25.01.2022 Inspire a sense of hope in your child. When your child hears about or sees troubling events in the world it can be helpful to talk to them about how hope and kindness exist and that many people in the world work really hard to help people when scary things happen. Talk to them about the work of police officers, fire fighters, nurses, doctors, and ambulance drivers , teachers, kind friends, relatives and neighbours. Talk about people who work hard to make things right after a tragic event, these are the helpers who want to keep us safe.

23.01.2022 What keeps your child safe from harm? All kids need a network of people they can turn to for support beyond just their parents. Its especially important to be able to self-advocate and ask for help. Its a skill your child can start building as soon as they start school, and one theyll benefit from their entire lives. The people in your childs support network are ones that he/she (and you) trust and can rely on for practical and emotional help. People your child may already have in his/her network could be, grandparents, siblings, cousins, friends, teachers, neighbours to name a few. You may like to work with your child to develop a support network. As an example Lisa has kindly allowed us to use her Support Network List to assist your child when writing down his/her support network list.

22.01.2022 High school not only requires kids alarms to typically ring before 6am so that they are exhausted and sleep deprived, but it also introduces a completely new and unexpected level of peer pressure. Not necessarily in the sense of drinking or drugs, but their image, appearance, academic performance, athletic prowess, popularity, and social media persona. If they feel that they fall short or cannot measure up, it becomes overwhelming to go and face that stress each day. Their g...rades suffer, they gravitate toward the outcasts of the school for friends, and distance themselves from anything expected. These three transitions are very challenging for some kids, especially those who do not regulate their emotions well or those who are hard on themselves. A Counsellor can help them to work through their anxieties, frustrations, fears, and disappointments so that they are well-adjusted for the new academic setting in which they find themselves. And of course, the more aware you are about why they are struggling, the better you can help ease much of the confusion about the new, until it just becomes new normal instead.

22.01.2022 Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder ADHD is a particular condition that affects a young childs behaviour or development / learning. Many children with ADHD say they do not understand why they sometimes feel out of control or very lonely. ADHD is not the childs fault. We do not know exactly what causes ADHD. The primary goals for caring adults in the lives of children who have lost a parent or love one are to encourage them to accept their feelings rather than push them away and to offer support whenever it is needed. Often during the grief process, children will move back and forth through the various stages of grief. Being available to listen whenever theyre ready to talk may be what is most comforting to them.

This phase includes lots of behavioural, mental, emotional, physical and biological changes. Many teenagers who adjust themselves according to the changes remain normal and some continue to have concerns about the changes and need help in dealing with these problems. Theories I have used in the counselling process include: Cognitive-behavioural therapy helps teenagers r...educe their negative thought patterns and increase positive behaviours. Interpersonal therapy focuses on how the teenager relates to other people. Problem-solving therapy teaches teenagers positive ways to cope with their problems. Group therapy allows teenagers to meet with others who have similar issues and talk about their problems under the supervision of a counsellor. Family therapy is also beneficial in helping teens and their families understand and deal with teenage problems. 10.01.2022 When JC Baltz signed up for a triathlon with his son Ben, he never imagined the race would change their lives or touch so many other peoples. JC tells of the day he was photographed helping his now 14-year-old son who lost his leg to osteosarcoma. It was pouring cats and dogs and Im wondering, why are we even doing this? Ben was just 6 years old when his leg had to be amputated, he received a prosthetic leg one year later, enabling him to run. Since then he has completed at least 10 triathlons, and he also plays tennis, table tennis and baseball. Ben is an inspiration to us all.

Endorphins are triggered by the movements of the muscles in your face, which is interpreted by your brain, which in turn releases these chemicals. Endorphins are responsible for making us feel happy, and they also help lower stress levels. Faking a smile works as well as the real thing. The brain doesnt differentiate between real or fake as it interprets the positioning of the facial muscles in the same way. The more we stimulate our brain to release this chemical the more often we feel happier and relaxed.
