24.01.2022 Today we remember the Viannos Holocaust, a mass extermination campaign launched by Nazi forces against the civilian residents of around 20 villages located in the areas of east Viannos and west Ierapetra provinces on the Greek island of Crete during World War II. They took place between September 14-16, 1943.In total, more than 500 civilians were executed, and nearly twenty villages were looted and burned to the ground. All agricultural crops growing in the fields, as well... as the harvest which had already been brought in for the year, was destroyed by the Wehrmacht soldiers. This massacre was later called the Viannos Holocaust, and was one of the deadliest massacres during the long years of Axis occupation of Greece, second only to the Massacre of Kalavryta. This post was influenced by @greekreporter and their article of the respective topic.

24.01.2022 Today on the 27th of August we celebrate St Fanourios. A Saint who many are starting to learn about from his miracles and famous fanouropita that is made in honour of him. Each year on the eve of August the 27th, it is custom by Greek Orthodox faithful to bake a lenten cake in the honour of St Fanourios. The cake is then taken to church to be blessed in the morning. The name Fanourios means revealer. He is therefore known as the Saint for lost things. It is believed he can he...lp you find what you are looking for, it could be a lost object, an emotional journey, health, a future spouse, or even a new meaning to life. In his icon, it is seen that he is holding a candle which symbolises the light of finding lost things. A simple moist lenten cake, flavoured with cinnamon, orange, vanilla, and walnuts. It is either made with seven or nine ingredients symbolising the mysteries of our church. Below is a recipe for the Fanouropita. May guide you and grant you with great health. See more

22.01.2022 As we all know today is RUOK day and with this brings us a good opportunity to reflect on not only our own emotional and mental state but consider what our loved ones and friends may be going through. Its without saying that its been hard for all of us but small acts of kindness can make the biggest difference. What to say after R U OK can be easily broken down into: 1. Ask ... 2. Listen 3. Encourage to take action/ find support 4. Check-in Remember RUOK is a conversation and takes two to tango, so before getting ready to ask, ask yourself: 1. Am I ready? - Am I willing to genuinely listen - Can I give as much time as needed 2. Am I prepared? - Do I understand that if I ask someones answer could be "No, Im not"? - Do I accept that they might not be ready to talk? Or they might not want to talk to me? 3. Picked my moment? - Have I chosen somewhere relatively private and comfy? - Have I figured out a time that will be good for them to chat? Above all else, we are a community page and a community is stronger when we stay connected Interested to find out more? Visit the R U OK website @ https://www.ruok.org.au/

20.01.2022 A massive Happy Easter to all of our friends and family We hope you enjoy this special day filled with food, love & happiness.

20.01.2022 () We hope youre all doing well during these difficult times. Wed like to share with you a famous delicious Cretan dessert that many cant resist, yes Kalitsounia. Make sure you send us through some photos of your creation. Extremely soft and highly addictive! These delicious little cheese pastries are a delicacy from the island of Crete, but nowadays they are eaten almost everywhere throughout the year at times of celebration.... Kalitsounia are traditionally made with the fresh soft variety of mizithra. Serve as a delicious dessert with a drizzle of warm honey and a sprinkle of powder cinnamon. Enjoy! 1 cup olive oil 1 cup strained yogurt 1egg 1 1/2 cup of sugar 1kg flour (35 ounces) 4 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional) juice of 1/2 orange zest of 1 lemon (optional) For the filling 1kg of fresh soft myzithra cheese or mascarpone or ricotta (35 ounces) 1 cup of sugar 1 eggs and 1 egg white 1 tsp powdered cinnamon For the topping 2eggs 1 tbsp water 1 tbsp powdered cinnamon 1. To prepare the dough for the cheese pastries (kalitsounia), add into a large bowl the olive oil, sugar, yogurt, and eggs; blend well, using your hands, until the ingredients combine. Pour in the orange juice, the lemon zest, and vanilla extract and blend again. Sieve the flour with the baking powder and add gradually to the mixture. Knead the dough with your hands, until it softens. Depending on the flour, you may need to use a little bit less or more flour than the recipe calls for. The dough should be soft, but not sticky. 2. Leave the dough to rest for about 30 minutes. 3. In the meantime, prepare the filling for the kalitsounia. Mash the cheese into a large bowl, add the sugar, the eggs, and the cinnamon; blend well, until the ingredients combine. 4. Place the dough on a floured surface. Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough to a thickness of about 0.3 cm. Using a 10cm cutter, cut out some circles. (If you find it difficult to roll out the whole dough, cut it in half and roll out each half separately.) 5. Add a spoonful of the cheese mixture in the centre of each dough circle and spread. Raise the rim of the dough up around the cheese and using your fingers, pinch the edges to pull the dough in around the cheese, leaving the centre open, as shown in the picture. 6. Preheat the oven to 180-200C. Place the cheese pastries (kalitsounia) on a large baking tray, lined with parchment paper, and leave to rest for 20 minutes. Into a bowl, whisk 1-2 eggs and 1 tbsp of water and brush the pastries. Sprinkle with cinnamon powder and bake for about 25 minutes, until golden. 7. Serve the kalitsounia as a delicious dessert with a drizzle of honey. Enjoy!

