23.01.2022 "I really enjoy making music, it helps me a lot with reading notes and playing them. I learnt that working together can give me courage!" Thanks to composer Nat Grant for such a fabulous project working with our Crashendo students. And to Creative Victoria for making it possible. We hope it's just the beginning. 19.01.2022 Local Spotlight: Crashendo Sistema Orchestra & Choir Crashendo! gives local students at Laverton P-12 College the opportunity to learn music, make connectio...ns and form skills. Crashendo! recently received a Creative Victoria Grant for an upcoming project 'Compositions in Crashendo!' The project will include student workshops, new music and mentoring from composer Nat Grant Music, original compositions from students, improvisation, and exploring extended techniques. A concert will be held in December showcasing students' works. We spoke to Director Erica Rasmussen (pictured) about Crashendo! Erica has been involved with the project for eight years. 1 How would you describe Crashendo! in two sentences? Crashendo! is a free after-school music program at Laverton P-12 College where students have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument and perform together in ensembles. Students learn to work together as a team and develop a strong sense of belonging, purpose and pride in achievement. 2 When did the project start? How did it come about? Crashendo! was established in 2011 as a partnership between Laverton P-12 College, Hobsons Bay City Council and Victoria Police Hobsons Bay. This partnership was brought about initially at the instigation of Senior Constable Sharon Radau, who was at the time Community Liaison Officer at Victoria Police Hobsons Bay. Sharon had seen a documentary about a music program called El Sistema in Venezuela and was struck by its power and potential. She wondered whether something similar might work in the western suburbs of Melbourne. 3 What is Crashendo!’s main objective? Why does it exist? Students in Laverton have few opportunities to engage in quality arts activities. Crashendo! fills this void. We provide stellar musical training to students and through their involvement in the program they develop skills in cooperation, focus, fine-motor control, coordination and self-discipline. They become tolerant, resilient, committed music-makers ready for a bright future. Students also have the opportunity to attend professional performances and perform regularly at school and in the community. Crashendo! particularly welcomes students who are culturally and linguistically diverse. A large percentage of the participants are of Karen background, refugees who have fled persecution in Thailand and Burma. 4 What has helped Crashendo! grow and flourish? Crashendo! students are gritty and determined. Crashendo! parents are supportive, proud and equally determined to do all they can to keep their child in the program. They know Crashendo! is unique in Laverton, places are limited and can provide their child with valuable skills and the possibility of a brighter future. Without the commitment of our parent community, Crashendo! would not exist. Our teaching artists are also very important. They are outstanding professional musicians who perform regularly in Australia and overseas, including with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria and other leading new music chamber ensembles in Melbourne and overseas. The teachers are keen to share their technical knowledge and experiences with students who have not had the same opportunity and support in their musical learning. As practising artists they also provide the Crashendo! students with insight into the professional music scene and what can be achieved with hard work and commitment. 5 How would you describe the benefits of the project for students? Students come together on a regular basis and learn to be creative, innovative and informed musicians and members of society. Social bonds, connectedness and a sense of identity are developed through making music together. Teachers at Laverton P-12 College regularly tell me of improved attendance at school, attention in class and more positive interactions amongst students who regularly attend the Crashendo! program. 11.01.2022 Listen to our Crashendo students performing some of the new compositions they created with the help of sound artist Nat Grant!

01.01.2022 Fabulous workshop at The Channel today! Kids got to create their own music using Ableton Live. Students worked in pairs to record their own drum beats, then mixed them with pre-recorded samples to make their own pieces. Thoroughly enjoyable workshop! It’s great to be back at The Channel after a few years, and also to continue our amazing year of student composition!
