22.01.2022 The Start of Something Special in Alice Springs -11 September 2020 - Parrtjima A Festival in Light begins in Alice Springs tonight, and promises to do exactly what this year’s theme suggests by ‘Lifting Our Spirits’. The 10-day event, which runs from 11-20 September, showcases one of the world’s oldest cultures through some of the newest technologies, and this year’s light installations are as incredible as fans have come to expect from this world-class event. With 2km of ...the MacDonnell Ranges illuminated, and several large-scale installations arranged in formation around Alice Springs Desert Park, Parrtjima provides an inspiring, enriching experience that leaves attendees enchanted. This year again includes a program of events in Todd Mall, featuring music, talks and films. Some of the items on the program will be delivered in a slightly different format this year in line with Parrtjima’s COVID-19 Management Plan. For example, the Deep Listening talks with Tracey Holmes and Stan Grant will take place via a live cross from a studio in Sydney. Holmes and Grant are unable to travel to the Northern Territory due to border restrictions. There is also a new registration process in place to manage numbers. Due to popular demand, at present the Todd Mall events have a waitlist. If you have registered for an event you can no longer attend, please cancel your booking so someone else can enjoy the magic of Parrtjima. To manage your booking, find out more about the program or register to attend the Alice Springs Desert Park light shows, visit www.parrtjimaaustralia.com.au.

20.01.2022 "Advocates call for more facilities ...Council on the Ageing Northern Territory chief executive officer Sue Shearer said EH's case pointed to a much larger prob...lem in the Northern Territory, where more than 34 elderly patients currently lived in the Top End's two largest hospitals. These people, Ms Shearer said, should be in nursing homes not a hospital. She said high-needs dementia care patients often experienced "violent episodes" that could make the environment unsafe for staff, other patients and themselves. "We really do have to look at a very high-needs, very safe and very secure dementia unit for Territorians," she said. "For longevity, and maybe for improvement, to help with their mental capacity, they need other stimulus rather than just sitting in bed." See more

19.01.2022 COTA NT is inviting seniors and their family members, supported by aged care providers, and carers to voice their opinions on the Aged Care Royal Commission’s r...ecommendations. Please contact Janet Brown at COTA NT, 8941 1004, to register your interest and you will be provided with details of the Forum topics. You can attend at Spillett House (Covid restrictions apply) or use your computer to Zoom into the meeting. The Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety said from the beginning that they wanted to hear from people directly affected by the work of the Commission, and particularly the consumers of aged care services and their families and carers. In March 2020, Senior Counsel Assisting outlined in some detail many of the ideas that he expected would be recommendations put to the Commissioners for inclusion in their final report. And again, before the final report is finalised, they want to hear your views. COTA wants your views to be heard. Meeting to be held in approx. 2 weeks’, date and time to be confirmed.

11.01.2022 Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award returns to Alice Springs! The annual Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award will be held in Alice Springs at the Araluen Arts Centre for the second time in its history. Opening on 27 November 2020 and continuing until Sunday 7 March 2021, the exhibition is an important event that celebrates and acknowledges the contribution senior Territorians make. Established in the Year of the Older Person (1999), the award reflects the vitali...ty of older people and the art of portrait painting in the Northern Territory. The Araluen Arts Centre is now accepting entries for the 2020 Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award. Northern Territory artists are invited to enter a painted portrait of a Territorian aged 60 years or older. Finalists will be judged by an expert panel who consider the artistic and emotional qualities of the portrait. The Northern Territory Government has committed $30,000 towards the Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award, including a $7,000 first prize which will be awarded to the winning original portrait. We are encouraging all Territory artists 17 years and over to create a portrait celebrating senior Territorians. Entries can be submitted online at www.araluenartscentre.nt.gov.au Araluen’s Director Felicity Green said. There is a $2,000 prize for second prize and a $500 prize for third prize. The public can also vote for the People’s Choice Prize that will award an additional $1,000 to the artist who receives the highest number of votes from the public during the exhibition in Alice Springs. What makes a great portrait? Dr Al Strangeways, winner of the 2018 Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award, says as she paints she considers this question: How do people express who they are and what they are a part of through the landscapes of their faces and bodily gesture? The 2019 Portrait of a Senior Territorian award was won by Catherine Miles for her portrait Paul and Elma. Her painting celebrates the tireless efforts of Paul Patteson and his assistance dog, Elma, in raising funds for Retina Australia. The 2020 Portrait of a Senior Territorian Art Award exhibition will open at the Araluen Arts Centre in Alice Springs on Friday 27 November and run across summer until 7 March 2021.
