19.01.2022 Why is this day special to Australians? At 11 am on 11 November 1918 the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare. The allied armies had driven the German invaders back, having inflicted heavy defeats upon them over the preceding four months. In November the Germans called for an armistice (suspension of fighting) in order to secure a peace settlement. They accepted allied terms that amounted to unconditional surrender. The 11th h...our of the 11th day of the 11th month attained a special significance in the post-war years. The moment when hostilities ceased on the Western Front became universally associated with the remembrance of those who had died in the war. This first modern world conflict had brought about the mobilisation of over 70 million people and left between 9 and 13 million dead, perhaps as many as one-third of them with no known grave. The allied nations chose this day and time for the commemoration of their war dead. Read more at https://www.awm.gov.au/commemoration/remembrance-day

03.01.2022 ATTENTION MUMS AND DADS. The major project for 2020/2021 for the Endeavour Lions Club is the upgrading of the facilities at Keable Park, Racecourse Road, Cooktown. The germ of the plan is to remove the existing playground equipment, which is past its use-by date. What do we replace it with? Well, obviously playground equipment which can be used by the children. To this end we would like parents who are interested to contribute their ideas of what they would like to see i...nstalled. We will take all these ideas on board and with the assistance of Cook Shire Council staff cost same and, of course, check the practicalities. Then, subject to funding being available, hopefully we can upgrade and beautify the area. Our member, Sarah, is the driving force behind this project and any ideas can be forwarded to her at [email protected] Originally we were looking at shading the playground at the Lions Park in Charlotte Street. Council, we believe, has received a grant to fully replace and shade this area and they are currently in the planning stage. Very good news. See more
