11.01.2022 The importance of nutrition during your pregnancy is more important than some might think. Pregnancy weight gain is normal and something not to stress about too much unless you have been told to watch the gain by your health professional. Nutrition can assist with many aspects of pregnancy, such as, with morning sickness, gestational diabetes, iron deficiency, heartburn and constipation. Some of the methods that can assist with morning sickness is eating small amounts ofte...n, staying hydrated, avoiding fatty or spicy foods and eating dry crackers before getting up in the morning. Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy. Remaining physically active and maintaining a healthy diet throughout pregnancy can reduce the risk of developing it by a very significant 27%. Nutrition can help to prevent, delay and manage any need for insulin. Iron deficiency is common for females in general but very common among pregnant women. It is important to maintain iron levels during pregnancy for overall energy levels, to support the health of the growing baby and to promote postbirth recovery and lactation. Increasing iron stores naturally through diet by consuming foods containing both haem iron (animal/meat-based) and non-haem iron (plantbased). Iron supplementation can help regulate iron levels. Vitamin C assists with the absorption of iron, so if clients require an iron supplement, one with added vitamin C is the best option. Heartburn is also common during pregnancy. Symptoms may be reduced by eating small amounts and often, remaining upright after meals, drinking plenty of fluids between meals, avoiding meals late in the evening, avoiding fatty or spicy foods, consuming dairy products and avoiding excess consumption of caffeine. Constipation can occur at any stage of pregnancy. To avoid constipation, aim to eat foods high in fibre, drink plenty of water, and participate in regular physical activity. It is important to manage and avoid constipation and straining of the bowel movements during pregnancy to reduce the load and potential damage to the pelvic floor as well as risk of haemorrhoids. 09.01.2022 The Pike Push-up looks like a mash-up of Downward-Facing Dog and Dolphin Pose, and this move can build major strength. Use it as a stepping stone to harder moves such as handstand push-ups or as a goal to boost your shoulder strength. The trick is to make sure you maintain proper form to keep your shoulders healthy and to avoid face-planting! Heres how to do the perfect pike push-up, step by step! 1. Start in a plank position on the floor, with hands firmly on the floor, r...ight under your shoulders. Press toes firmly into the floor too. 2. Keep core tight and back flat and engage your glutes and hamstrings. Your whole body should be neutral and in a straight line. 3. Lift hips up and back until your body forms an inverted V shape. Keep arms and legs as straight as possible. 5. Start to bend elbows, and then lower your entire upper body toward the floor. Reaching your head forward of your hands. 6. Stay there for a moment, then slowly push back up until your arms are straight and youre in the inverted V position. Make sure you maintain control throughout the movement. See more

06.01.2022 The hollow-body hold is a beginner-friendly gymnastics and Pilates skill, but its core-strengthening properties are anything but basic. Because the move can be modified to match each persons unique skill and fitness level, its not a risky exercise, although incorrect form may cause some neck and lower-back discomfort. The main downside would be not doing the exercise and missing out on its rewards. 1. Lie on your back, knees pulled up toward your chest. 2. Press your lowe...r back into the floor and lift your head and upper back a few inches, as though you were doing a crunch. 3. Extend your arms overhead and your legs outward, feet and hands hovering at about a 45-degree angle with the floor. 4. Maintain that position as long as you can with good form. Begin with 10-second holds and work up to holding for 30 seconds. Progress Your Hollow Hold Make It Easier: Bend your knees, keeping toes pointed and heels drawn close to your glutes. Raise your arms and hold them close to your sides, actively reaching fingertips toward your toes and engaging your lats as if pushing down on an imaginary box. Extend your legs straight up and gradually lower them without sacrificing the hollow shape. Make It Harder: Lower your legs as close to the floor as possible without losing the hollow shape in your midsection. Raise your arms completely overhead without lowering your shoulders to the floor.

04.01.2022 It’s YOU vs YOU!

04.01.2022 You can nail a perfect Pike Push-up but want to get up on the wall and start doing Handstand Push-ups. The next step in your progress is Box HSPUs. They are a great progression towards eventually getting on the wall. But remember, form is still super important here.... 1. Put your feet on the edge of the box, and walk your hands in so that your torso is as vertical as possible, with your head neutral, looking forward towards the box. 2. From there, lower down, touch your head to the floor (creating a triangle shape with your hands and head). 3. Push back up to the starting position Scaling for this movement could mean adding a mat under your head to reduce the range of motion, or walking your hands out a bit so that you arent quite as vertical. Starting with this option rather than jumping straight to the wall will improve your strength and help your achieve quicker progress when you do transition to the wall.

02.01.2022 So many have different views about this topic. Many with the thought that you are pregnant so that means you live on the couch and cook the bun until it is ready to come out. If you are living an active lifestyle prior to pregnancy it is recommended that you continue doing the same. Obviously training will be altered as the months progress but you will be surprised that you will be able to maintain an active lifestyle until close to your due date. The benefits of having an... active lifestyle during pregnancy are:- - Reduces backaches, constipation, bloating, and swelling. - May help prevent or treat gestational diabetes. - Increases your energy. - Improves your mood. - Improves your posture. - Promotes muscle tone, strength, and endurance. - Helps you sleep better. Personally I strongly believe being active, healthy and strong during my pregnancies, assisted with labour, recovery post pregnancy and helped with losing the weight afterwards. For an example with my first pregnancy I was running until I was 37 weeks pregnant and second pregnancy I needed to stop running at 19 weeks. At CrossFit Proficient we are strong believers in maintaining an active lifestyle during pregnancy. Training with us during your pregnancy will ensure that movements are modified and we will keep you and bub in a safe environment while training during your pregnancy.
