25.01.2022 The Senate passed the Greens bill for a federal corruption watchdog 1 year ago today, so why are we still waiting? Maybe its because the Morrison government is up to its eyeballs in dirty donations, deals for mates, and pork-barrelling? Times up Morrison. Lets get this done.

25.01.2022 Here's how your Senators voted last week
25.01.2022 Q: Why isnt Parliament sitting today? A: Cause the Liberals think its very complicated. Today, like millions of others, I did all my meetings via the int...ernet. Parliament was supposed to be sitting, but was cancelled meeting face-to-face was too risky, but theres no digital solution?! Even in difficult times its vital that the important work still gets done. Morrison needs to front up with an actual solution its very complicated is not good enough. See more

23.01.2022 Go to work sick or miss a days wages? No-one should have to make this choice during a global pandemic. The Fed government could help employers meet the costs ...of giving all employees paid sick leave. It would be money well spent. The Greens have a bill for 14 days paid COVID-19 sick leave and well push the government to support it when parliament resumes. See more
22.01.2022 Labor has lined up with Morrison on gas. This is a dangerous move that will completely blow our carbon budget and is disastrous for the climate. Gas is a fossil... fuel, and a major cause of the climate crisis. Gas is just as dirty as coal. Why are the Liberals and Labor in lockstep on gas? Could be the millions in donations both parties have accepted from gas companies. We don’t need new gas. Solar is already the cheapest form of energy in history. Join the fight to keep gas where it belongs in the ground: https://greens.org.au/no-new-gas
22.01.2022 The Coalition and Labor both support the so-called gas led recovery from Covid. But in 2019-20 28 gas companies generated $55Billion in revenue and paid $0 in t...ax. If that wasn’t enough, the gas industry has sacked 10% of its already small workforce, polluted our atmosphere, made millions in political donations and shipped most of their profits off-shore.
19.01.2022 When the COVID-19 crisis is over, what shape will Australia's future take? I spoke in parliament this week about not leaving anyone behind and making sure our r...ecovery sets us up for a fairer, prosperous and sustainable future. Today in the Saturday Paper, Adam outlines the Greens vision for a Green New Deal, a bold and creative plan to tackle inequality, address climate change, and create new jobs.

16.01.2022 Another day, another public hand-out to the Morrison Governments Murdoch mates. The PM has handed another $10million to Fox Sports to broadcast womens and nic...he sport, taking the total amount of corporate welfare under this program to Murdoch to $40million. The Morrison Government is handing out millions of dollars of taxpayer money to a private, corporate broadcaster while slashing funding at the public broadcaster. Any support for the broadcast of womens sport should be going to the ABC and SBS which fans can watch for no further cost.

13.01.2022 The climate doesnt care about politics. It just needs an Australian government to show some leadership and deal with the climate crisis.
13.01.2022 Cutting JobKeeper today to fund a tax cut for multi-millionaires next year is savagely unfair and economically illiterate. Scott Morrison is cutting JobKeeper t...o fund an early tax cut for Clive Palmer. This is trickle-down brutality. With so many businesses struggling, unemployment still through the roof and Victoria under lockdown, we can’t afford to cut JobKeeper. If the money is there to give millionaires an early tax cut, then the money’s there to keep JobKeeper going in the middle of a recession. The Senate can stop the JobKeeper cuts. The Greens will move to block the cuts when Parliament resumes next week.

