24.01.2022 It had been two years that I last saw Tink, so it was really great to see her again. Back then we mainly worked on reactivity to other dogs and building her confidence. While she still has some anxiety-related issues (which I'm helping her humans to work on), she seemed very happy and just as sweet as I remember her #kelpiexbordercollie #anxiousdogs #positivereinforcementtraining #fearfree #forcefreedogtraining #dogsofaustralia #makeyourdoghappy #dogtraining
24.01.2022 Fortunately, we found something else for Hank to put in his mouth rather than little fluffy dogs #greatdanefun #greatdanesofaustralia #positivereinforcementtraining #fearfree #forcefreedogtraining #reactivedog #dogtoy #makeyourdoghappy
24.01.2022 Don't let your puppy go through their first three months in life without having contact with other dogs (litter- and house-mates don't count!). Dog-dog socialisation, ideally with a variety of dogs of different sizes, breeds and temperaments is crucial for your dog to develop good social communication skills with other dogs, become confident in their interactions with other dogs and gain resilience, so they won't be traumatised when another dog is a bit "anti-social" towards... them in the future (because that's part of life, if you live it, isn't it!?). Puppy socialisation must include dog-dog off-leash play, if you want to prepare your dog for life in a society where nearly 70% of households include dogs. Besides, it's so much fun!! #puppyplay #puppysocialisation #puppyschool #puppiesofaustralia #positivereinforcementtraining #fearfree #forcefreedogtraining #dogbehaviour #dogtraining #makeyourdoghappy
23.01.2022 Why would we have dogs, if we didn't enjoy watching them "behaving like dogs"? (Unless we have one of those worrying personalities that craves to have control over others, in which case we shouldn't get a dog but rather professional help.) "Behaving like a dog" and being a safe and enjoyable companion don't rule each other out. Positive reinforcement trainers know this and they can achieve it. And they can help you achieve it with your dog.
23.01.2022 A young puppy experiencing the world around them in awe and wonder. Everything stimulates their curiosity, no matter how small and insignificant it may seem to us. They are natural explorers and their happiness is infectious. How is it possible that "dog training" is still riddled with advice on how to crush that happiness? What could possibly make us believe that force and threats and suppression of a dog's natural behaviour are acceptable teaching tools? We have a long way ...to go to be our dogs' best friends. Every single person who lives and works with dogs has the power to make a difference and help make the world a better place for dogs. Be part of it! #staffiesofaustralia #staffypuppy #positivereinforcementtraining #forcefreedogtraining #fearfree #happydog #makeyourdoghappy #dogtraining #puppysocialisation
23.01.2022 If you have a dog who aggressively guards his food (or other "resources"), check out this post with video by Kate LaSala, a fellow graduate from The Academy for Dog Trainers. It also shows how valuable remote training can be.
23.01.2022 Young Saxon, the mastiff cross, was rescued from a not-so-good home and may be a bit more of a "handful" than the average puppy. However, despite his unfortunate start in life we shouldn't assume he is "damaged".There is a lot to love in this adorable pup and his determined biting and barking can be redirected towards more enjoyable activities until he no longer needs those behaviours. Not everyone is fortunate in life but everyone deserves a chance. #mastiffcrosspuppy #anxiouspuppy #aggressivepuppy #makeyourdoghappy #dogbehaviour #dogtraining #positivereinforcementtraining #fearfree #forcefreedogtraining
22.01.2022 "I'm the coolest dude." Finn is not just a pretty face on a beanbag, he is also super smart. And, yes, he knows how to strike a pose on his favourite chaise longue. Like every "good dog" he is a great pretender and secretely enjoys how well he has trained his staff, ahem, his human house mates. #bordoodlesofaustralia #bordoodlepuppy #dogtraining #dogbehaviour #fearfree #positivereinforcementtraining #forcefreedogtraining #happydogs #makeyourdoghappy #dogchillin #dogonbeanbag
20.01.2022 Be generous with your dog and you are far more likely to get the behaviours you want. Yes, it can be that simple.
