23.01.2022 Animal behaviour is fascinating, not just in dogs I covered my side mirrors but it seems the Noisy Miner keeps attacking a perceived competitor. It is a good reminder that other species experience the world around them differently to us. We cannot make easy assumptions about what they see, hear, smell, feel or otherwise sense. Their behaviour has significance. Mostly, it has been favoured by evolution and/or is due to personal experiences. Whatever the cause, our dogs...just like other animalshave a valid reason to behave the way they do, even if we cannot always understand it. Rather than dismiss behaviour we don't understand or try to suppress it (in case we find it offensive or annoying), why not be curious, learn more about our fellow creatures and help the animals in our care? 21.01.2022 We couldn't even finish our newly relaunched puppy class in March due to the social distancing rules. Here is Cookiewho indeed turned out to be a smart cookie in week 3 with the biggest smile. I miss all the puppies. Puppy class is so much funas it should beand sets your dog up for life. Despite the lockdown, it is still crucially important to socialise your puppy and prevent behaviour problems in the future. There is lots to do! Consider a distance coaching session to make sure you are giving your puppy the best possible start in life.

A note on cues: In Australia dogs may get confused by hearing "drop" for lying down and "drop it" for letting go of something they have in their mouth. Alternatives are "give" (a little odd sounding, if you want your dog to let go of the neighbour's cat or another dog's body part ), "out" (unless you're using this for sending the dog outside), "let go" (possible confusion with the "let's go" cue on walkies), "release", "Aus" (German), or any unique word or sound you can come up with and which is easy for you to say in the required situations. Or maybe we should just use "down" for lying down

This webinar will help you look at your pet’s quality of life as they near the end of their life dance. It will help you to prepare and to recognise the stages of grief and cover the things that we often dismiss as a society. Understanding more about Quality of Life allows us to have a small amount of control in what otherwise feels like a helpless situation. We all know that no time is going to feel good about saying goodbye but a well planned and written last chapter is certainly very helpful with the healing process. When we experience human loss we are devastated at their passing and then we grieve and make arrangements such a funeral with usually a wealth of support around us, but often with the passing of our pets, who we love just as dearly and deeply, and often for a very long time, we are just expected to get back on with life. Nikki believes we should honor and celebrate their lives and most importantly recognise the grief that surrounds their passing. The Presenter Nikki has worked in the veterinary industry for almost 25 years. She has been a qualified counsellor now for 15 years but it was about 10 years ago when she lost her beloved pet that she felt incredibly alone in her grief and she realised she needed to promote the support and guidance she now offers to those feeling consumed by their grief. She now helps many veterinary clinics in supporting their clients when they are looking at putting their pets to peace or helping them with their post loss grief. Pet loss and the grief it brings is real but is really not discussed or supported enough and l make it my mission to be there for anyone who needs me.

15.01.2022 Dogs simply do what works. An important reminder not to misinterpret our dogs' behaviour. They are a different species with their own evolutionary history and therefore think and act differently to us. It is easy to forget, given how closely we live together, but it is neither fair to our dogs nor helpful to a harmonious relationship, if we do not acknowledge and respect their differences.

10.01.2022 What is good dog-dog play? The dogs decide, if and how they want to play. Our job is to make sure play is consensual, i.e. both dogs enjoy the interaction. Here, Frankie the Cocker Spaniel, has a good play bout with another puppy at the dog park. The dogs' bodies are soft and wiggly and there is role reversal (on top/at bottom). 06.01.2022 Don't let your puppy go through their first three months in life without having contact with other dogs (litter- and house-mates don't count!). Dog-dog socialisation, ideally with a variety of dogs of different sizes, breeds and temperaments is crucial for your dog to develop good social communication skills with other dogs, become confident in their interactions with other dogs and gain resilience, so they won't be traumatised when another dog is a bit "anti-social" towards... them in the future (because that's part of life, if you live it, isn't it!?). Puppy socialisation must include dog-dog off-leash play, if you want to prepare your dog for life in a society where nearly 70% of households include dogs. 04.01.2022 Cooper, the young Retriever with the most mesmerising cross-eyed gaze, has progressive retinal atrophy, which means he will be blind soon. To prepare him as best as possible, we are teaching him a few new verbal cues, such as stop, left, right, step up/down and "incoming". Blind dogs can become anxious because they can't see another dog or person approaching and feel vulnerable. 04.01.2022 It was so good to catch up with Cooper, the Belgian Malinois, and his people today. He has come a long way in the last couple of months. When I first saw him, he was a scared 14 week old pup, afraid of dogs, people and lacking in socialisation, which had me worried. However, his humans did a great job turning him around into a happy, much more confident dog. A significant part of this was giving him plenty of off-leash play opportunities with other dogs and helping him expe...rience the world as a safe and happy place. Today at the park he was growled at and briefly pinned by another dog who apparently had an issue with him and Cooper responded like a pro, diffusing the situation rather than picking a fight or becoming scared. His abundant experience of positive interactions with other dogs meant he was ready to encounter a "bully" (or a dog with crude social skills) and he could take it in his stride.
