25.01.2022 DEAN PERRETT together with Kelly and Marion Dixon and Ryan Garland won Bush Ballad of the Year at the 2021 Golden Guitar Awards on Saturday, 23 January. The award was particularly emotional as 94 year old Kelly accepted his very first Golden Guitar trophy after many thousands of songs he's written throughout his lifetime. Quite possibly the most well known written by both Kelly and his wife is Leave Him In The Longyard recorded by Slim Dusty.... In February 2020, Country Music Capital News featured Kelly in Where Are They Now. A great story by writer and photographer John Elliott Photo by John Elliott Excerpt from Capital News below I chose to model my writing on Will Ogilvie who was my hero and in 1939 when I was 12-years-old I won a prize of five pound for the best written verse in the paper in St George. Kelly’s father wasn’t impressed. My father never spoke to me for six months because he was only earning five quid a week to feed a family. By the time Kelly turned 13, he was committed to being a writer. I knew then what I wanted to do and 80 years later I’m still at it. He has just finished a project working with Norma O’Hara Murphy on songs for her new album. Then he has to finish writing 12 rodeo songs for a band from Wagga. Towards the end of 2019 he had four new songs recorded by Tasmanian artists, one by Laura Downing and four by Jeff Brown. Not a bad effort for a 92-year-old. One hundred and sixty-three songs published around the world, and 37 artists have recorded his songs. Subscribe to Capital News 6 issues per year and keep up to date with all our special features.
