07.01.2022 Most of you know the history: A decades long push for a new Cricket facility to enable the Kingborough/Huon regions to thrive and grow in the highest level of competition in the state was a major driver to the construction of the Twin Ovals complex in the Kingborough sporting precinct. Funding for this new facility was provided by the Federal Government, State Government and the Kingborough Council. The original concept was for a Cricket Ground as the East oval and a 'multi p...urpose' ground on the West oval, predominately for use as an AFL football or Soccer ground. The state of play now: The need for an additional turf cricket wicket in the municipality has been identified by Kingborough District Cricket Club, along with Cricket Tasmania and Kingborough Council. Therefore, solutions have been sought, even including calls for a third oval to be built to accommodate this. The Kingborough Council, in the best interests of the community, appear to have intelligently determined that the best course of action is to further utilise one of the best surfaces in the state by installing a new turf wicket on the West oval. Kingborough Council will invest in the facility to ensure that it is able to be fully utilised by the Kingborough Community year round. 1) The community will be able to use the facility more regularly, no longer interupted by "mickey mouse" AFL pre-season fixtures. 2) The installation of an additional Turf wicket will bring the two major tennants closes together, enabling them to futher build on their successful working relationship and bring more sporting opportunities to the growing community. 3) Community members participating in sports of all codes will have access to use this magnificent facility year round. 4) Kingborough Council ground staff will continue their excellent work at the venue to ensure that the facility is available for training and matches, regardless of conditions. You can't make an omelette without cracking a few eggs! Once this turf wicket is installed, the jewel in the crown of sporting facilities will be further improved, the opportunity of thousands of Kingborough and Huon residents to either watch or participate in high level sport at an elite venue in the region will also be increased.
