25.01.2022 Here's the fourth Kilkie story with a picture that can be copied for colouring SLEEPY SKIPPER It was one of those sunny afternoons when you can feel your eyes closing. Even the banana trees on the hills and the mangroves along the river bank seemed to be drooping too. Kilkie made her way downstream, chugging away quietly while the tide ripples rocked her drowsy passengers and the skipper too. You mightn’t believe it, but they all nodded off, kids propped against one anot...her on the long seats and the skipper standing up at the wheel. On they went, straight and safe, until they came to a bend in the river. Bump. Everyone was suddenly awake, as Kilkie gently ran aground on a mud bank. I have heard (from two of the older girls sitting near the wheelhouse) that the skipper may have said a rude word. He slipped Kilkie out of forward gear and into reverse. The gentle chug of the diesel turned into a roar and ever so slowly Kilkie backed off the shallows into the deeper water. How embarrassing! See more

23.01.2022 For those who've been asking here's another Kilkie story and colour -in picture. TEN GREEN BOTTLES Of course, sleepy afternoons were rare on board Kilkie, but lively mornings were quite common. Children going to school boarded at their little jetties, or their neighbours’ wharves, found their friends and sat next to them. They’d compare lunch bags and what they’d heard on the radio the night before. Some of the luckier ones had a new thing called a television at home, and th...ey’d tell the others about the shows they’d watched: Superman, Roy Rogers, Skippy, Casey Jones, F Troop, My Favourite Martian and the Mickey Mouse Club. Do you think they played games on their phones or Ipads? No, those hadn’t been invented then. The closest thing to a mobile phone was two empty jam tins joined by fishing line. One child would hold the tin to his or her ear while another would hold the line tight and speak into the other tin. Rocket science, eh? Games came in a box with a board and dice. The funny thing was, they were fun. Something everyone could join into was a song and Kilkie heard versions of Row, row ,row your boat, Skippy the Bush Kangaroo and Yellow Submarine. You know the kind of thing, songs everyone knew the words to and could sing over the sound of Kilkie’s motor. Of course there was always a big groan from the others when the Bellingham twins would start: Ninety- nine green bottles hanging on the wall. It was a long, long, long song. See more

19.01.2022 Here is the 2nd chapter of the Kilkie story. Copy the picture to colour in. HOMEWORK DISASTER Young Laurie was ten years old and always hungry. He’d borrowed a knife, spoon and a little bag of salt from his mum’s kitchen on the way out. His dad grew avocado trees so he picked a couple of avos on his way downhill to the river. He was wearing his school uniform: Tshirt, shorts and no shoes. (You didn’t have to wear shoes to school in those days). When he reached the jetty, he... sat down on the deck, cut the stones out of the fruit and ate them with his spoon with lots of salt. (Salt wasn’t bad for you in those days). He just finished his snack when he heard Kilkie’s bell ring, and the little ferry came up alongside to let him aboard. The skipper said hello then pushed the lever to make the ferry move out into the stream. Some of the other kids were already on board. Little Brucey Bigg was waving so Laurie sat next to him and they had a contest to see who could burp the loudest. After that they compared their running writing homework. The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog was a bit ink-stained because then people used pen and ink. No biros ,you see. My quick brown fox jumps out of the lazy frog yelled Brucie and he held his homework book out of the window. Sadly he didn’t hold it tight enough and the exercise book dropped into the river and sank. If you’re kept in at lunch time, can I eat your lunch? asked Laurie. See more

07.01.2022 We have printed a Kilkie story and colouring book for our charterers. In the coming weeks we will publish Kilkie stories.

