19.01.2022 With so much negative attention on insurance claims handling process of some insurers (no names mentioned), it’s good to occasionally be reminded why we went into risk advice in the first place. I think many of us in the life insurance sector have friends and relatives who wonder why we’re so fascinated with life insurance the different types of cover, the underwriting and claims processes, the medical definitions. I’ve got to admit, from the outside it can all seem a bit d...ry. But one of the great things about my job is being part of the stories that illustrate the value of good cover and, most importantly, the value of good advice in making a huge difference to people’s lives. We recently have been assisting a dear client, Jeff, who unfortunately has suffered serious health issues. In 2015, Jeff was diagnosed with a form of cancer that has basically required Jeff to have his stomach removed resulting a fight for life and long- term physical ongoing intensive rehabilitation. Now in his fifties, Jeff hasn’t worked since the diagnosis and is unlikely to ever work again and has also had to close his business. It’s an understatement to say that life has been pretty tough for both Jeff and his family. His spouse, Dee would have been the sole breadwinner if it wasn't for his TAL income protection which has been supplementing the monthly income needed to support the family and to meet their living expenses. Jeff and Dee no longer have a mortgage because they were able to use Jeff;s Zurich Total & Permanent Disability cover and also upgrade the family car. Needless to say, Jeff's decision to take my advice to have this valuable insurance in place has changed the lives of Jeff and his family in a profound way. The money has helped fund their living expenses and allowed Jeff to concentrate on looking after his health without the additional pressure of financial stress. Its an understatement to say that Jeff is fully appreciative of the work Craig Smith & Associates did in not just putting his cover in place but also for being there during the claims process to further alleviate the pressure. When it comes to life insurance, there really is no substitute for good advice. It’s not just about putting the right policies in place, it’s about reviewing the client’s needs and objectives, and having a full understanding of the product and any new product enhancements as they are announced. This is why clients need an adviser. There is a world of difference between properly underwritten policies with a reputable insurer and some of the direct policies and default policies available in employer superannuation. With so much media focus on the need for reforms of adviser remuneration and criticism of the claims handling processes of some insurers, it was nice to be reminded again why we all work in this industry and what a great job we often do in helping people when they need it most.
