05.01.2022 The rare book, "A Brief Statement of Facts in Connection with an Overland Expedition from Lake George to Port Phillip in 1824" will be on display at Cooma Cottage from 20 April. The small book is Hamilton Humes account of his famous pioneering journey of discovery overland to Port Phillip with fellow explorer, William Hovell, in 1824. In 1853, Hovell visited Geelong where he was fted as its European discoverer. Reports of this reached Hume, who was so incensed that he wrote... this booklet to be his version of the events that took place on the journey and the part played by Hovell. *Spoiler alert* - the book is critical of Hovell and reduced his standing in the eyes of the public! It is 70 pages in total with a lithograph portrait of Hamilton Hume by Charles Turner (1774-1857). (This fascinating book was purchased with funds from the Southern Highlands Branch of the National Trust.)