19.01.2022 Palm Sunday ( ) We hope you are all staying safe with your loved ones in this difficult time. Today we celebrate Palm Sunday, which commemorates Jesus triumphal entry into Jerusalem, according to Christian belief. It marks the beginning of Holy Week and always falls on the Sunday before Easter Sunday.... The Sunday before Easter is called Palm Sunday because the crowds waved palm branches as they followed Jesus procession into Jerusalem. It was the time of the Jewish feast of Passover. Many Jews travelled to Jerusalem to celebrate this feast together. Palm Sunday is a Christian moveable feast that falls on the Sunday before Easter. Today Christians all over the world will be carrying palms and other branches a celebration of the day Jesus entered Jerusalem before he was crucified and then resurrected, according to the Christian faith. It was adopted into Christian iconography to represent the victory of martyrs, or the victory of the spirit over the flesh. #palmsunday #greekeaster

18.01.2022 The battle of Crete was fought during the Second World War on the Greek island of Crete. It began on the morning of 20 May 1941, when Nazi Germany began an airborne invasion of Crete. Greek and other Allied forces, along with Cretan civilians, defended the island. For 12 dramatic days ANZAC soldiers and Greek troops, assisted by Cretan civilians, tried to repel a huge airborne assault by the Germans. The Battle for Crete was one of the most dramatic battles of the Second Wor...ld War. For 12 dramatic days a mixed force of New Zealanders, British, Australian and Greek troops desperately tried to fight off a huge German airborne assault. Many children women and elderly within those numbers as well as many men. Women and children defended what they could armed with the village guns as the men were away fighting off the German Nazis. This tragic event has left a scar in modern day Crete. Today, each year we commemorate and remember those who risked their lives, fought and defended Crete and all of Greece. Every year the Cretan Federation of Australian and New Zealand partakes at the shrine of remembrance in memorial of those who risked their lives. Lest we forget See more

16.01.2022 Good Friday / Holy Friday is celebrated by fasting and is considered a day of mourning. On this day, in the Greek Orthodox Church the story of Jesus journey to the Cross and death, his burial and the triumph of evil over good is commemorated.... On Holy Friday, five Gospels are read which tell the tale of the tragic events that occurred from the Evangelists point of view. In the early hours of Holy Friday, believers gather to pray the Royal Hours, which is a special expanded celebration of the Little Hours; while at 3 pm people gather for the Vespers of the Taking Down from the Cross. Near the end of the service, an Epitaph, or a cloth embroidered with the image of Christ prepared for burial, is carried in procession to a low table in the nave which represents the Tomb of Christ, followed by the procession. Jesus Christ said If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you... Remember the word that I said to you, A servant is not greater than his master. If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you." John 15: 18-20. We wish everyone health & happiness this week !

12.01.2022 Modern Greek has been taught at La Trobe University for 38 years. La Trobe is the only Victorian university that offers a Modern Greek Studies program. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, La Trobe University has decided to discontinue this unique program. It would be a shame if La Trobe decided to disregard the wealth of knowledge that the Greek program has to offer. La Trobe University is taking steps to diminish the role that language has to play in its students’ past, present and future. In the diaspora our language is under threat, and we, Greeks of the diaspora, urge you to sign this petition in solidarity to save the Greek language at La Trobe University. We need to do what we can to keep our native tongue active.

08.01.2022 Today on the 15th of August we celebrate The Dormition of the Theotokos ( ). 15th of August marks a big celebration in our calendar. It is seen as a second Easter. The Dormition of the Mother of God (Greek: ) is a Great Feast of the Eastern Orthodox Church, which commemorates the "falling asleep" or death of Mary the Theotokos ("Mother of God", literally translated as God-bearer), and her bodily resurrection before being taken up into ...heaven. This holy day consists of 15 days of fasting starting from the 1st of August right up until the 15th. Every region of Greece celebrates this day with panigiria and glendia especially in Crete. Even in the most rural of villages there will be some sort of celebration. In Rethymno, Crete, the small church of Panagia Xarakiani ( ) annually holds a procession on the streets with the icon of panagia with thousands of faithful attending. Straight after, the festivities begin with plenty of food and dancing right up until the early hours of the next day. Stay tuned for the up coming posts of the celebrations. Happy name day to all celebrating their name today. , , . .

07.01.2022 Usually, this past weekend would see the wonderful wine festival of Rethymnon take place. It attracts tourists who want to experience Cretan fine wine. The festival is a weekend long experience and is scouted by many critics. Mark this down in your bucket lists of Crete. You sure dont want to miss this when we can travel overseas again. Cheers to the future

04.01.2022 Today, the Greek community mourns for the provocative theft of Agia Sofia. Listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, Erdogan has decreed Agia Sofias (Hagia Sofia) conversion to a Mosque. This is a sad day for all Greeks and Christians. Ironically, it happens on the anniversary of St Paisios passing. Many of his prophesies have come to light and his great prophecy of Constantinople states that the city and church will return back to the hands of its rightful owners, us Greeks.

04.01.2022 The Battle of Crete Memorial Service pays tribute to the events that began on the 20th of May 1941, where the Nazi German regime began an airborne invasion in Crete, Greece. # # # #

02.01.2022 In the same way that there are Christian buildings in Constantinople, so too are there Muslim buildings in Greece, in particular Crete which is home to many remnants of the Ottoman period. In Xania, architecture from Byzantine, Venetian and Ottoman buildings coexists in the landscape of the city. As far as Islamic architecture is concerned, one of the more significant examples is the Mosque of the Janissaries ( ), located in the old Venetian Harbor, erected in 1645 ...when the Ottomans captured Xania. Paralleling the Hagia Sophia, the Mosque was built on the grounds of a former church. The building stopped functioning as a religious building in 1923 and since then it has been used as a caf, restaurant and a tourist office. More recently however it has been used as a space dedicated to art exhibitions. This shows the ways in which old buildings can be repurposed, where the original pious meaning is frozen but not lost or annulled. See more
