24.01.2022 Celebrating this Winter Solstice by munching on sunflower seeds, picking stinging nettles for pesto and planting brassicas with the pooches. 23.01.2022 The warmth from the forge is so welcome in Winter, here in Mudgee it is already getting down to below 0. Blacksmithing is one of my hobbies that uses the basic elements of nature; air, fire, water and earth to create magical metal transformations, both useful and decorative. Picking up my my hammer and tongs again after a 5 year break, I got back into the swing of things in no time. I was very luck to meet my Blacksmithing Teacher, Wayland in Mudgee over 12 years ago, who g...radually taught me skills over many years at the forge that I will never forget. In this smithing session I created a black snake out of an old file and a decorative fire poker. #ironmaidenblacksmithing #firepokers #forgedinfire #blacksmiths #mudgeeregion #traditionalcrafts

23.01.2022 Swarming season is here With all the Patterson's Curse in flower, the Mudgee region is a sea of purple and the bees are having a field day. Here is a close up of one worker bee, to the left hand side of screen, from a swarm caught just an hour ago. She is waiving her abdomen in the air, fanning her wings. She is using her Nasconov glands (the white dot) on her bottom, a guidance scent that other bees follow to find the entrance of their new home and unite with their quee...n. Hives swarm naturally to multiply their colonies. The old queen leaves the hive with many of her loyal children with a belly full of honey. Bee keeping is a huge responsibility, trying to prevent swarming and keeping an eye out for diseases or signs of weakness. I am inspecting hives weekly this time of year, making sure the bees have room for brood and honey, this helps to prevent swarming. There is a great course at Tocal TAFE if you are interested in becoming an beekeeper or join your local bee group where you can get hands on experience. #beekeeping #swarmcatcher #urbanhoney

23.01.2022 Their back! Saffron Crocus were flowering in the market garden today, hidden by some tall weeds, glad I didnt miss this yearly treat. Will be checking every day until they are finished blooming, as you want to pick the flowers as they start to open.... 21.01.2022 An oldie but a goodie! Gladioli/Gladiolus is the perfect cut flower This one is bright red, with darker red flecks on the petals, zoom in for a closer look. ... Who else growing them? 21.01.2022 Delighted with the growth of the native tube stock which was planted just 8 months ago, with the help of some wonderful volunteers. This Acacia is now 1.5m tall, fixing nitrogen in the soil and providing quick growth to protect other plants. My plan is to plant out sections of at least 40 tubestocks each year to create a wildlife haven, sequester carbon and encourage greater biodiversity on the farm. ... #nativeplants #mudgeeregion #permaculturewomen #planttrees

20.01.2022 Repurposing Idea Using a free cage for a 1000L water pod, I now have an organised star picket storage area. The bent ones are kept to one side and straight ones opposite. ... Its very sturdy and keeps the star pickets off the ground. I will use a second cage for wooden garden stakes. What great repurposing ideas have you discovered? Include photos if you can

19.01.2022 Clay the camouflaged Koolie is standing guard on top of our treasured woodchip pile. These woodchips have been aged in the paddock for 1 year before being used in the market garden or to mulch around trees. Woodchips are a wonderful resource that promotes fungal growth, retains moisture in the soil, suppresses weeds and can be used to create pathways in the garden that can be used in wet weather.... #permaculture #gardenmulch #farmdogs #wastenotwantnot

18.01.2022 Stinging Nettles - Urtica urens Nettes are the most nutritious greens available, high in antioxidants and up to 40% protein. Extraordinarily dense in minerals especially calcium. NETTLE PESTO... Glove up to prevent getting stung by the fine hairs. Pick a 5L container of loosely packed young nettle tips. Wash, then blanch them in boiling water for 1 minute, this removes the sting, drain then squeeze out most of the liquid (save liquid as a super plant tonic). Roast 1 cup sunflower seeds. Add these to a food processor along with 1 tsp chopped garlic, 1/2 tsp salt and the juice of 2 lemons. Blend and drizzle in olive oil, approx 150ml until the conistancy is to your liking. Refrigerate and use over 10 days or freeze for use throughout the year. Delicious spread on sandwiches instead of butter. Devine on toast with poached eggs. I was lucky enough to have it with truffles and eggs this morning, both truffles and nettles grow this time of year, it was drool worthy! #weedforager #permaculturewomen #mudgeeregion #wildherbs #medicinalweeds #forager #nettlepesto

18.01.2022 Given the right conditions Oranges grow extremely well in Mudgee. This beauty provides me with many boxes of tasty Navel oranges at the end of Winter, every year without fail! My citrus orchard is planted in my chicken run, the orange tree provides shade and shelter for the chickens, the chickens provide manure and pest control for the orange, a win/win relationship. ... I have many fruit trees on my small suburban block, supplying me with delicious, nutrient dense, fresh food all throughout the year. If you are wanting to create a productive home garden, I would be more than happy to help you design one. #naveloranges #permaculturewomen #mudgeeregion #foodgardens

