22.01.2022 Sad endings, new beginnings It is with sadness that the nursery says farewell to Fuschia Collard who recently resigned as manager. For the last five memorable years managing the nursery, she has brought her own style of friendly professionalism and passionate expertise in native plants of the Sunshine Coast. Her knowledge and love of the environment in all its beauty has been inspirational to volunteers and clients. Fuschia will be missed and the search is on for a person of her calibre to manage such a vibrant community nursery as ours. Meanwhile, all at the nursery wish her great new opportunities and rewards for her life ahead.

19.01.2022 What is an Indigenous 'scar tree' and why are they special? For hundreds of years, Indigenous Australians removed the bark from various gum trees in order to... build canoes, shields, shelters and a coolamons. This would expose the sapwood, leaving the trees to appear 'scarred' when recovering for the next generation's needs. Scar trees are physical links that connect Indigenous people to their country and culture. They also identify where Indigenous Australians lived and provide clues to other archaeological sites. The trees are now considered rare because of the effect of land clearing and bushfires, which have reduced the numbers of remaining scar trees. Today, remaining scar trees also provide safe breeding hollows for birds. Is there a specific tree that connects you to your childhood or past? by Robert Virtue #GardeningAustralia #naidocweek2020 See more

17.01.2022 Storm on the way- The enormous heat and pressure that lightning generates provides enough energy to break down and convert atmospheric nitrogen into a number of reactive nitrogen species. When mixed with oxygen and water in the atmosphere the resulting rainfall will contain greater levels of nitrates and ammonium. https://theconversation.com/ive-always-wondered-is-rain-bet

14.01.2022 Love your 'lillies'? Are they 'cloaked'? The range of perennial and bulbous Amaryllidaceae - commonly called lillies - you can grow in Queensland is truly amazi...ng: belladonna lily, crinum lily, hippeastrum lily, Lent lily, Natal lily, swamp lily, trumpet lily, and not forgetting amaryllis lilies. All of which are susceptible to devastating attack by amaryllis caterpillar (Spodoptera picta), the caterpillar of an Australian moth. Breeding all year round in Queensland's warm climate, hungry amaryllis caterpillar can eat the leaves, seeds and stems of its favourite food plants. Right now, during showery summer conditions, they can breed fast and spread far and wide. Wouldn't it be handy if they didn't find and eat your plants? Fortunately, by applying quick coat of natural, cold pressed, organic-approved neem oil, amaryllis moths will pass susceptible plants by. Why? Natural neem oil has been used for thousands of years as a deterrent. It changes they way plants smell and taste so when an egg laying amaryllis moth encounters a treated plant...it moves on. One application lasts three weeks. 09.01.2022 The Coastal Banksia can cause confusion when you visit a nursery. Large trees you see at the beach or that you might already have growing have a smooth edged leaf, however the juvenile plants have a toothed or serrated leaf edge to protect themselves from predators that might like to feed on the leafs. The leaves develop a smooth edge once they have grown a liitle over 1m tall.

08.01.2022 Water crystals soak up rain and hold it for when your plants need it. Helps to reduce time spent watering the garden. If placed below your plant in the ground still dry they can push the plant out of the ground. So remember to soak them for 30min in water to allow expansion. Available at our nursery.

07.01.2022 Scribbly Gums get their name from the ‘scribbles' on their bark which are tunnels made by the larvae of the Scribbly Gum Moth. Eucalyptus racemosa are currently shedding their bark which makes a little mess on the lawn of those lucky enough to have these magnificent trees on their properties, but it’s only for a couple of weeks once a year so don’t stress. And they provide much needed hollows & habitat for wildlife. https://australian.museum//anim/insects/scribbly-gum-moth/
