22.01.2022 Virtual Bird Night #2. If you want to learn a little more about the breeds that were imported to Australia by Avgen then join us on Sunday 11 October at 7:30 p...m Melbourne time when Luke Price will give us a few tips as to how to tell our Friesians from our Fayoumis. Avgen made several importations of breeds that were new to Australia or complemented our existing populations. Some of these are now commonly seen at shows (such as Dutch Bantams) others less so (such as the Friesian Fowl). We will use Zoom as the format again so you will need to register to get a meeting link. The best way is to email me at [email protected] See more

22.01.2022 Babies Babies Everywhere! We hatched 6 extra Vorwerk chicks for a fellow local poultry club member

21.01.2022 Free educational podcasts offered by the American Poultry Association for personal and education use. Breeds include Leghorns, Wyandottes, Phoenix, Minorcas, Marans, Rhode Island Reds. It is really great to see a signfiicant poultry organisation that prioritises free access educational materials in order to promote breed standards. It looks like a lot more material is going to be added to the web site in due course.

21.01.2022 Sharing rare breeds is often difficult and people do try the challenge of providing eggs. Step one is knowing if the eggs being laid by the flock are fertile be...fore you start collecting. Checking whether an egg has been fertilised can only be done by opening it up and looking or incubating it to see if it develops. Once an egg is fertilised, cell division begins inside the hen before the egg is even laid so we can see a difference in the germinal disc even from the moment it is laid. These eggs were both laid yesterday. There are rare things that can happen even with infertile eggs but for general hatching purposes the image is good enough. See more

I would need between 6-10 in total. Open to all quiet Softfeather breeds but would prefer something cute and fluffy. (Pekins or similar) I would prefer purebred birds. 05.01.2022 I dont often show much of our cheeky Jap Quails, just because we have so many other cool rare breeds but here is a sneak leak of them with all their hidey holes in their enclosure. Like the chooks they love dust bathing but they also dont necessarily lay in nest boxes and just leave eggs everywhere lol. We have eggs for $15 a dozen (min 2 dzn if posted) plus $30 express post in an eggspress safe carton. Great for small areas and yummy little eggs in salad

01.01.2022 Yes Vaccinate for Mareks disease See the Videos with this post of two feather babies getting their Marekss vaccination Mareks disease is caused by he...rpes virus. Mareks disease is a highly infectious, and often fatal in un-vaccinated or susceptible birds. The viral disease takes about one month for clinical symptoms to be seen. Infection is most common in young birds usually less than 6 months, but we do see it in older birds. Typical Clinical signs include leg paralysis often one leg forward stance or other neurological manifestations, like blindness and delayed crop emptying. The clinical signs are associated with the development of a T cell lymphoma, or a blood cell cancer. There is infiltration of lymphocytes, a type of blood cell into the nerves and especially the sciatic nerve hence the leg paralysis syndrome seen. INCREDIBLE ! Diagnosis in the living animal a PCR test of bloodand/ or blood feather at time of writing the test cost is $125. Vaccines used to control infection in poultry are available for backyard poultry. Cost now is $250 dollars for 1000 doses. That is the only quantity available and it needs to be pre-ordered and stored in dry ice until thawing. The cost includes the veterinarian vaccinating up to eight birds. After Covid-19 restriction we will have chicken Vet days and offer vaccinations and treatments chicken training with the cost being a donation to the Chicken rescue charity of your choice.