20.01.2022 Excellent infographic on how to teach your dog some impulse control while playing tug. A note on cues: In Australia dogs may get confused by hearing "drop" for lying down and "drop it" for letting go of something they have in their mouth. Alternatives are "give" (a little odd sounding, if you want your dog to let go of the neighbour's cat or another dog's body part ), "out" (unless you're using this for sending the dog outside), "let go" (possible confusion with the "let's go" cue on walkies), "release", "Aus" (German), or any unique word or sound you can come up with and which is easy for you to say in the required situations. Or maybe we should just use "down" for lying down
19.01.2022 Dogs and couches kind of go together, don't you think? : ) Sage and entertaining advice from Kristi Benson and Practical Pup.
19.01.2022 It was so good to catch up with Cooper, the Belgian Malinois, and his people today. He has come a long way in the last couple of months. When I first saw him, he was a scared 14 week old pup, afraid of dogs, people and lacking in socialisation, which had me worried. However, his humans did a great job turning him around into a happy, much more confident dog. A significant part of this was giving him plenty of off-leash play opportunities with other dogs and helping him expe...rience the world as a safe and happy place. Today at the park he was growled at and briefly pinned by another dog who apparently had an issue with him and Cooper responded like a pro, diffusing the situation rather than picking a fight or becoming scared. His abundant experience of positive interactions with other dogs meant he was ready to encounter a "bully" (or a dog with crude social skills) and he could take it in his stride. Proud of you, Cooper #belgianmalinoispuppy #belgianmalinois #positivereinforcementtraining #fearfree #forcefreedogtraining #happydogs #makeyourdoghappy #dogbehaviour #dogpark #dogplayskills #dogtraining
19.01.2022 Oh my. "Human-less" puppy socials started today at @southyarravetlive streamed for the puppy parentsand this was one of the participants. Despite his snappiness, I would have happily abducted him in a heartbeat. Great to mingle with puppies again and provide them with much needed dog-dog socialisation. #puppiesofaustralia #puppysocialisation #puppyschool #germanshepherdpuppy #germanshepherdsofaustralia #positivereinforcementtraining #fearfree #forcefreedogtraining #crosspaws #dogtrainingmelbourne
18.01.2022 We couldn't even finish our newly relaunched puppy class in March due to the social distancing rules. Here is Cookiewho indeed turned out to be a smart cookie in week 3 with the biggest smile. I miss all the puppies. Puppy class is so much funas it should beand sets your dog up for life. Despite the lockdown, it is still crucially important to socialise your puppy and prevent behaviour problems in the future. There is lots to do! Consider a distance coaching session to make sure you are giving your puppy the best possible start in life.
17.01.2022 Separation anxiety is on the mind of many dog parents right now. Check out Malena DeMartini's blog for expert advice and support.
17.01.2022 The Pet Professional Guild with support from The Academy for Dog Trainers has created a fabulous resource, not just for rescue groups but anyone who likes to know more about dog-dog play. Check it out!
16.01.2022 Meet Ziggy, the "ear chomper". The 6 months old Boston Terrier is a force to be reckoned with on the playing field. Her play style istypical for many terriers and bulldogsa bit "intense". Sometimes this is mistaken for aggression, which is unfortunate, because they are having a bloody good time. It is important that all dogs learn about the different temperaments and play styles of other dogs, so they become neither afraid of nor aggressive towards other dogs and learn goo...d social canine communication skills. It may be necessary to help your "bulldozer" that not all dogs enjoy rough play. With some gentle interruptions, play breaks (sit for treat anyone?) and timely positive feedback, you can assist your dog to become a pro-player at the dog park and even help educate other dogs. #bostonterrierpuppy #bostonterrier #positivereinforcementdogtraining #fearfree #forcefreedogtraining #puppytraining #dogbehaviour #dogtraining #makeyourdoghappy #dogplayskills #dogsocialisation
16.01.2022 If you missed our post last week, the Anthrozoology Research Group is currently recruiting participants for a study looking at the mental health effects of diff...erent interactions with our dogs at home. You don't even have to leave the comfort of your living room! (it's done over Zoom). If you own a dog, have a computer and can spare 20-30 minutes then please contact Andrew at [email protected] for more information. Please share this with anyone who might be interested. Playing with your dog and helping science? It's an opportunity too good to miss!