06.01.2022 KILKIE STORY Ages ago (maybe even before your Gran was born) two cyclones crossed the coast of Queensland, one after the other. It was very windy, but worse still, it rained for days. Old boats leak mainly from the top (not the bottom as you’d expect) and mother hen filled up with rain water and sank in the Maroochy River. She had been a school ferry for the kids who lived along the river. How were the children going to travel from their farms and houses to the school up ri...ver? A new boat was ordered and built on the banks of the Brisbane River down south in 1955. The shipwrights (the people who build boats) laid a hardwood frame, then nailed on sheets of plywood to make her skin. A tractor motor was joined to a propeller by a long steel shaft to push the boat along not fast, but safely. When the new little ship was ready to be launched someone had a clever idea. Why not call her Kilkie which means mother bird in aboriginal? So the children would go to school by the river, protected by a new mother bird. Kilkie chugged her way north through Moreton Bay until she reached the sea. She had a fine time rising and falling with the waves until she reached the mouth of the river that was to be her home. The entrance was quite shallow and Kilkie touched the bottom a couple of times. All the windows in her wheelhouse cracked. How many broken windows would that have been? A man came the next day when she was alongside (that just means tied up at a wharf) and put five new panes of glass in Kilkie’s frames. She was ready for work and for almost twenty years she carried children to and from school. See more

04.01.2022 Here is the third Kilkie story, to be read aloud by an adult while a child colours in the picture (which can be copied and printed). THE CAT IN THE HAT BOX Oh- Oh, said the skipper as Janie climbed down into the ferry at the school wharf. David Milligan did it just before lunch, she answered and tossed her plaits as if she didn’t care that one of them was dyed with ink. I FIXED him. She lowered her voice and the skipper wondered what she’d done to the poor kid. No o...ne teased Janie if they knew what was good for them. But Janie had a soft side that the Kilkie kids going home down the river were about to find out. This was the afternoon she rescued Sinbad. Lots of interesting things float up and down a river with the tide, and the skipper would sometimes pass close to bits of wood, floats, hats and other flotsam (that’s what he called it) to have a sticky. That’s when he saw a lady’s hat box floating, right in midstream. He slowed Kilkie (who never went fast anyway) and saw what seemed to be a very wet fur hat inside. Well, you see the strangest things, he said to himself and was just about to make way again, when the hat moved. It wasn’t a hat- it was a very wet kitten. It was probably meowing too but you couldn’t hear it over the sound of Kilkie’s motor. Next thing you know, the skipper told his wife that night, Janie’s hanging over the steps. Yes, Janey quite bravely and recklessly too, managed to scoop up the kitten out of the hat box and brought it aboard. The hat box floated away , the skipper did his narna’, wiped his forehead with an oily hanky and Kilkie moved off again with an extra passenger. Janey kept the kitten that she called Sinbad (ask your grandparents why) and it grew into a nice tabby that didn’t like being washed. Well , most cats don’t, do they? See more

01.01.2022 Here's the last Kilkie story : THE GREAT STORM OF ’67 You remember that a storm in 1954 began Kilkie’s life as a school ferry. She survived when the two cyclones of 1967 made the Maroochy River flood. They caused damage up and down what was usually a calm waterway. The flood water gushed out past Pincushion Island into a Coral Sea where the wind had whipped up big waves. Even when the storm was over, Kilkie couldn’t motor against the current for a couple of days, and staye...d tied up to a strong wharf in Maroochydore . When it was safe for the children to use the river to go to school, the skipper had to be very careful not to run into the tree trunks and other dangerous things that floated downstream. Kilkie zig-zagged back and forth so she wouldn’t hit the large logs, while the smaller branches bump- bump- bumped along her sides. There were all sorts of other things floating past: timber sheds, plastic flower pots, old chairs and rowing boats that hadn’t been pulled up high enough on the river banks. There were hat stands, straw hats and hat boxes [without cats], guitars, surfboards, palm leaves, coconuts, cushions, wooden ladders and elephants. (Well, perhaps not elephants.) Over the next few days the water levels went down and the debris that hadn’t been swept out to sea was left high and dry on the banks until the next flood. A few years later, in 1974, another cyclone caused the river to flood again. While kilkie strained at her mooring lines, the little farm and village jetties were washed away again! By this time there were good roads along the river bank linking the towns. Sadly, Kilkie wasn’t needed any more as kids could travel to school by bus or car . Some could even ride their bikes. The days were a bit lonely for Kilkie , with no skipper and worse still no children and their songs. Don’t worry , though ,because one quiet afternoon a man walked down the wharf to inspect the little ferry. I’ve got just the job for you,’ he said. See more