16.01.2022 Use old spice bottles to store seeds, they also make it easier to sow seeds like radish, coriander, mustard etc. You can mix smaller seeds, such as lettuce and carrot with sand, to get more even spacing. #repurpose #permaculture #seeds #gardeningaustralia

16.01.2022 Old bath + heat treated pallets = awesome worm farm + seat.

16.01.2022 Many plants can be propagated by placing cuttings in water. Great activity for the kids! Here I am striking Elder Flower cuttings on my windowsill. Take a piece of plant stock at least 10cm long cutting just below a node, strip the lower leaves off the cutting and make sure the bottom 1/3 approximately is sumberged in water, some cuttings like succulents only need to be touching the water. For more delicate cuttings, you can use alfoil to support the stem, just place alfoil... over jar and punch holes to place stems through. The water will need to be changed weekly and topped up as it evaporates, some cuttings can take 8 weeks to strike. My Grandmother used to propagate all of her African Violets in water, not all plants are suitable though. Succulents, wormwood, geranium, indoor climbers all seem to produce roots easily in water. What plants have you successfully propagated, using this method? #propagation #elderflower #permaculturewomen #homesteading

Making compost in-situ, no need to dig or spray weeds and able to plant into in 4 weeks. If you are wanting to join the volunteer crew, we meet on Fridays between 1 - 4pm, weekend sessions are on the cards. #permaculture #mudgeeregion #volunteers #lasagnegardening #easygrasscontrol

11.01.2022 A chilly -5 degrees in Mudgee this morning. Glad I gave my seedlings some protection with their own little hot house. By scattering the seeds over my garlic beds many lettuce start to appear, I gradually thin out plants to around 10cm apart. 07.01.2022 A fantastic example of Permaculture in practice and a great explanation of what it means.

07.01.2022 To grow Sweet Potatoes in cooler areas its a good idea to get them started indoors in late Winter. Store bought Sweet Potatoes are fine to use or you can buy from online stores. Place 3 toothpicks in top 1/3 of Sweet Potato so that 1/2 the tuber will sit in water. Place the jar on a window sill and wait. ... The Sweet Potato tubers will soon grow shoots, these slips can then be broken off when 15cm high and potted up. You will have many slips (shoots) to plant out into the garden once the weather warms up. #sweetpotato #gardenhacks #permaculturewomen #propagation

05.01.2022 Four generations from one family volunteering in the market garden today! We learnt all about functional mulching and how to control weeds effectively with minimal effort. We talked about uses for stinging nettles and munched on other edible weeds. Loved seeing the kids get involved, Aubrey and Landon set up their own little picnic, which was so adorable and enjoyed eating sunflower seeds straight from the flower. ... If you are interested in volunteering, we meet every Friday from around 1pm. Comment below if you are interested in other times/days. Thanks to Maddi, Megan, Nadine and Christine (couldnt forget that name) for volunteering today and I forgot to mention the wonderful Julie and Bettina from last week. #marketgarden #mudgeeregion #gardeningfriends #permaculture #kidsinthegarden

05.01.2022 Taking time to just be in the moment. My new ritual when at the market garden is to lie down in the grass and look up at the sky, taking in all the sounds and smells around me. Fern and Clay (dogs) usually settle down beside me, numerous birds fly overhead and I can hear the wind whisper through the seed heads of the grass.... Life is wonderful, simple and beautiful #simplelife #takingtime #beautifullife

05.01.2022 Bees and other beneficial insects, the soil, humans and animals, all benefit from these magnificent edible and medicinal plants.

04.01.2022 Today I am using cotton gloves to protect the first of the ripening figs. The gloves can be washed and re-used for several years then popped into the compost or worm farm. What do you use to protect your fruit from birds? #figseason #permaculture #backyardabundance

03.01.2022 The way to a better future, not back to normal!

03.01.2022 Mulching is the best way to combat those pesky weeds. Mulching also helps improve soil health by adding organic matter to the soil as it decomposes, it also reduces erosion and water evaporation by providing a protective layer. I didnt mulch this garlic patch straight after planting, as you can see many weeds have come in to cover the exposed ground, now I am trialing wet sheet newspaper with local barley straw.... The newspaper will smother and kill the weeds which will then hopefully feed the garlic. The garlic beds I did mulch, have minimal weed issues, which proves mulching works a treat. Woodchip makes wonderful paths in your garden, encouraging fungal growth and it acts like a sponge to hold water whilst allowing you to walk through your garden even in the wettest of weather. #mulchyourgarden #permaculture #easyfix #nodigweedcontrol #woodchip #freeresources

01.01.2022 Want to clean the glass on your wood burning fire? Use a damp piece of newspaper dipped into the ashes. It cleans better than any horrible synthetic chemical an...d its free. Keeping the glass clean improves performance; more radiant heat enters your room If you are installing one of these, check the emission rating. A well designed one will double burn, much like a rocket stove, and will produce almost no smoke. An inefficient one will pollute the air and all that particulate matter in the smoke is lost fuel and wasted energy. Energy is everything and everything is energy. #permaculture #permacoach #onemillionwomen #waronwasteau See more
