22.01.2022 Cooking up a storm Darren asked his support worker, Karen if she could help him make some scones. This is one of his most loved treats. They looked up the recipe, went to the shops to get the ingredients and returned to Darrens house to cook. Then Karen wrote up the recipe and method and they added the recipe to Darrens recipe book. We are proud of Darren for his willingness to learn and being more confident in the kitchen. Thanks to Karen and our Central Coast team for supporting Darren to learn a skill so he can continue to enjoy his cooking his favourites.

22.01.2022 Fun in the Sun Just before the wild weather hit on Friday a group of ConnectAbility customers took time out to enjoy the sunshine and activity park at Speers Point. A great day out.

22.01.2022 Doing what is important to you Andrew is a young man who has a keen interest in ducks. He was able to identify different species when he and his mum went to look at the ducks at the Easter Show one year. One of his favourite activities is to feed the ducks at the local waterfront. Andrews mum gave his support worker directions, but Andrew led the way without any prompts and from his smiles and excitement, everyone knew he really enjoyed the activity so his support team make sure they plan for a local walk to feed the ducks whenever possible.

18.01.2022 Jesmond - Graffiti ARTExpress - Youth Week project Jesmond Neighbourhood Centre in partnership with Newcastle City Council ran an on line project - Graffiti ArtExpress. With the start of the Covid-19 restrictions were put in place at the end of March 2020, meaning we were unable to hold our Graffiti ArtExpress on site so we ran it on-line via Facebook and Whats App. Participants were aged between 12-24 years. As the sessions were conducted on line and not face to face th...e participants joined in in designing a Graffiti Art Work that represented the many cultures that attend our centre for various programs. The finished product will become a permanent part of the centre with participants able to view and share their work with others. This event gave participants an opportunity to share their ideas and have their voices heard on matters important to them while having fun taking part in an event that was opened to all members of the local community. Take a look at the work below. https://youtu.be/y33O_DhKfpY

17.01.2022 Newcastle City Council - making it safer for us all. Thanks to Newcastle City Council it is going to be much safer for ConnectAbility customers and the general public as a new path is currently being completed out the front of ConnectAbility and neighbouring businesses. It is hard going pushing wheelchairs on uneven ground or if you have mobility issues so we are very excited to see the concrete going down and a path emerging.

14.01.2022 Stuart In HIS own words A long term resident in Supported Independent Living with ConnectAbility and also attending activities through the day (twice weekly) Stuart felt he needed to share insights on how he views ConnectAbility. Stuart has recently sat on interview panels for new staff and showed surprising insight into what made a great worker from his perspective very helpful indeed for ConnectAblity who want to have staff that are customer focused and put customer cho...ice and control at the top of their mindsets. The Brenda that Stuart refers to (frequently) in the video is Brenda, our Senior Leader for our Supported Independent Living. Brenda has built a great relationship with Stuart over the years and he knows he can come and see her whenever he wishes as do many of our customers. We provide an open door policy for all customers so that any issues, feedback or stories can be shared. Thanks to Stuart for his input and continued support.

08.01.2022 RU OK Day Today was RU OK Day. Staff were asked to wear yellow in support of the day and took time out to have a coffee and chat. Kathy, from our scheduling team pulled this little number out of her wardrobe to wear in (No we dont know why it was in her wardrobe) It did provide everyone with a laugh. It will be a great idea for people to continue to check in with family, friends and work mates. COVID has given people extra stresses and you never know the pressures some people may be feeling. Just a smile and a chat can make people feel like someone is there for them. You can also encourage people to contact their health professional or one of the specialist services such as Lifeline or Beyond Blue. Lets help promote wellbeing for those we care about and continue to ask RU OK? and listen.

08.01.2022 In light of yesterdays latest COVID-19 update, Hunter New England Health has provided further detail regarding the latest known COVID-19 case in the Hunter Region. Anyone who visited the following places must remain alert for symptoms of COVID-19 and seek testing should any occur. The Salamander Bay Shopping Centre at any stage on 15 July Windsor Castle Hotel in East Maitland during the evening of 13 July,... Salamander Bay Village Woolworths on 17 July between 2.30pm to closing time, 18 July between 4pm to closing time, 19 July between 12.45pm to closing time, and 20 July between 3pm to closing time. The Fingal Bay Caf and Takeaway (4 Market Street) 17 July between 11.30am 12 midday. Remember, you do not have to have all symptoms of COVID-19 to be tested. Be on the look-out for fever, sore throat, cough or shortness of breath, and even milder symptoms such as fatigue, new muscle aches/pains, a change in taste/smell or a new runny nose. Anyone in the general Port Stephens area with symptoms of COVID-19 should also seek testing. A full-list of COVID-19 testing clinics is available here: https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectio//Pages/clinics.aspx It is essential people follow directions they receive about home isolation and quarantine and maintain COVID-safe practices of physical distancing of 1.5 metres, cough or sneeze into their elbow, and regularly wash their hands. You may be aware that 2 schools and a Childcare Centre in the Port Stephens area were closed today for cleaning following 3 positive COVID-19 cases. People in close contact with members of these schools are not currently being required to self-isolate, however are being reminded to self-isolate and be tested if symptoms arise. In relation to COVID-19 Clusters in Sydney the advice from Hunter New England Health is not to visit Sydney if you dont need to. Due to the lockdown in Victoria, ConnectAbility have had to re-assess some of its COVID19 practices. If anyone resides with a person that has been told to self-isolate, particularly those returning from overseas or Victoria, they will be required to self-isolate for 14 days. Please communicate quickly with your team leader or People and Culture if any of the above situations might apply to you, so that we can continue to keep our customers and staff safe from contracting COVID-19. Stay safe and stay well!
