24.01.2022 Have you heard the news? National Developmental Educators Week is back on!! The DEAI is excited to be relaunching the 4th National Developmental Educato...rs Week. We invite you to join with the DEAI, fellow Developmental Educators, disability studies students, work colleagues, and other interested parties to celebrate the Developmental Educator profession from 7 - 11 December 2020. Our new dates fall on the same week that celebrates Human Rights Day. The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on 10 December in 1948. As such, Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December. The UDHR is one of UN’s major achievements as well as the first enunciation of human rights across the world. 23.01.2022 This year we are fortunate to be celebrating #NationalDEWeek2020 and Human Rights Day within the same week. Developmental Educators (DEs) work from a human rig...hts framework, which underpins our practice and service approaches. We adopt a holistic, strengths-based and person centred approach. Our goal is to empower people with disabilities to achieve social inclusion within the community and to maximise their quality of life through skills development. The United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights on 10 December in 1948. As such, Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December. The UDHR is one of UN’s major achievements as well as the first enunciation of human rights across the world. It is the most translated document around the globe available in over 500 languages. This year’s theme is ‘Recover Better - Stand Up for Human Rights’. Human rights protect everyone, including people with disability. The United Nations adopted the Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities (the UN Disability Convention/UNCRPD) in 2006 when it was recognised that people with disability are often overlooked in human rights discussions. Australia committed to protect and respect the rights in the Convention in 2008. The UN Disability Convention sets out how human rights and freedoms apply to people with disability, including the right to: have the same access as everyone else to the physical environment, transport, information and communications, and other facilities and services live independently and be included in the community equal opportunity and inclusion in education the highest attainable standard of health and access to health and rehabilitation services effective measures to ensure the equal right of people with disability to work, including support for reasonable adjustments to be made to the work environment an adequate standard of living, including access to housing and to assistance with disability expenses where necessary equal recognition before the law and access to justice respect for privacy and family relationships be free from cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment freedom of movement and personal mobility. DEAI members can access a range of Human Rights resources from the members page on the DEAI website www.deai.com.au/human-rights-resources Visit the UN’s website for more information on Human Rights Day 2020 and stay tuned for our Human Rights posts tomorrow! 21.01.2022 Welcome to Creating Precious Moments. CPM is now open for business. I can not be any happier than I am now to officially open CPM on 12/08/2020 while I am visiting Whyalla. ... Whyalla is the place my journey began. At the age of 13 yrs I was diagnosed with my 1st disability, Scoliosis. During my journey of travelling from Whyalla to the Flinders Medical Centre for countless examinations from specialists, x rays, cast fittings at Regency Park and wearing a brace 23 hrs a day I became determined to assist and support others who are living with disabilities. At 19 I began my career in Nursing, Special Education and the Disability Sector. I now begin another journey with CPM to achieve my goal of assisting others with "achieving life goals while celebrating life". Thank you everyone for your continue support and encouragement. Kind Regards Helena Hewish
