24.01.2022 EGG FARMERS FACE TOUGH TIMES Egg farmers are being hit hard as feed grain prices nearly doubled in the last six months due to the widespread drought, slashing p...roducers farmgate returns by more than 20 per cent. Egg Farmers of Australia chief executive officer John Dunn says he saw feed prices rise by 40 per cent since February. "I think in February feed was selling for about $250 a tonne and today, you are looking at $450." The price increase is impacting Central Queensland egg producer Chris Galvin. He runs 1,200 hens at his property in Bajool and says it is difficult to stay competitive. "The cost of grain has skyrocketed lately. They source some grain from South Australia and truck it all up here," he says. "I understand why [the price] has to go up but it's really hard now being an egg producer."
