25.01.2022 Thanks to PTCBR Public Transport Association of Canberra, Pedal Power ACT: Canberra Region Cycling, Living Streets Canberra and AEVA Australian Electric Vehicle Association for co-hosting our public forum which provoked this discussion about public transport policies. 24.01.2022 On the back of releasing the ACT Governments Zero Emission Transition Plan For Transport Canberra, the ALP have committed to electrifying the ACTs public transport system, with 90 new electric buses in the next 4 years, a new zero-emissions bus depot in Canberras North and electric bus infrastructure at the new Woden Depot. Lets hope we arent buying any more diesel buses from here on! 24.01.2022 As well as being iconic and cute, koalas and other wildlife are vital elements in ecosystems. Its great to see them recovering from bushfire, and more research about their habits. #ProtectNature https://www.abc.net.au//rescued-koalas-returned-t/12632592

22.01.2022 The ACT Greens have announced a $20m plan to transition Canberra homes off gas, and a commitment to stop connecting fossil-fuel gas to new infill developments from 2023. This is a great response to our calls for all new residential infill connections to be stopped immediately, although it would be even better to at least stop all new houses that don't already have a DA from putting gas in well before 2023. You can read more about this announcement here: https://greens.org.au/act/get-off-gas

21.01.2022 It's not quite so simple as grow up or grow out. We are a low density city in a low density country, and we can afford to fill in some gaps, and offer high quality medium density housing, as long as we use good design an plan high quality shared green space fo residents with great transport connections. But there is no doubt that "growing out" means concreting over grasslands and woodlands that should be protected. #ACElection

20.01.2022 "Right now, the scale of the climate crisis means that every single action, policy and commitment made by governments, companies and communities needs to be pulling us in a direction of climate action." With Canberra's per person emissions rate one of the highest in the world, there is a strong case for the ACT to take action. Come to our election forum tonight to ask what the candidates plan to do about creating a sustainable future for our city and region. https://conservationcouncil.org.au/election-forum-climate/ #ACTElection2020 #ClimateActionNow #ClimateEmergency

20.01.2022 Strong environmental law is needed to protect of our iconic species into the future. Yet we are already seeing a lack of commitment by the Commonwealth to assume responsibility for our environment, rushing to devolve powers to the states before the final EPBC report is released.

14.01.2022 Great initiative by @PlanetArk and @auspost to help us tackle the boxes of old electronics junk that we all have tucked in a cupboard. Much better to recycle these valuable materials than dump them in landfill or leave them gathering dust! #CircularEconomy

14.01.2022 Some good news for the koalas at Mt Lofty! Lets hope the NCA can be as decisive about the grasslands at North Lawson that DHA is proposing to build over when the time comes. #biodiversitymatters #northlawson

14.01.2022 My Octopus Teacher is a new nature documentary which follows filmmaker Craig Foster as he forges a relationship with a wild common octopus in a South African kelp forest. Could the emotive approach to storytelling used in the film be positive for wildlife conservation? Some evidence suggests that empathy can drive concern for wildlife as well as positive action. http://ow.ly/TMJS50Cugnw?

14.01.2022 We agree an effective way to help families with energy costs is to help them get off gas and onto efficient electric appliances. The question for all candidates at the ACT Election is: Will you stop new residences across established suburbs hooking up to the gas network? (Saving $35m of gas consumers money over the next 5 years). https://conservationcouncil.org.au/safe-climate-2020/ #NoNewGas #GasFreeACT #MakeTheSwitch

10.01.2022 "Fast-tracking" a transition off gas is not about shaming people who currently use gas. It's about giving the community the time and the support to make the right decisions going forward, such as buying an electric appliance when your old gas one breaks down. But allowing new houses and buildings to hook up to the gas network is not responsible when we know that gas is a fossil fuel that is being phased out. Our Make the Switch website (maketheswitch.org.au) shows Canberrans how they can save money and the environment by switching to all-electric appliances when their gas ones kick the bucket. #maketheswitch #NoNewGas

08.01.2022 Today ACT Labor committed $100m over 5 years to build 250MW of battery storage in a distributed network around the city. Battery storage will add great flexibility to our electricity network, and will help Canberra's energy resilience. #ACTElection2020

07.01.2022 The ACT has the potential to become a national leader in waste management strategy by focusing more on a circular economy. But, as ACT Commissioner for Sustainability and the Environment, Dr Sophie Lewis, points out, we also need to rethink the way we consume.