13.01.2022 Theres only 1 job for every 15 unemployed Queenslanders on JobSeeker, but the Government is considering winding back JobSeeker rates during the next sitting of... Parliament. This could mean pushing people back down to abysmally low and inappropriate payments that dont allow them to live safely and with dignity. No one should be left without proper support, especially during an unemployment crisis. Thats why Im joining the thousands of people taking action today, calling on the Federal Government to permanently raise the rates of our income support payments. Email the PM: https://thegreens.good.do/raisetherate/email-PM/ Call the Treasurer, Josh Frydenberg: https://thegreens.good.do/raisetherate/call-the-Treasurer/ Its time. #RaiseTheRate for good.
12.01.2022 Yesterday the Government's JobSeeker bill was referred to a Senate Inquiry which will report on March 12. A Senate inquiry provides an opportunity for organisa...tions and individuals to participate in policy making by expressing their views in writing or in person. This inquiry is currently accepting submissions until March 5 and is an opportunity for jobseekers to share their experiences living on JobSeeker. It's so important the inquiry hears how the Government's proposed $3.57 a day increase to the JobSeeker and Youth Allowance payment will affect people looking for work. More information on how to make a submission can be found here: https://www.aph.gov.au//Co/Senate/How_to_make_a_submission The link to make a submission is here: https://www.aph.gov.au//Community_/StrengthenIncomeSupport

10.01.2022 The Cashless Debit Card only serves to further stigmatise and punish people on income support who are already living below the poverty line. Help us #ScrapTheCard and prevent a national rollout https://greens.org.au/campaigns/scrap-card
10.01.2022 Our democracy is broken. We need to get the influence of big money out and start restoring integrity into our parliament. Today I'll introduce my Banning Dirty ...Donations Bill to stop all political donations from industries known to have a corrupting influence on democracy: the mining, banking, gambling, alcohol, pharmacaeutical, defence, tobacco and property development industries. It will also cap all other donations from any body or individual to no more than $3,000 per three-year term.

08.01.2022 This crisis has shown that having a roof over your head and a social safety net is more important than ever. My colleague Senator Rachel Siewert has been a lon...g-standing, tireless advocate for raising the rate. She is pushing the government to retain the fairer, higher rate of social support after the immediate health crisis has passed. The Greens also strongly support building better after the pandemic, literally. We can help wake the economy from hibernation by building quality, sustainable public housing that gives people somewhere safe to call home
08.01.2022 Like many in the community, my team will be working from home for the foreseeable future - and while the scenery has changed, our commitment to championing a fu...ture for all of us hasnt! 08.01.2022 Care should be about people, not profit. For years, the aged care sector has been profiting off miserable residents and overworked staff. Thats why we are ca...lling on the Morrison government to invest $3bn in aged care to free the sector from corporate clutches. https://bit.ly/30HCQ8h
07.01.2022 The Cashless Debit Card is cruel, costly, and has been found to have no substantive impact on crime and addiction. The Government is STILL refusing to reveal... the cost of running and expanding the cards despite trials that found the Government paid more than $10,000 to manage each card of income support to recipients receiving less than $15,000 a year! Join the community campaign to stop the card by following No Cashless Welfare Debit Card Australia and The Say NO Seven
07.01.2022 Proud to be the first Senator speaking remotely as the chamber enters the 21st century. Would be great to continue that trend to modernity by seeing more women in Cabinet and a more representative parliament! Thanks to all parly staff who worked overtime on the tech.
05.01.2022 Today, Attorney-General Christian Porter revealed that he was the Cabinet Minister at the centre of rape allegations. The Greens support calls from the alleged ...victim’s lawyer, family and friends for an independent inquiry into those allegations and for the Attorney General to stand down while the inquiry is undertaken. Anything less sends the wrong message to survivors of sexual assault. Parliament should be setting the standard for good behaviour, not using flimsy arguments about precedent setting and ancient history to protect the boys' club. Today’s press conference, with Christian Porter denying the rape allegations, without having read details of those allegations, will have been extremely distressing to sexual assault survivors everywhere. After the powerful speech by Grace Tame encouraging survivors to speak out, the subtext of the Attorney-General’s denials and of the Prime Minister’s dismissal of the allegations earlier this week, is that the government doesn’t believe women. This will have a chilling effect on survivors and dissuade others from coming forward. Women don’t need any more discouragement from reporting sexual assault and rape. Survivors already face disbelief from the justice system - this is why so few rapes are reported and even fewer rapists are convicted. The Prime Minister said two years ago that he believed victims but actions speak louder than words. The Prime Minister exonerated Mr Porter after a brief chat, but didn’t even read the 30 page dossier of allegations from the woman. Serious allegations have been made in circumstances in which a police investigation is no longer possible. Rather than simply dismissing the claims on the basis of Mr Porter’s assurance, the Prime Minister should initiate an inquiry to satisfy himself as to whether Mr Porter is suitable to hold a position in his Cabinet. Mr Porter must stand aside for the duration of an independent inquiry into these allegations. It is untenable for him to remain in the role and untenable for the Prime Minister not to order an independent inquiry. 1800 RESPECT : 1800 737 732 Lifeline (24 hour crisis line): 131 114 Beyond Blue: 1300 224 636 Image: ABC News

