24.01.2022 This article from Women's Agenda gives me the heebie jeebies. What do you think? We know that:... - Many parents will be under more financial pressure and will be reducing childcare as it's currently offered (big centre, full day, usually minimum 2 days). - Childcare is a key factor in holding women back from fulfilling their career purpose and being involved in the economy. - In 2012, the Grattan Institute said that if we could increase the number of females in the workforce by around 6 per cent, that would mean an increase to Australia’s GDP of $25 billion a year. In global terms, before the pandemic, Australia’s childcare was prohibitively expensive for families and particularly punishing in effect to secondary earners, who in Australia are more often than not women. Given we know women are bearing the brunt of job and income losses post COVID, we know the return of childcare fees will make paid work even more difficult for women to maintain." ... "Labor’s Amanda Rishworth described this snap back on childcare by the Government as potentially creating a handbrake on the economy. For many working mothers, it will be a handbrake on their careers, and consequently their businesses, their pay, their superannuation and their financial freedom." Cowork Coplay was set up to enable more women with young kids to participate in the economy / their careers. We need more options opening up now, not fewer. 21.01.2022 Such a great tip. I love getting out for a walk! I recently set a 'fresh air daily' goal with my accountability group. Makes a huge difference to me. What mental, emotional, spiritual wellbeing goals have you put in place lately?... #womeninbusiness #coworking
21.01.2022 Taking a small break from the weekly Tuesday online networking and coworking sessions while I organise some *special* guest speakers... But if you need someone to talk to, or have any ideas - please message. It will provide me a reason to put down the chocolate bar(s)... Way too many being consumed in these last weeks
20.01.2022 Absolutely brilliant short article by Eve Rodsky via Thrive Global. There is no 'one way' to navigate this time. "Save yourself from burnout and yielding to external pressure by making intentional choices that best serve your family based on what’s most valuable to you and your partner. If you get stuck or don’t agree, zero in on your why the why something is important to you in the first place." #family #WFH #workingfromhome #covid19au
19.01.2022 For anyone looking for some upskilling, these FREE sessions look great. Short sharp, get in and get a taste. Some offer introductions to skills like coding and digital marketing, which are growth areas. ... Which ones are you most interested in going to?

18.01.2022 A lot of people are talking about the world resetting. Quiet streets, cleaner air. Quiet time for some people. So much noise for others - in our homes and in our heads.... Time with family. But no more coffee dates with friends (unless walking!). No entertaining the toddler with the shopping centre train rides. Questioning money and consuming - what do we spend and why? Do we want the old life back? Do we really? Locked down (& not always nicely). Burned out. Time Warped. Adapting. Revitalising. Emerging. What have we learned? What will you take with you as things start to churn a bit more? Have you felt a deep desire to create and build? Tell us more.
16.01.2022 What’s a dream that you’ve been scared to pursue?
14.01.2022 Poignant. And a common experience for many mums, in my experience. "We are often told we have to try harder, not to rock the boat, or to speak up and we are compared to others. This reinforces our insecurities that we’re not good enough. Then, we withdraw our precious creative energy, stop trusting ourselves, and we cloak ourselves in negative self-perception. This ends up with us living in a world of scarcity. And we think, if we achieved more or had more, we would feel th...at we are enough. But when we think that way, our bucket becomes a bottomless pit with a leak at the bottom. No matter how much money we make or how many milestones we hit, we never feel the sense of fullness within ourselves." And one of the best tips I've found is: When you're judging yourself, think: what would you say to a friend who is in the same situation? Something supportive. Something kind. So be supportive and kind to yourself as well. When we've run Cowork Coplay sessions, the sense of community and support is strong. It helps us all get out of our heads and feel ok/normal, even with the challenges we're feeling.
14.01.2022 If you've been dreaming up ideas for a brand new or existing business, consider applying for the Idea to Impact program by Canberra Innovation Network. In short: A systematic program of five fortnightly workshops (three hours online, Tuesdays) designed to get you clarifying and testing your idea with customer conversations Accountability to keep moving (fortnightly, alternating with workshops but on Thursdays, different times available during business hours)... Networking opportunities Full scholarships available thanks to support from ACT Government. In the talk I went to today, from the ACT government, it is clear that Andrew Barr ACT Chief Minister has a focus on expanding businesses in a whole range of industries and this is why it's supporting this and other programs. He also said that getting more women into secure work is an initiative they want to take further. (Let's get some more focus on supporting childcare for early-stage parent entrepreneurs, perhaps?) Tip: If you get into the program, and you need to put your child/ren into care for the first time for the Tuesday sessions, remember the hours' worked on the program and your business idea count towards the activity test for the Child Care Subsidy. Hopefully in future there'll be accountability sessions after hours for those who need it but I'm hoping, if I get accepted, that there'll be a session over Thurs nap time or my husband can hold the fort, thanks to flexible working from home arrangements.
13.01.2022 And the findings are the same in Australia... "A Center for American Progress (CAP) poll found that mothers commonly stated that if they had access to more affordable and reliable childcare, they would be able to increase their earnings and progress within their respective careers." With the evolution of 'next normal' post-Covid 19 let's get more options on the table for community funding. Flexible, affordable childcare options that work for entrepreneurial and job-focused mu...ms, in particular. https://www.coworkingresources.org/blog/coworking-childcare Economic Security4Women Women's Agenda HerCanberra #coworking #genderequity
13.01.2022 Parents. I'm enquiring with northside venues to find somewhere super chilled and family friendly (with coffee and snacks) to host some Cowork Coplay sessions! I'm thinking 2-2.5 hours: Meet others in business or wondering what next career step may be Bring a laptop to work on a task or three (we'll do some sessions using Pomodoro productivity technique)... Have a coffee and a laugh. Who's interested? Q: Would you need a (shared) nanny/babysitter or are your kids old enough to entertain themselves nearby? Q: Particular day of the week suit better?
09.01.2022 If you've been thinking you might like to dip your toe into business, great! Even if you have a job you love, a side hustle can be an awesome way to unleash another part of you and make some cash. I always recommend people check out Chris Guillebeau's Side Hustle School podcast and website. Here is a thought-provoking list of ideas to get started. 08.01.2022 While this post doesn't tell the full story... Look at the number of men who lost full-time jobs vs women! That's a huge difference. There are big problems with reporting unemployment figures in Australia. For example, they don't count people on JobKeeper who may not have a job to go back to, nor people working a few hours a week. They are considered 'employed'. The stats don't show underemployment. Compounding the shockwave is that with changes to the childcare system, women... have been doing more caring, meaning they can't be working/looking for work. Research by Parenthood and others (not sure if ABS looking in to this but I hope so) shows that due to income some families need to reduce their daycare anyway, until they can get back on an even keel.

06.01.2022 I'd add: '2-3 days to focus on all the content I need to write without having to clean up after a toddler and do the cat litter'... Writing retreat anyone??
06.01.2022 Lots of people are discussing this topic now. Are you? What DO and DON'T we as individuals and society want back in our lives after Covid-19 upheaval? I'm watching these discussions in articles and online with with interest. Having bucked the trend of the 9-5 for a few years before having a baby, piecing together a day-to-day lifestyle I choose has been something I've been working on for a while. It's tricky. But it's a great feeling to be able to say 'no, I don't want to do... that' or 'yes, I'll try that'. What do you hope won't go back to normal? Are you looking forward to seeing and working with people again?
