23.01.2022 Calling all undergraduate researchers! ONLINE CONFERENCE FOR UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH IN AUSTRALIA: 'RISING TO THE CHALLENGE' Thursday, 17 and Friday, 18 September 2020... 21.01.2022 From the Head of the College of Law, Criminology & Justice, Prof Stephen Colbran: Dear students, prospective students, stakeholders, partners and the wider CQU community. We note with concern the government's recently announced proposed changes to funding, which would significantly increase the cost of undergraduate legal education. ... CQUniversity, as an Ashoka U Changemaker Campus, is committed to breaking down barriers to institutional change and fostering social innovation. This commitment aligns with CQUniversity’s strong focus on diversity and inclusiveness. Our newly formed College of Law, Criminology & Justice is deeply committed to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. The CQUniversity College of Law has a long tradition of inclusiveness and equity in access to legal education. We are proud to have been Australia’s pioneer in fully online legal education, opening up legal education to many remote and rural students, and students who otherwise cannot attend a campus. We strongly endorse the Statement released yesterday by the Council of Australian Law Deans on the government’s proposed changes. We agree that the significant increase in student fees is a serious risk to: access to legal education for [those students] who are socially and economically disadvantaged, who come from culturally diverse backgrounds, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians. Diversity is crucial for the development and operation of law. Diversity improves understanding of the operation of the rule of law and the legal justice system for those who have not traditionally had a voice. Increasing the cost of legal education increases the barriers for those who have the potential to enrich the legal profession and improve legal outcomes. It will narrow the range of representation within the profession. We call on the Government to accept CALD’s request, and enter talks with CALD to ensure any changes do not put at risk access to legal education and the role of legal education in the broader community. The full text of CALD’s Statement is here: https://cald.asn.au//cald-statement-on-the-australian-gov/ Prof Stephen Colbran, Head of the College of Law, Criminology & Justice, CQUniversity.

04.01.2022 UPDATE 24/8: The ODPP have let us know about some tweaks to the Summer 2020 in response to the ongoing COVID-19 situation. The most important change for right now is this: ‘Due to the current COVID-19 situation there will be limited placements for our Summer 2020 WEPP program. Therefore, preference may be given to Law students in the final stages of their course including PLT students.’ If this is going to affect you, my advice is to remember that while CQU might be new to th...e ODPP WEPP, it is not a new program, and there is no reason why it won’t continue in future years so there is always next year. COVID is creating all sorts of unexpected changes for all of us, and this is another one to add to the list. On the bright side, the ODPP have extended the closing date to Friday 4 September 2020, so you have a bit more time to get your application in. Keep them coming! -------------------------------------------------------------- Looking for hands-on experience of criminal law? Completed at least the first year of your law degree? Then we have great news! We’re pleased to announce that CQUniversity Law students can now apply for the Queensland Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Work Experience Placement Program (ODPP WEPP). Applications are now open for four-week, full time, unpaid placements with the ODPP this summer. Apply by visiting https://sites.google.com/cqulaw.net/odpp-wepp to access the placement information and schedule and download the Application Form. Make sure to follow the instructions and send your completed application to [email protected] by 11:59pm on Monday 31 August. We look forward to hearing from you!
