25.01.2022 If you're looking for a nice overview of what Critical Mass is all about, check out this write-up in Books+Publishing. We're looking to help authors, publishers and other businesses make better publishing decisions and access the services that they need to succeed.

24.01.2022 As a proportion of income, at least.

23.01.2022 This is a pretty good system, so long as you allow for the occasional outlier. (via @aidan_doyle)

23.01.2022 Great opportunity to help editors find out how writers' use their services.

22.01.2022 "The more you shy away from the material, the worse it gets. You're better off pushing through and ending up with 30 dead pages you can correct later than just sitting there with nothing."

22.01.2022 There's a new job going @writingnsw. Check it out and send an application through if you think it might be for you.

21.01.2022 You're welcome!

21.01.2022 Fascinating, terrifying reading. And not a bad writing prompt for SF writers too.

19.01.2022 Great to see audio coming up with original content. Some of these look excellent.

18.01.2022 Looking forward to the opportunity to try something new! I'll be continuing to work on Critical Mass on the side for existing clients, but will be taking a break from new clients until I have an idea of my workload.

18.01.2022 It's easy to detect no 3 as it's often written on a note stuck to the fridge.

16.01.2022 If you self publish and it doesn’t sell it probably doesn’t have a market. If you self publish and it does sell moderately that might be all the market you have. Sell 100k copies? You’ve saturated the market.

14.01.2022 Utterly brilliant and hilariously nerdy. I love this piece so much. Thanks for sharing @emmaraff.

10.01.2022 A great weekend at the Capricorn Coast for their first writers' festival! Thoroughly enjoyed getting to know my fellow guests as well as the attendees. If you're in the area and get the chance to go to the next one you should grab the opportunity.

06.01.2022 A tale as old as time ... (via @wintherweaver)

06.01.2022 And this is why it's risky to put all your eggs in one rainforest-shaped basket, you guys.

04.01.2022 Nurses, doctors, teachers, refuse collectors all work and get paid for it. Authors and illustrators work and are called elitist for wanting the same to be paid, former children’s laureate Malorie Blackman tweeted. Giving our work away for free means no money to pay our bills, live or write/draw. It’s not a hobby, it’s my job. Gobsmacking.

03.01.2022 "It would be an exaggeration to say this is all the brain does, but it’s a pretty general algorithm. Take language processing. I’m going to the restaurant to get a bite to ___. Luke, I am your ___. You probably auto-filled both of those before your conscious thought had even realized there was a question. More complicated examples, like I have a little ___ will bring up a probability distribution giving high weights to solutions like sister or problem, and lower weights to other words that don’t fit the pattern. This system usually works very well. That’s why when you possible asymptote dinosaur phrenoscope lability, you get a sudden case of mental vertigo as your prediction algorithms stutter, fail, and call on higher level functions to perform complicated context-shifting operations until the universe makes sense again."

03.01.2022 I can't remember who originally shared this, so I apologise for ripping you off. But it's brilliant.

02.01.2022 How long until we get convincing self-published novels spamming KDP?

01.01.2022 Excellent. (via The language nerds.)

01.01.2022 I had the great privilege to meet Bruce Pascoe through work the other day and he was amazing, and Dark Emu itself is brilliant and shattering. Check it out here: https://buff.ly/2YNNsyC and the young readers' edition here: https://buff.ly/2Xc1ObG.
