25.01.2022 Today we spent helping our friends at Arbor Carbon by collecting foliage and timber samples from some Norfolk island pines in Cottesloe Western Australia. There are many that are declining and hopefully the pathologists can determine the reason and develop a management plan. No obvious entry points or legions and apparently random in its dispersal.... I would be happy to pass on any feedback to Arbor Carbon to assist them to improve the health of these iconic trees if anyone has had experience of this malady.
24.01.2022 On the way home from the Gold Coast after a meeting with the Practicing arborist committee. Some of the best male and female climbers in Australia and the world on the committee with me. They are all very dedicated individuals and a pleasure to work with. We looked over the venues and trees for the upcoming Australian tree climbing championships scheduled for May.

22.01.2022 Not a nice day outside today but enjoyed working at Araluen Botanic Park removing a canker infected cypress

18.01.2022 A cracking day for some powerline pruning on this mature flooded gum Eucalyptus rudis in Guildford today. The last time we pruned this stunning tree was 5 years ago so I think that's good value for managing an asset of this size near conductors. The client permitted us to crown clean, removing deadwood and congestive growth, and reduce the end weight of laterals towards the house to enhance the aesthetic value and mitigate the risk in the higher target areas. ... This is a good example of where a climbing arborist has a lesser disruptive effect on the location as we didn't require an Elevated work platform (EWP). Therefore no traffic disruption, and with spotters in place, only minor pedestrian interference. I assessed the level of risk for this operation to be lower for the infrastructure (conductors and consumers), the workers, and pedestrian and vehicular traffic. In addition, an EWP would have had no chance of accessing the house side of the tree. Advantage climbing arborist.
16.01.2022 So glad we had an early finish today with the temperature rising to +40 degrees. So a great time to have lunch at the Hampton boat club in Dampier and fo the tourist thing.
15.01.2022 I was interviewed on Curtin FM's Let's talk gardening program in February. You can listen to it here https://soundcloud.com//lets-talk-gardening-february-8-2020 from approx. 18.50 minutes to 31.40 minutes.... Yes i'm a bit slow putting it up but it just wasn't a priority in the grand scheme of things. Hope you enjoy listening.
14.01.2022 Dead trees are an important part of the ecology providing habitat or food to many animals, invertebrates and fungi however this one was too close to buildings and represented an unacceptable risk.
13.01.2022 Very disappointed in people today! My wife broke down at the lights in the right turn lane on Roe Highway and Morrison Road. No-one wants to be in that situation and maybe not a worst case scenario but pretty close. She was trying to be strong when she was telling me about how lots of drivers were not just honking but abusing her.... But I could tell that the situation disturbed her as it would anyone. It didn't seem to matter that she had her hazard lights on. People were pulling up next to her and yelling at her "Why aren't you turning?" And maybe other things that she hasn't mentioned to me. I felt like I let her down for not being there for her but really all those impatient and stupid people that couldn't see that she was immobile and in need of assistance let themselves down. You're just not Aussies! I bet you drape our flag over your shoulders on Australia day like a cape. Well there's so much more to being an Aussie than that! So thankful to Glen who stopped and helped to push her out of the way. You're a bloody legend mate. The nicest thing about him is that he would do that for even people he didn't know. Try some kindness on your journey through life. It doesn't cost anything but it's worth so much and has such a positive impact.
09.01.2022 Yesterday we spent about 3 hours providing powerline clearance from this stunning 30m lemon scented gum Corymbia citriodora. Usually for mature trees that have been co-existing with powerlines for years, only regrowth requires removal. Something to consider when comparing prices is that the Western Power contractor would only remove the vegetation that their elevated work platform can reach. ... We prune to the sky just as the Western Power notice insists.
09.01.2022 Golf courses are fantastic green spaces within the framework of suburbia. Each course is usually representative of the vegetation endemic to the region. This one at Kwinana has some spectacular examples of tuart Eucalyptus gomphocephala and grass trees Xanthorrhoea sp. Both of which could be hundreds of years old and could thrive for many more. The tree canopy combined with irrigated turf are effective means to mitigate the effects of Urban Heat Islands whilst providing re...fuge for micro and macro wildlife. Walking through these green spaces invigorates the soul and the exercise strengthens the body. See more
07.01.2022 Check out the amazing Tree of Life in north Dublin. This eye-catching landmark at the north east corner of St Anne’s Park in Raheny was inspired by the wildlife... of the much-loved park and nearby Bull Island. Also known as the Peace Tree, it was carved from a 200-year-old Monterey Cyprus Tree by sculptor Tommy Craggs with a chainsaw. Yes - a chainsaw! See more
06.01.2022 Happy National Eucalypt Day! Today we celebrate the diversity and significance of all eucalypts: Angophora, Corymbia and Eucalyptus. If you use Twitter, you can join in the conversation today with the #NationalEucalyptDay tag. Let’s get Australia talking about our iconic gumtrees!
05.01.2022 An interesting job today removing a failed tree from a walk trail in the John Forrest National Park. Later we got to drive through the disused Swan View rail tunnel built in 1895. Despite all the weather alerts, its been a beautiful spring day so far.
05.01.2022 Thanks to the Darling Range Branch of the Naturalist Club for inviting me to deliver a presentation on the benefits of trees and how to care for them. They have some very intelligent members and I was made very welcome.
