25.01.2022 From the underwater world to one that is firmly terrestrial, Theoné van der Merwe was forced to make a career detour when the pandemic hit. But it’s all worked out for the best. Theoné is one of many people to find a job through the Working for Victoria Agricultural Workforce Plan to date and, in the process, has learnt new skills that have helped set her up for future career opportunities. At the beginning of this year I was supposed to start an internship in marine biology..., but the pandemic put a pretty big dent in my plans. Instead, I’ve been given the opportunity to expand my skills. I’ve loved learning more about land conservation, especially agricultural land use. 19.01.2022 - The Striped Legless Lizard - Animal of the Grassy Eucalypt Woodlands The Striped Legless Lizard is a thin snake-like lizard that surprisingly, is related to geckos. They are non-poisonous and can grow up to an impressive 30cm in length. This legless lizard can be differentiated from snakes by the stripes along the entire length of the body, distinct ear openings, small hind limb flaps, broad fleshy tongues and extremely long tails. Striped Legless Lizards (Delma Impar)... are residents of native grasslands and grassy woodlands of the VVP. Still, they are rarely seen as they shelter in soil cracks, in crevices under rocks, in the base of grass tussocks, or under the artificial substrate. This lizard is mainly diurnal (active during the day) and can sometimes be seen sun-basking on tussocks, generally from late spring to early autumn, with peak activity in November and December. These long-lived lizards feed on invertebrates such as crickets, grasshoppers, spiders and centipedes. The females lay 2 elongated parchment-shelled eggs, that are deposited under rocks or in soil cavities in late spring or early summer; these hatch after 6-7 weeks. Habitat degradation and destruction, predation by native predators (snakes, other lizards and raptors) as well as introduced predators (foxes and cats) are the main threats to the survival of these lizards. We are excited to hear if you have seen Striped Legless Lizards in your patch of Grassy Eucalypt Woodlands! Our Victorian Volcanic Plain Grassy Eucalypt Woodlands Project will support private landholders to improve the condition, connectivity and extent of these critically endangered woodlands. The Geelong Field Naturalists Club is a valued partner for this project. This project is supported by Corangamite CMA, through funding from the Australian Governments National Landcare Program. 17.01.2022 - The Golden Sun Moth - *Habitat the Grassy Eucalypt Woodlands. The Golden Sun Moth is critically endangered and can be mistaken for a butterfly. Adult Golden Sun Moths (Synemon plana) are most active on sunny, relatively still, hot days during late spring to early summer when they have a flight period of only a few days during their breeding season. ... The female Golden Sun Moth lays eggs in the base of the host plant where the larva may spend two to three years underground feeding on the plant roots. After pupation, the adult Sun Moths emerge and live for one to four days. This is because they do not have functional mouthparts and so, are unable to feed. During the breeding season, adult females flash their brightly coloured hindwings to attract the males who patrol the native grasslands in search of a mate. It is usually the adult males you see flying over grasslands because females rarely fly and are thought to walk between tussocks during display and egg-laying. After mating, the females lay their eggs and die. Only a fraction of the native grasslands which existed prior to European settlement remains today. This beautiful Sun Moth is dependent on its native host plant, Wallaby Grass (Rytidosperma species), making protection of our native grasslands and grassy woodlands vital to its survival. We are excited to hear if you have seen Golden Sun Months in your patch of Grassy Eucalypt Woodland! 17.01.2022 The aim of this project initiative is to provide more opportunities to allow for a greater range of recreational users to access the Barwon River through Geelong. This will be achieved by modifying and enhancing existing structures within the Barwon River to increase the accessibility and improve safety. The new and enhanced landing at Balyang Sanctuary will provide more stable access to the river at various levels with an extended landing being fitted with better suited ...materials. It will also feature a recycled plastic assisted kayak launch ramp and a more gradual access ramp down to the landing from the walking trail. This structure will allow for many forms of unpowered water craft including canoeing, rowing, kayaking, outriggers and dragon boats. 15.01.2022 - The striking Swift Parrot - *Habitat the Grassy Eucalypt Woodlands. The striking Swift Parrot is listed as endangered and has a very high risk of extinction in the wild. The Swift Parrot (Lathamus discolour) breeds only in Tasmania. The entire population then flies across the Bass Strait to mainland SE Australia to forage on the flowering eucalypts in open forests and woodlands from autumn to late winter. These forest and woodlands provide critical habitat for the Swift... Parrots between their breeding seasons. On the mainland, the Swift Parrot is nomadic, dispersing widely depending on where the food is. You can see these parrots in our Grassy Eucalypt Woodlands of the Victorian Volcanic Plain, feeding on large mature flowering eucalypts. They love the nectar in these flowers and also eat some psyllids and lerps (sap-sucking bugs), seeds and other flowers. Sadly, habitat loss and fragmentation from firewood harvesting, clearing for residential and agricultural developments, attrition of old-growth trees and lack of regeneration are serious threats to the survival of the Swift Parrot. We are excited to hear if you have seen or heard Swift Parrots in your patch of Grassy Eucalypt Woodlands. Our Victorian Volcanic Plain Grassy Eucalypt Woodlands Project will support private landholders to improve the condition, connectivity and extent of these critically endangered woodlands. 14.01.2022 - The Fat-tailed Dunnart - *Habitat the Grassy Eucalypt Woodlands. The Fat-tailed Dunnart is a mouse-sized native marsupial but it is not related to the House Mouse. These nocturnal marsupials are closely related to quolls and Tasmanian devils, and consume a carnivorous diet, feeding mainly on small invertebrates such as beetles, spiders, slaters. True to their name, the Fat-Tailed Dunnart use their tail to store body fat when food is abundant and may lose their swollen tai...l appearance over winter when food becomes scarce. Fat-tailed Dunnarts occupy a variety of habitats including open woodland, low shrublands and arid shrublands. In Victoria, the Fat-tailed Dunnart is found in the western part of the State, calling the Victorian Volcanic Plain home. The tussocks, rocks, logs and cracking clay soils of the Grassy Eucalypt Woodlands provides critical habitat for this tiny marsupial. Vegetation clearing and loss of habitat have impacted upon their shelter and food resources. Predation by feral animals (cats and foxes) threatens the survival of many of Australians small mammals, including the Fat-tailed Dunnart. We are excited to hear if you have seen Fat-tailed Dunnarts in your patch of Grassy Eucalypt Woodlands. Our Victorian Volcanic Plain Grassy Eucalypt Woodlands Project will support private landholders to improve the condition, connectivity and extent of these critically endangered woodlands.
