24.01.2022 VISUAL PROCESSING DISORDER symptoms that are known collectively as Irlen Syndrome involves much more than reading. Much of the early research was done on invest...igating the effect on reading and learning difficulties, but over time it has become a recognised cause of light-induced headaches and migraines, unexplained dizziness, nausea, depth perception issues and light-induced epilepsy. Many people who experience one or more of the symptoms of Visual Processing are musicians or are learning to play a musical instrument. Some of them cannot read the music as they play, because they experience visual distortions that may make the notes move, lines to be wavy, notes change places between the lines of the staves or have notes fade. If they have not had any reading difficulties, they do not even think about what might be causing these music difficulties because Irlen Syndrome is not anything that most of them have even heard of. So, if you experience difficulties like these or know someone else who does, consider that you or they may be experiencing difficulties with Visual Processing, resulting in the symptoms know as Irlen Syndrome. These symptoms are generally made worse when working with black print on white background and can often be removed by using a coloured paper background instead of white. Try photocopying the music onto coloured paper. The colour is important and not all colours will work for all people. It is necessary to "try out" different colours to determine which one is best in removing the distortions. 20.01.2022 HOW DO IRLEN SPECTRAL FILTERS HELP PEOPLE TO READ MORE EFFICIENTLY? These filters are worn as glasses or can be worn as contact lenses. They act by filtering ou...t those troublesome wavelengths of light that are present in the visible spectrum (that is, the rainbow of colours). The difference that they can make to the clarity of words on the page is constantly commented on by adults and children alike. Also, it is not only words that look better, it is also the environment for some people. A number of adults have told me that even looking at the clouds in the sky can be amazing, because they don't normally see the distinct outlines of each cloud.. rather they see them all blended together. The other thing that people don't expect is that, when looking through the darkest of the colours, they can still SEE COLOUR! So, wearing Irlen lenses does not make you feel like you are in a green world, or a pink world, or a blue world.. everything looks normal.. white looks white, pink looks pink, green looks green etc. So, while the lenses look coloured when we look at people with them on, when they look out from behind them, everything looks the same, except it is "softer" and has greater clarity. #irlensyndrome #irlenspectralfilters #cantseewordsclearly #readingishard #clarity for further information on Irlen Spectral Filters go to www.irlendyslexia.com

18.01.2022 Have you heard of Irlen Syndrome? Irlen Awareness Week is coming up soon. Irlen Syndrome is a reaction to a particular colour in the light spectrum and affects... 15% of the general population. By cutting out the offending light ray the brain is able to process the information received through the eye clearly, rectifying visual distortion and calming the brains activity. Symptoms include visual dyslexia, visual distortion, headaches, migraines, reading difficulties, travel sickness, clumsiness, fatigue, anxiety, poor spatial awareness, low self esteem, ADD and more. If you or a loved one are struggling with the above symptoms book your Irlen Screening today on www.dyslexiaservices.com.au #irlen #dyslexia #migraine #lightsensitivity #readingdifficulties or phone 03. 9439 9291

15.01.2022 VISUAL PROCESSING is involved in everything that we do, not just reading and writing.. it is also involved in judging distances, dealing with bright lights, in ...migraines and headaches as well as attention problems and in some cases, anxiety. Many of the symptoms associated with visual processing disorder are included in those that we recognise as Irlen Syndrome. These symptoms can be alleviated with the use of Spectral Filters worn as glasses or contacts. The symptoms are always there, but while wearing the Filters, they are alleviated or removed. It is a bit like wearing reading glasses for reading.. without them, it is hard to see the words clearly but while wearing our reading glasses, we can see the words clearly. In other words, without the Filters, the blurring words or distortions will always be there, but while wearing the Filters, those things are not present. #Irlenspectralfilters #Irlenlenses #visualprocessingdisorder #visualprocessing #readingisdifficult #wordsgoblurry #wordsdisappear #cantread For further information about the Visual Processing Disorder known as Irlen Syndrome go to www.irlendyslexia.com

14.01.2022 Not everybody learns in the same way. If somebody finds a way to improve how they can learn and function then lets welcome and acknowledge that. If wearing col...oured lenses brings clarity, concentration and contentment that is certainly worth celebrating! Irlen Syndrome is real. Keep advocating for its acceptance. See more
12.01.2022 Irlen Syndrome can also be called perceptual dyslexia. It is TOTALLY different to phonemic dyslexia where people struggle to put sounds to letters (phonemes) a...nd letters to sounds. This confusion is why we shouldnt just say somebody has dyslexia. People can have both. Do you know the signs of Irlen Syndrome (perceptual dyslexia)? See more