15.01.2022 If you're fed up with all the conflicting information out there on how to have a good life with your dog, here is your way out. Zazie Todd, owner of Companion Animal Psychology has created a highly valuable resource which is not just scientifically up to date but also a great read. It's cold and wet in Melbourne today. A good time to get stuck in a good book!
15.01.2022 Don't be afraid of change and conflict. It's an opportunity to grow and show our potential. Every day is a new beginning. I love this post by Kristi Benson our very human struggles when dealing with conflicting information. Rather than sticking our heads in the sand or digging our heels in, we can grab the chance to do things better or smarter or kinder. Our brains are good at learning and adaptation, so we might as well make use of it!
12.01.2022 Little dog, big personality. Bino, the Pomeranian pup, is super smart and made a great first impression at puppy socials. His humans want to get everything right from the beginning and are doing a great job with positive reinforcement and allowing him to explore the world around him without fear. No force is ever needed to develop desirable skills in a dog. Bino is one of the lucky ones! #pomeraniansofaustralia #pomeranianpuppy #puppysocialisation #puppiesofaustralia #fearfree #positivereinforcementdogtraining #happydogs #makeyourdoghappy #dogbehaviour #dogtraining
12.01.2022 Boxer puppy socialisation, private client. Piper is learning that strangers are awesome and predict good things: treats & play, pats & praise. 12.01.2022 Dogs simply do what works. An important reminder not to misinterpret our dogs' behaviour. They are a different species with their own evolutionary history and therefore think and act differently to us. It is easy to forget, given how closely we live together, but it is neither fair to our dogs nor helpful to a harmonious relationship, if we do not acknowledge and respect their differences.
11.01.2022 Animal behaviour is fascinating, not just in dogs I covered my side mirrors but it seems the Noisy Miner keeps attacking a perceived competitor. It is a good reminder that other species experience the world around them differently to us. We cannot make easy assumptions about what they see, hear, smell, feel or otherwise sense. Their behaviour has significance. Mostly, it has been favoured by evolution and/or is due to personal experiences. Whatever the cause, our dogs...just like other animalshave a valid reason to behave the way they do, even if we cannot always understand it. Rather than dismiss behaviour we don't understand or try to suppress it (in case we find it offensive or annoying), why not be curious, learn more about our fellow creatures and help the animals in our care? Animal behaviour is a never ending source of awe and inspiration. #bekindtoanimals #animalbehaviour #positivereinforcementtraining #fearfree #forcefreedogtraining #dogbehaviour #makeyourdoghappy #noisyminer #birdsofaustralia #birdattackingwindow
11.01.2022 Remi might be the littlest but it doesn't faze him one bit. Big dogs, little dogs, quiet dogs, loud dogs, reserved dogs, wanting-to-be-everybody's-friend dogs, wise dogs, clueless dogs, oldies and puppiesall mingling at the dog park and getting along. It's the best. And it works best when the humans truly understand canine communication and play referee if required (without being paranoid either or they just get in the way of the fun ). #dogparkfun #dogplay #puppytraining #dogtraining #dogbehaviour #fearfree #positivereinforcementtraining #forcefreedogtraining #happydogs #makeyourdoghappy #dachshundpuppy #dachshundsofaustralia #fawknerparkdogs
11.01.2022 Anxiety in dogs is no less real as it is in people. Dog trainer Suzanne Bryner, owner of Lucky Fido Dog Training shares her personal story and how she manages the difficult times.
10.01.2022 Let's move forward into a bright future of dog training without fear and pain. Wonderful post by Kristi Benson.
