08.01.2022 Firie Friday, meet your local CVFRS volunteers. This week we asked Steven Casey-Forward some questions, The CVFRS Lieutenant. How long have you been in CVFRS: I... joined the Coolgardie VFRS in august if 2013. What is your postion at CVFRS: I currently hold the rank of Lieutenant but in the past have been an Active Fire Fighter and Apparatus Officer. How long have your been a Lieutenant ?: 4 years now Do you hold any other positions with any other organisation in regards to fire fighting?: Yes, I have been a Fire Control Officer for the Shire of Coolgardie for 4 years and currently hold down the rank of Deputy Chief Bush Fire Control Officer for the past 2 bushfire seasons. What are your favourite parts of our weekly trainings: Being able to demonstrate and pass on my knowledge and skillsets that I have learnt over the past 7 years to the current crew that have been passed onto myself from my fellow volunteer fire fighters and career DFES staff. I do have to say my most favourite part of the weekly trainings has got to be the gatherings in the club rooms after training or incidents where we all get a chance to discuss and chat about fire Brigade and general life over a cold beer or two. What is your favourite part about being a volunteer fire fighter?: Being a volunteer fire fighter is all about being a team player, having a laugh, joke and just getting along with your other brigade mates, we all have something in common and that is enjoying each other’s company and having the same sort of interests. I think deep down it’s all about being able to help those that need a helping hand when they are in trouble. It’s also the bond and friendships you gain along the journey which some of the current crew we will always have that strong connection. Do you have any words for anyone who is thinking about joining a VFRS: Just come on down to the Fire Station on a Tuesday night and come checkout what we get up to, we could be doing services on fire hydrants, cutting up cars, doing BA Drills or rolling out hoses. It’s all about giving back to our community and helping out where and when we can and having a fun time doing it, there is also a social side that we all quite enjoy too after trainings and on weekends sitting by the BBQ and sipping on a cold beer or two.