04.01.2022 With two major elections in the past week, it feels like Senate Estimates ended months ago, not last Thursday! Here's a few things we found out during the last fortnight in Canberra:

03.01.2022 Yet again, the ABC is here for Australians in a crisis! The good folk at ABC Education are offering free learning resources for all school ages. The first week... of TV Education has just kicked off live on ABC Me and later on ABC TV + iview Here's the schedule for the rest of this week: www.abc.net.au/tveducation
03.01.2022 The governments response to the pandemic has supercharged gender inequality. 55% of job losses resulting from the pandemic have been women. Women who r...etained their jobs have experienced a significantly bigger decrease in work hours compared to men. Women are particularly vulnerable to housing insecurity, and remain at greater risk of domestic and family violence. Join me and Adam Bandt tonight as we talk about how equality needs to be at the heart of our recovery plan, and also what the plan means for Queensland. Make sure to put any questions you have in the comments here, and come join in the conversation later tonight!
03.01.2022 Data released yesterday showed that only 12% of #CashlessDebitCard opt out applications have been processed; more than a third of them were rejected. It's been almost 12 months since this process started. It's not good enough.
02.01.2022 Here's how your Senators voted this week
02.01.2022 Its been a decade today since I was elected as Queenslands first Greens Senator - a wild and amazing and humbling role (15 odd months as an accidental Canadia...n aside). Ten whole years since Queenslanders sent a message to the establishment that we want a politics that puts people in the centre of decision making, not corporate profits or favours for donor mates! During that 2010 election campaign it felt like we were standing on a precipice and if we all worked hard enough we could make history and we did. Right across Australia the Greens doubled our Senate numbers and won our first lower house seat. Thanks to those wins we were able to form minority government and secure free Denticare for kids, the worlds strongest laws to tackle climate change and public funding to invest in clean, jobs-rich renewable energy projects. On a personal level, my amazing staff and I, with the might of all of our Queensland supporters, were able to achieve: a ban on using the Great Barrier Reef as a rubbish tip for dumping of capital dredge sludge reverse some of the worst funding cuts for frontline domestic violence services add protection for water from coal seam gas to our federal environmental laws pass a bill to establish a federal corruption watchdog (which the government is still delaying voting on in the House) AND I welcomed a second daughter who made history as the first baby to be breastfed in Australias federal parliament. I still have hope for a future federal government that works for people and the planet, and tackles inequality, the climate crisis and the rebuild from coronavirus it will take more Greens in there to achieve that. I have that same feeling now, in the lead up to the Queensland state election, as I did 10 years ago. We are on the edge of changing Queensland politics forever. With more Greens in state parliament, we can have 100% renewable energy, genuinely free public schools, build 100,000 public homes and make sure that mining companies, the big banks and property developers pay their fair share so that all Queenslanders have what we need to live a good life. If youve been thinking about what you can do to make a difference and ensure that we look after each other and our planet, this is your chance to get involved and ensure that in another 10 years we can look back and reflect on how much our movement has achieved. No matter where you are in this ancient country of ours, you can pitch in to help: greens.org.au/qld/volunteer
01.01.2022 Happy World Environment Day! Let's work together to build a future where our precious wildlife and landscapes can flourish, our oceans are healthy and our climate helps life thrive.
