25.01.2022 When the Port of Townsville first started trading in 1864, the modern concept of sustainability was unknown. Today, it has become so important that the theme ...of World Maritime Day on 24 September 2020 is Sustainable shipping for a sustainable planet. Sponsored by the International Maritime Organization, under the aegis of the United Nations, it highlights goals such as reducing greenhouse gas emissions, developing cleaner fuel oil, reducing marine litter, and improving efficiency through the electronic exchange of information. It’s a huge challenge for the Port and all those organisations involved with shipping. In days past, the two-story timber building that sits at the centre of the Maritime Museum of Townsville had a front-row seat on all the port action. It is, in fact, the former Pier Master’s Office. It dates from 1931 and was sited between Berths 4 and 5 at the port. From there the pier master controlled all incoming and outgoing ship movement. What sights this building must have seen as the port expanded and welcomed vessels from all over the globe! The Maritime Museum was founded on the upper floor of the building in 1986 and grew quickly. The pier master already having moved to newer, larger quarters, the refurbished wood structure was trucked in 1992 to its own larger site on Ross Creek. Renamed the Port Building, it now houses the Yongala Gallery and our administrative office. As a repurposed structure listed on the Local Heritage Register, it embodies both the history of the Port and the Museum’s sustainability goals of today. And it still has a great view of the waterfront, overlooking the berths of the Townsville Yacht Club and the coming and going of many beautiful boats. For more information, visit https://www.tmml.org.au/ Then come to 42-68 Palmer St. in South Townsville and catch some of the action yourself.

23.01.2022 #FlashbackFriday Today's local history photograph taken by Alex Trotter takes us back to October 1967 and shows the start of construction of the Outpatients wi...ng at the Townsville General Hospital in Eyre Street, North Ward. Does anyone remember waiting in the circular open-air waiting area for outpatients before this building was erected? You can just see that area in the photo at the end of A Block near the maternity building.

22.01.2022 THROWBACK THURSDAY thanks to CityLibraries Townsville This great photograph of Flinders Street near Cattana's Lowths Hotel, dated circa 1930, has captured one... of the motorised buses of the era. You can see the passenger area with the sides of the bus open to the dust and rain, but at least you would get a breeze! And if the bus was full, you could ride on the running board, as this young person did! If you look closely at the right of the photo you will see that the block on the corner is vacant. The A.M.P. building would be built on that corner in 1936. Check back with us next week and we'll have a look at the buses of the 1940s. Want to see more pictures? 20.01.2022 THROWBACK THURSDAY thanks to CityLibraries Townsville Today’s photograph from our Local History Collection features horsedrawn buses from the Hermit Park Bus ...Company at a bus stop near the Post Office in Flinders Street. There is no date on the photo, but it would appear to be the early 1900’s when Ernest Carne was the proprietor of the company. The lady with her back to the camera appears to be wearing the uniform of the Townsville Ladies Rowing Club. The first recording of a bus timetable in our collection is dated 1889 with three runs operating daily between Rising Sun Hotel, Hermit Park Hotel, the Wharf, the Grammar School and the Newmarket Hotel. 1890 saw this expanded to eight runs operating between 7.20am and 7.15pm and by 1905 the services had been extended to Mundingburra and Pimlico. 16.01.2022 Researchers from JCU: James Cook University, Australia’s TropWATER are currently conducting Seagrass Surveys in Townsville. The team has been monitoring seagras...s in Cleveland Bay annually since 2007 and stepped it up to twice-yearly surveys last year as part of the marine monitoring for our Channel Upgrade project. The seagrass surveys are undertaken from helicopter at low tide (pictured) for intertidal seagrass meadows and by boat for subtidal and deep water seagrass meadows. The research team looks at multiple factors including the biomass, spatial footprint and number of seagrass species present. Stay tuned for our annual Townsville Seagrass Report which will be released later this year, once the research team has completed their surveys and crunched the numbers.
15.01.2022 #FlashbackFriday Ok, put your hand up if you remember these! This photograph was taken by Alex Trotter in 1969 and features the red and yellow West End bus and... the blue and grey Hermit Park bus. The Hermit Park buses always seemed to be newer and more comfortable. The Hermit Park Bus Company was purchased by Sunbus in 2010, but can anyone remember what happened to the West End Bus Company?
