15.01.2022 Let me introduce myself. I am a member of the Tuam PLU DNA Facebook page. I live in Clunes Victoria, and work in Ballarat weekdays. One of the Admins (Martin Cu...rley - Soghain Genes) has asked I pass these links to your societies - Ballarat, Maryborough and Bendigo. The Tuam PLU (stands for Poor Law Union) Group are seeking contact with descendants of any of these girls listed in the attached articles. They came to Victoria on the ship Lady Kennaway 1848. Attached are articles should you wish to print as a flyer, print in one of your journals, or place on your notice board. One of the girls - Cathy Culbert - eventually settled in the Maryborough area with her husband William Swain (or Swane). She was buried in Maryborough Cemetery in 1899 with other family members. They are particularly interested in making contact with any of her descendants still remaining in this region. Many thanks Pam Soghain Genes 19 April at 22:02 List of the girls who were given passage to Australia in 1848 from Tuam Poor Law Union on board the Lady Kennaway True to form the girls were reported as having 'conducted themselves with great proprierty during the voyage and speedily obtained situations in the Colony with good wages, and that their subsequent conduct has been spoken of in satisfactory terms ' Are you a descendant ? If so please join the Tuam PLU group and post your info If you have an Ancestry test done hopefully we can link you to relatives in the area https://www.facebook.com/groups/309867099437412/ Some other sites of interest in relation to this voyage are Facebook - Exploring Irish Roots Enterprise and Soghain Genes https://earlgreysfamineorphans.wordpress.com//lady-kenna/

08.01.2022 McCALLUM’S CREEK BRIDGE COLLAPSE. DUNACH (VIC) 1909 Dunach is in western Victoria, between Clunes and Talbot on the Ballarat/Maryborough rail line. Flood ...waters had undermined one of the bridge piers when on August 19 1909, it collapsed under the weight of the Maryborough-bound night train, a ’mixed’ train from Ballarat. Remarkably... there were no fatalities and only one female passenger was injured. Two additional shots below... (Photos: Public Records Office Victoria)

07.01.2022 Happy New Year to everyone. The Historical Society are once again one of the local groups involved in the organisation of the Creswick Australia Day Breakfast. This takes place at the Park Lake Rotunda from 8am on January 26th and is a free event. The Hepburn Shire provide the food - sausages, bacon, eggs, cereals, fruit, toast, tea, coffee and juice. If you would like to come along you need to get tickets from either the Hub in Creswick or the Visitor Information Centre. ... This is to enable us to estimate how many people we need to cater for. Local Achievers will be acknowledged and if you know of anyone who deserves to be recognised then please contact Pat Tacey, Lions Club. Advertising notices will be placed around town as well as in the January edition of the Creswick District News. NOTE IF A CATASTROPHIC FIRE DAY IS DECLARED FOR THAT DAY THE EVENT WILL BE CANCELLED. 06.01.2022 A great great grandfather of mine, Charles Thom(p)son was apparently recruited in Creswick late 1863/64 for the 4th Waikato Regiment and left for NZ in 1864. Do...es anyone know of such recruitments in Creswick at that time. He was probably with his wife Margaret and possibly was in the area because of the gold rush See more

05.01.2022 2020 DREEITE REUNION DELAYED BUT YOU CAN HELP This year there was supposed to be a reunion of people who grew up on the Dreeite Soldier Settlement - created aft...er the First World War for returned servicemen. Ray, who grew up in the area, and a representative from the Colac Otway Shire and a small committee, were working on a weekend program for the reunion, which would have been held this year in September. Unfortunately it was not able to go ahead, but on the positive side, that has allowed time for some detailed research into all of the men and their families who took up the offer of these small farm-lets. One of our volunteers, Lynette, has used a variety of resources to identify these people and will use the next twelve months to gather as much information as possible for the delayed reunion. You can help by sharing this post with anyone you think might be connected to the Dreeite Soldier Settlement or by contacting us with stories, photographs, anecdotes etc. - anything that will add to this project. If you are able to help, please email: [email protected] This is a map of the area where the soldier settler farms were situated. See more

03.01.2022 Hello Good People, I am hoping to find photos relating to the time my GGGrandfather, Thomas Spinks, who lived at Werona. The house still stands today as a testament to his skill. In my search for information regarding any of your ancestors who were in and around Werona district in 1870 - 1900. Specifically the family names of Robinson, Longmire and Spinks. However I am particularly interested in old photos which may have been taken in the area. Of great interest was a wedding between a William Robinson of Werona and a MissTaylor of England at the home of the Longmire's which is shown in the photo attached. ( when it was previously owned by the Spinks family ) From Howard Jd
