25.01.2022 On Thursday February 11 1982, Cornwalls (at the time Cornwall Stodart) offices caught on fire and were destroyed in what was considered one of the largest fires in years. By 8am that morning staff had set up an office in a motel in Carlton. We had 5 appearances in court that morning, the opposition in all but one case agreed to an adjournment, the single objection was overruled by the judge. Other firms in the city helped us piece together our cases and lent us office suppli...es until we were back on our feet. The fire made the front page of The Herald pictured below with the article. #cornwalls #history #legalhistory
25.01.2022 Jack Dorsey provided brilliant insights on leadership and management at the @square X @fintechaustralia event last week. A key takeaway came when he was discussing being CEO of both Square and Twitter- if the CEO has to make every decision then the company would fail upon their departure. He believes that it is not his job to make decisions and if he has to make decisions then there is an organisaitonal failure that needs to be debugged. It is his job to ensure the right people are making decisions, to raise the bar and ensure that the company stays aligned with its purpose. #square #squareterminal #jackdorsey #fintec @ Stone & Chalk - M.01 Boardroom

20.01.2022 Last week we celebrated John Date's 60 year anniversary at Cornwalls. John joined Cornwalls in 1959 at the time the managing partners were of the belief that the way the firm was run through the 1930s is the way it should continue to be run. John had to fight for change, he was the first Partner to have a secretary with an electric typewriter. He fought for the firm to have a photocopier and to ensure that it was not misused (despite being the size of a grand piano) the manag...ing partner had it installed in his office so that he could monitor its use. At the time Cornwalls relied heavily on three major clients, to ensure the security and future of the firm John set about diversifying the client base. In 1971 the course of Johns career changed when he was introduced to a group of nuns who needed advice. Since then he has been practicing Canon law. He attended university in Canada and formalised his expertise in this speciality with a Masters from University of Melbourne. John has been a large part of Cornwalls history and is the reason that we operate in the manner we do today. He has embraced and championed innovation and always encouraged his peers to be their best. Thank you John for everything that you have done for the firm and everything that you continue to do. . . . #cornwalls #lifeatcornwalls #humansofcornwalls #60years #loyalty #melbourne #melbournelaw