06.01.2022 It turned out that light rail was a bit of a hot topic at our Sustainable Transport Forum last night. It would be good to have a clear commitment from all political parties to continue the rollout of light rail across Canberra. #zeroemissions #sustainabletransport #ACTElection2020

06.01.2022 Cats are wonderful household pets, but roaming cats pose large threats to our native wildlife. This new research appears to have found one species that has adapted to avoid encounters with roaming cats.

06.01.2022 Welcome to our new volunteers Last week we welcomed new volunteers who will be taking on a range of projects in communications, campaigns and fundraising. If you'd like to get involved, we'd love to hear from you! Email us at [email protected] to discuss volunteer opportunities!

06.01.2022 The Office of the Commissioner for Sustainability and the Environment (OCSE) are conducting a survey on how the 2019/20 bushfires affected the health of ACT residents. If you have a spare 5 minutes, grab a coffee and take the survey here: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/blacksummer

05.01.2022 Do you want to be involved in a PAID co-design workshop to help reduce the amount of leaf litter entering ACT waterways? Recent research suggests that leaf litter entering stormwater drains across Canberra is contributing significantly to nutrient pollution in our waterways, causing blue-green algae outbreaks, among other problems. Griffith University is looking for ACT residents to participate in a 90-minute online Zoom session to discuss ideas for initiatives that could be... implemented in the ACT to keep waterways clean. Fill out this short survey to register: https://prodsurvey.rcs.griffith.edu.au//s/653117/newtest/Y

05.01.2022 A future expansion of the northside suburb of Lawson, "Lawson 2", is in doubt as the government has not been able to sell the land that allows for almost 1000 properties. Nearby "Lawson 1", however, remains a hot topic of debate. The proposed development on this grassland site threatens species such as the Golden Sun Moth, Striped Legless Lizard, Perunga Grasshopper and Key’s Matchstick Grasshopper https://www.canberratimes.com.au//expansion-of-lawson-ver/

05.01.2022 This is a missed opportunity. Any public funding should be used to support the transition to low-emissions transport, including electric vehicles, and provide targeted support to those who might need assistance to get there. #SustainableTransport #ActiveTravel https://canberraliberals.org.au/liberals-to-deliver-direct/

04.01.2022 Here's a great story about getting off gas in Canberra! And shout out to Dr Emma Campbell at ACTCOSS - ACT Council of Social Service Inc. who is so supportive of cutting greenhouse emissions, and stands up for those low income households who might need to be supported through the transition. If you need more info about going all-electric in Canberra, check out www.maketheswitch.org.au #gasfreeACT #nonewgas #ACTElection

04.01.2022 Renewable energy takes another step towards a sustainable future with the ACT Governments new contracts to build 2 commercial-scale batteries in the ACT. Together with investment in rooftop solar and EVs, this will be good for grid flexibility and helps to displace coal-powered generation from the network. https://www.canberratimes.com.au//two-big-batteries-comin/

04.01.2022 This is a devastating outcome. Gas is a polluting fossil fuel, and not needed as a "transition fuel." We should all be fighting to get emissions down, not opening up new coal and gas fields. When are Governments going to stand for the community instead of big corporations? When are our national environment laws going to take climate change into account? #nonewgas #RErecovery #gasfreeACT

04.01.2022 What are the parties promising about climate action, getting off gas and ending support for fossil fuels? Join our final election forum tonight to find out and ask your questions. https://conservationcouncil.org.au/election-forum-climate/ #ACTElection2020 #ClimateActionNow #NoNewGas

03.01.2022 Canberra Liberals have announced they will make the ACTs entire cycle path network road-free by 2030 and provide $5 million to improve cycling facilities at transport interchanges and other major stops. #ACTElection2020 #ActiveTravel #BikePaths You can find the details of their announcement here: ... https://canberraliberals.org.au/cycling-will-be-road-free-/ See more
