21.01.2022 Breaking news: WARNING Trigger warning: Suicide... We suggest if you or your child uses the popular App Tik Tok, that you make sure they stay off for the next 2...4 hours or so. Overnight, sadly, there was a suicide that took place on a Tik tok live which has made it's way into the feeds of many people around the world. The advice is to stay off Tik Tok for a 24 hour period until they have been able to take this video out of the algorithm. This is a very traumatising video. It is also circulating on MANY other social platforms (Facebook, Instagram and kids messenger), so please monitor your children. NB: if you are struggling and need to talk to someone, please reach out for help. 20.01.2022 Well, this is finally it - yesterday we packed and delivered our final bags, and closed up Waterloo for the last time. Our centre managers Carol, Jeff and the t...wo Lindas joined the regular Wednesday crew of DK, Jacq, Ana, Mike and May, and we celebrated the end of this work (and DK's birthday) with champagne, cake and cheese rolls. We were also thrilled to accept a Certificate of Appreciation and gift from Ellen and her team at Ethnic Community Services Co-operative, with whom we've loved working. The four week extension to our program - for which we thank Harris Farm Markets for the produce and our generous Facebook funders for their financial support - rounded out its overall duration to 6 months, over the course of which we delivered 25,000 bags reliably and with love and respect to those in need throughout a worrisome Autumn and a cold Winter. Just moments after delivering the last bags to Kinchela Boys Home Aboriginal Corporation yesterday afternoon, we were delighted to receive this lovely note from the City of Sydney Council: "Congratulations to you all on a wonderful and heart-warming sustained effort over these past 6 months. Your professionalism, generosity of time and ability to respond flexibly to emerging need has been nothing short of amazing. You have come together and made a huge difference and shown the power of collaboration across community, government and business. Well done to you all and thank you for everything you have achieved and for being so wonderful to work with". For our part, we are grateful to live in a city whose Councils (as we also include Randwick City Council here) care so deeply for their people, and we thank them for their brilliant, unstinting support. To all of the groups and charities we have engaged with to support your daily, vital, unheralded community work - thank you for the opportunity to connect, for trusting us to work with your brothers and sisters, and for your friendship. Although this program has now drawn to a close, the generosity of spirit that motivated us all to form our wonderful group, and to work together in the way we have, has not. How could it, when everyone who has worked with us feels so strongly that they've received more than they've given? We have shown that love overcomes fear, that kindness really does save the world, and we can keep showing this in everything we do. The world is changing and what we do matters. The spirit of VK Sydney Food Care will find new manifestations, including through the friendships we have formed and others we've inspired. On behalf of all the volunteers, our deepest thanks and best wishes. 19.01.2022 VALE MARCUS CAMPBELL Locals have contacted us sharing stories of what a lovely guy this Erskineville local was. He was a tall bloke of Zimbabwean heritage, alwa...ys ready with a warm hug or handshake. Apparently he made the Zimbabwe Olympic team in years past. Please share any stories you have about Marcus.
18.01.2022 We are thrilled to be nominated and selected by Counterpoint Community Services for the Redfern & Waterloo Volunteer Awards 2020. We wanted to share with you a...ll a few photos from our NSW representatives - Jenny, Allison and Wallis as they visited the Counterpoint Community Services yesterday for this (social distanced) award presentation. Over the past few months, many of us have learned that we can find strength and resilience in togetherness and make changes by helping and caring one another in our communities, even in times of uncertainty. Changing communities, changing lives would not be made possible without our volunteers and our supporters, we are grateful for their contributions and the encouragement we received. We will continue to serve our community members who are in need as long as we can.

02.01.2022 Does anyone remember when the Queen visited Redfern/Waterloo? I remember being amongst those who lined the streets when the Queen, and Prince Philip, came to officially open the tallest of the towers in the Waterloo Public Housing complex (1977).
