25.01.2022 Today we say farewell to Dhulikhel Hospital ( at least for now)... I gave my last lecture to the department of surgery this morning. Another breast screening clinic where we gave out donated prosthetics and mastectomy bras to very happy and grateful patients. We hope to return in April 2020 to further our collaboration with Dhulikhel Hospital. Teaching a younger generation of students and surgeons to consider breast cancer treatment in a comprehensive holistic way considering the entire person and the long term effects of treatment. They were very appreciative, welcoming and looking forward to our return.

22.01.2022 Dr Emilia Dauway from Nepal: Women are women no matter where you are in the world. Today at a community outreach centre for the hospital we discussed health issues all women face. When women get together there are stories that are shared, experiences, and lots of laughter. Language is never a barrier because there is the universal language of laughter, smiles and a common bond.

21.01.2022 Dhulikhel Hospital and Restore More: Today Dr Banira Karky and I did the first breast screening program at the hospital. Dr Ram who suggested we do a selfie began the hospital on this land 25years ago in two rooms. The nonprofit hospital has grown into 400 beds with 400 doctors. He has built a medical campus as well as 22 outreach centres all through fundraising. We have seen so many women who wanted to be proactive about their health that we have had to schedule another day... this week to screen more that we could not examine today! I am also grateful to all who have believed in the vision and mission of Restore More as we have been notified that we are a recognised and registered ACNC National Australian nonprofit. Although it was a lot of work to become registered the real work begins now! In the words of Walt Disney, All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue it. I’m a dreamer ! Together let’s make dreams come true See more

17.01.2022 Happiness is a place! This is the Kingdom of Bhutan. The land of monks, Dzongs, and prayer wheels. They do not measure a GDP (Gross Domestic Product) they measure happiness There is the Gross National Happiness (GNH). There is the understanding that happiness is not dependent on material wealth, but on emotional, physical and spiritual well-being of all living things within our environment. This is a very special place. Bordered by Tibet to the north and India to the south with the Himalayan Mountains traversing through. Stunningly beautiful!

14.01.2022 #ilooklikeasurgeon The Royal Australasian College of Surgeon’s annual congress in Bangkok took place this week. I had the pleasure of meeting, collaborating and yes socialising with amazing women surgeons ( and men surgeons too). For me it is a big deal. When I was in training in New Orleans I was the second female surgical resident at Ochsner hospital to train in the general surgery program. I was also the second African American. There were no women surgeons in the hospita...l. The program is now 40% women!!! Still women and blacks are underrepresented in the field of surgery. However, it is incredible to see the growth and progress in the field of surgery in the 20 years I have been practicing. It’s important to lift each other up, have the courage to be your authentic self and stand in your truth. It is also equally important to have strong men with emotional intelligence be supportive and lift us up too #womensurgeons #racs2019 #mindfulness #emotionalintelligence See more

13.01.2022 RESTORE More fundraising is now in the Gold Coast!!!

12.01.2022 Restore More and Rotary Gladstone: Congratulations to the Rotary Gladstone’s Long Lunch. Thank you for inviting me to share my words as your keynote speaker and for donating a portion of the proceeds to Restore More. Amazing work that you are doing in our local and global community. The Rotary and all charities provide opportunities for us all to share our individual gifts in making our world a better place. We all have a unique talent, gift or knowledge that we should have the courage to share.

11.01.2022 Everyone came to support our Restore More Community Outreach Initiative: A Woman’s Right To Choose even the cows! I encountered a mob of cows while driving there I’m not kidding there were about 1000 cows in the middle of the road and I had to stop driving. So when we go regional and remote, we go out there!!!There was great support from Rolleston Community Health Centre and the Breast And Prostate Cancer Association of Emerald. Now there are more women informed of breast cancer treatment options. Those women will tell other women and there will be a ripple effect of less fear around breast cancer and more empowered informed patients. Where to next?!

09.01.2022 Restore More Campaign: A Woman’s Right to Choose. No it’s not that choice! It’s our community outreach initiative providing women in geographically remote areas information regarding current breast cancer treatment options including breast preservation and breast reconstruction options when mastectomy is necessary! Empowering women with knowledge thereby enabling an informed choice and decision instead of fear. Please join us at 10 AM Rolleston Health Clinic and 3:30 PM Emerald Townhall Supper Room on September 7. We are only as great as our last success. Restore More continues moving forward impacting one woman at a time.

08.01.2022 CrossFit and High Tea?!Those two don’t seem to go together I was invited to be the guest speaker at the XO all women’s CrossFit Gym to raise funds for the Rockhampton Hospital Oncology Department after one of their CrossFit member and competitor was diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. The high tea was held at the gym. We discussed the importance of self care and self awareness the best that we can. I wrote this because even when we do our best to care for ourselves ( eati...ng the right foods and exercising and maintaining our mental well being possibly through the practice of mindfulness or meditation) we will still have physical and mental struggles and challenges. It is part of our human experience. But we can do our best to support our physical and mental well-being despite those experience to live our best life possible. Thank you XO for inviting me and Restore More to participate in such a worthy cause and event. Keep supporting a healthy community See more

03.01.2022 It is important to always consider the patient journey during any treatment. As doctors, hospitals and health systems it is important to offer best practice taking into consideration patient safety, efficiency and efficacy. All patients should have access to excellent care and outcomes regardless of geographic location. So no matter where you are in the world always make an effort to be innovative, keep the patient first, and help reduce disparities In healthcare.
