things we do every day that reinforce to ourselves and others, that we matter. #womenshealthweek2020 #pelvichealth #pelvichealthphysio #toowoombamumsandbubs #toowoombamumsandbubs #selfcare #selflove #pregnancy #postnatal

02.01.2022 Welcome to day 2 of Womens Health Week! Today is all about pelvic floor exercise! No doubt by now you have heard of pelvic floor exercises...... But did you know that at least 30% of you are doing them incorrectly? In my clinical experience, I would say its closer to 50% of women are doing pelvic floor exercises incorrectly. And if you arent doing it right, not only is it a waste of time, you could actually be doing yourself harm. Some of the ways we get it wrong include: - bearing down instead of lifting up - squeezing everything but the pelvic floor - breath holding - not relaxing properly - tilting the pelvis instead of contracting - doing too much or not enough for YOUR pelvic floor A pelvic floor contraction should feel like a squeeze and lift of the muscles around your vagina and anus. Like stopping the flow of wee or holding wind in. Like an elevator where the doors close and the lift goes up. The muscles in your lower tummy should also gently tighten. After a contraction, your pelvic floor muscles should relax fully. The contraction and the letting go are equally important. If you struggle to let go, then this should be your focus. NOT strengthening. Your strengthening program should be tailored to your body- bringing you to fatigue to ensure the muscles get stronger. This is important stuff. Its the lifelong prevention and management of incontinence, prolapse, sexual dysfunction and pain. Important for your quality of life. If you are unsure, I urge you to contact your local pelvic health physio and have a thorough assessment so you are getting it right. Call or message for more information or to book an appointment. #womenshealthweek2020 #pelvicfloorexercises #pelvichealth #pelvichealthphysio #pelvichealthmatters #toowoombamums #toowoombamumsandbubs #toowoombabusiness #selfcare

01.01.2022 Womens Health Week Day 4. Today is all about essential health checks. Taking time out to have health checks is essential. Most of us live busy, hectic lives and sometimes we can forget the essential health checks we need.... These include: - a Pap smear every 2-5 years depending on the test you have had. If you have had an abnormal Pap smear in the past, you will need them more regularly. - monthly self breast examination. Try to time it at the same time in your cycle as there can be cyclical changes in your breast tissue. Ensure you examine every part of your breast and up into your armpit as well - eye checks every two years - dental check annually. Poor dental health and gum inflammation has been linked to preterm labour. - 6 week postnatal midwife/doctor check AND Physiotherapy check. These checks look at different things and both are essential to your postnatal recovery. - at the turn of every decade make an appointment with your GP. Your family or personal history may mean you need other tests. If you have an new and unusual symptoms , see you doctor straight away. Things like unexplained vaginal bleeding, change in bowel habit, unexplained weight loss and abdominal pain can be signs of more serious issues and shouldnt be ignored. Your health is your most valuable asset. Be sure to make it a top priority. #womenshealthweek2020 #pelvichealthphysiotherapy #selfcare #postnatal #toowoombamumsandbubs #toowoombamums

01.01.2022 This is so incredibly relevant for mothers! Rest is not wasting time. It is vital for our wellbeing.

01.01.2022 Your 6 week check with your doctor or midwife is very different to your postnatal physio check. One doesnt negate the need for the other. BOTH are essential to your recovery and return to your new normal life.... This womens health week, make your postnatal recovery a priority and book an appointment with your local pelvic health physiotherapist. Call or message to book. #womenshealthweek2020 #pelvichealthphysio #postnatal #postnatalphysio #toowoombamums #toowoombamumsandbubs #selfcare