12.01.2022 HOW IS IT THAT WE CAN LOOK AT THE SAME THING, YET SEE SOMETHING DIFFERENT? This is what happens for some children and adults when they look at black print on a ... white page. NOTICE that I included ADULTS in my information. Critics of irlen syndrome tend to focus on children having problems, whereas, in reality there are just as many adults who experience the same symptoms as children. THEY HAVE JUST LEARNED TO "LIVE WITH IT". The reason for the differences seen by one person compared to another is a difference in their VISUAL PROCESSING of what they are looking at. It is not an eye problem.. it has nothing to do with how their eyes are working. It is to do with how their brain is working. IT IS NOT AN INTELLIGENCE PROBLEM. It does not always cause problems with reading: there may be issues of DEPTH PERCEPTION; MIGRAINES; HEADACHES; COMPREHENSION DIFFICULTIES; CONCENTRATION DIFFICULTIES; MAINTAINING FOCUS ON TASKS IS DIFFICULT; PRINT MAY DISAPPEAR; WORDS MAY MOVE ON THE PAGE; EYES MAY WATER WHEN READING; GOING TO SLEEP WHEN READING; GETTING "ANTSY" UNDER FLUORESCENT LIGHTS; FEELING OVERWHELMED IN BRIGHTLY LIT ENVIRONMENTS; and in some cases becoming IRRITABLE and AGGRESSIVE under brightly lit environments. All of these listed above are indicators of POOR VISUAL PROCESSING. There are no actual treatments available, but Irlen lenses (spectral filters) actually improve visual processing and remove these difficulties while ever they are worn. In other words, they act like optometric lenses that remove the difficulties of short sightedness, long sightedness and any other eyesight problems. Irlen lenses should be seen as AIDS just like optometric lenses. In the photo accompanying this post, the person on the right has poor visual processing causing letters etc. to look jumbled. When that person puts on their specifically tinted Irlen lenses, their brain will "see" the letters as they are seen by the person on the left. They are not magic... they simply correct poor visual processing. 12.01.2022 Do you or your child already wear Irlen Lenses? Did you know the lenses can gradually fade over time reducing their effectiveness? Did you know that as children... grow and their school demands change then their tint needs to be checked to ensure it remains optimal? If it is over 12 months since your child has had their lens colour checked then now is the time to make an appointment for a recheck to ensure they have the best tint for the school year ahead. 09.01.2022 RESEARCH SHOWS THAT VISUAL PROCESSING IS INVOLVED IN MIGRAINES WITH AND WITHOUT AURAS AS WELL AS VISUAL SNOW THAT IS EXPERIENCED BY MANY PEOPLE WITH IRLEN SYNDR...OME. Irlen Spectral Filters prevent light-induced migraines AND we know that migraines are one of the symptoms known to be the result of a visual processing disorder. So, in many ways, this paper helps to explain HOW these Irlen lenses prevent the migraines. That is, they are preventing the specific visual processing problems in those people who are sensitive to the light. This is a very recent paper (December 2019) published on line in the journal "Frontiers in Neurology". The link is below.. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6923266/ While they are not looking at Irlen Syndrome as such, because we know that many people with Irlen suffer from light-induced migraines, AND we know that their Irlen Spectral Filters prevent those migraines, AND we know that Irlen Syndrome is the result of a Visual processing disorder, it provides a strong foundation for further research in this field, using Irlen Spectral Filters to see if they modify the Visual Processing problems identified in causing these migraines and visual snow. #visualsnow #visualprocessing #visualprocessingdisorder #lightinducedmigraines #irlensyndrome #research for further information on Irlen Syndrome, or to do a self-test to see if your migraines or headaches could be the result of a visual processing disorder, go to www.irlendyslexia.com

04.01.2022 WE WRITE WHAT WE SEE Misshapen letters. Reversals. Irregular letter sizes. Capital letters mixed in with lowercase ones. Writing above the line. Writing be...low the line. Writing downhill. Missing punctuation. Wobbly writing. Unequal spacing between words. No space between words. At first, it may be developmental. Later, however, it may be an indicator of Irlen Syndrome, a perceptual processing disorder. If your child has issues with writing, seek out an Irlen specialist for an Irlen screening. You may find part of the answer for difficulties in penmanship and writing. We write what we see. If print is not stable or the white background behind the letters is causing distortions, what we see will be distorted, too. Therefore, when we write, it appears distorted. This may be labeled or diagnosed as disgraphia. That label may not be correct. The proper COLOR needed by one's brain, will allow for print and background to be stable and not distorted. With print visually stable, what we see will be clear. Therefore, when we write what we see, our penmanship may truly be legible.
03.01.2022 We know kids are home from school and are being forced into a lot more screen time than they are used to, thanks to the valiant efforts of our nations schools t...o keep our kids learning during this difficult time of social distancing. Extra time reading off screens can be particularly difficult for kids with Irlen Syndrome. Check out some of our suggestions for easing the discomfort and challenges extra screen time can cause: 1. Dim it down: Go to the appearance settings on your computer and dim down the screen. 2. ColorVeil digital overlay: ColoVeil offers a free digital colored overlay download for Windows-based PCs. Download the software, set your color, and enjoy a more comfortable screen experience. 3. Irlen Colored Overlays and Clings: Irlen Clings and Colored Overlays can be used right on your computer screen to improve reading difficulties and discomfort. 4. Take breaks: Staring at a screen for hours on end isn't good for anyone (Irlen Syndrome or not), so make sure you take time away from your screen for at least a minute every 20-30 minutes. 5. Control lighting and avoid glare from windows: Take advantage of being at home by taking control of your lighting environment. Turn off overhead lights, in favor of a table or floor lamp. Avoid working on your computer near a window, since this can cause extra glare on your screen. Stay safe and healthy!