09.01.2022 "all of the collars tested had the potential to cause injury, even at the lowest level of pressure" Is your dog pulling on leash? Are you in the habit of yanking on your dog's leash as a "correction"? Consider your dog's health and welfare. There are much better ways to teach your dog to walk nicely on leash. Take the stress out of walking with your dog, so you can both enjoy it
09.01.2022 Cooper, the young Retriever with the most mesmerising cross-eyed gaze, has progressive retinal atrophy, which means he will be blind soon. To prepare him as best as possible, we are teaching him a few new verbal cues, such as stop, left, right, step up/down and "incoming". Blind dogs can become anxious because they can't see another dog or person approaching and feel vulnerable. Let's hope we can prevent this happy boy from losing his enthusiasn and love of life! #flatcoatedretriever #blinddog #progressiveretinalatrophy #dogtraining #positivereinforcementtraining #fearfree #forcefreedogtraining #happydogs #makeyourdoghappy
08.01.2022 If you don't get your puppy to love the world they live in and the things we do with/to them, be afraid! We have an important role to play when it comes to preventing or alleviating fear & anxiety in our dogs and, with that, avoid serious behaviour problems. It all starts with understanding dog behaviournot the outdated dominance lore but the science of animal behaviour. Our dogs will love us for it.
06.01.2022 The most irresistible face! Who could say 'no' to Luna?! In fact, 'no' is not a useful word in dog training. Better to ask "what could the dog do instead" and then reinforce them for that. And, most importantly, say "yes" to your dog a lot. Luna is learning to love her crate (helps enormously with house- and chew-training and offers a safe and comfortable place for the pup to retreat to) and how to make good things happen in her life by being a bit more patient and less demanding. And, with her stellar focus she'll learn in no time. #germanshepherdpoodle #shepadoodle #puppyschool #puppytraining #dogtraining #dogbehaviour #fearfree #positivereinforcementtraining #forcefreedogtraining #happydogs #makeyourdoghappy
06.01.2022 What is good dog-dog play? The dogs decide, if and how they want to play. Our job is to make sure play is consensual, i.e. both dogs enjoy the interaction. Here, Frankie the Cocker Spaniel, has a good play bout with another puppy at the dog park. The dogs' bodies are soft and wiggly and there is role reversal (on top/at bottom). You can see the Heeler's "play face" at times and both dogs have opportunities to get away (if one was stuck for too long at the bottom and we had d...oubts, we can always do a "consent test", i.e. briefly removing the dog on top to give the other dog a choice). #cockerspanielpuppy #redheelerpuppy #dogparkplay #puppyplay #puppytraining #positivereinforcementtraining #fearfree #forcefreedogtraining #dogtraining #happydogs #makeyourdoghappy
06.01.2022 A big step in the right direction! Let's hope more pet shops have the courage to take a stance and to play their part in promoting animal welfare and stop profiting from harmful devices such as electronic collars. https://about.petco.com/2020-10-06-Stop-the-Shock-Petco-End
05.01.2022 Caught up with these two smoochable fellas and their humans today. Simba, the 6 months old, gets a little stressed when left by himself. That's no surprise, given thatdue to COVIDhis humans and older house mate Rusty have always been around. It's a problem I expect to encounter a lot this year. Please prepare your dog for life after lockdown: Practise absences, short at first, then a bit longeraccording to what your dog is happy with. Provide home-alone enrichment in form of food puzzle toys. Watch your dog on surveillance cam, so you know that they're alright. Anxiety sucks. Don't let your dog be anxious. #goldenretrieverpuppy #goldens #goldenretrieversofaustralia #bestmates #dogtraining #puppytraining #happydogs #positivereinforcementtraining #fearfree #forcefreedogtraining #separationanxiety #makeyourdoghappy

05.01.2022 Germany is at the forefront of animal welfare with some new rules. Sadly, it still isn't commonly knownor accepted and acted uponthat dogs need a lot more than food and water and the occasional game of fetch to be physically and mentally healthy. As the German Minister for Agriculture says: Dogs are not cuddly toys. They also have their own needs, which need to be taken into account.
04.01.2022 Dog trainer Kelly Duggan, co-owner of All Dogs Go To Kevin LLC, shares some great thoughts on how our actions can mean the difference between having a happy, healthy dog and living in harmony with them or upsetting the balance and creating behaviour problems.
04.01.2022 The world of dog training is full of fads, fashion and "fake news". When I joined The Academy for Dog Trainers 8 years ago, it was a relief to discover a way out of the "jungle", led by the fact-based teachings of Jean Donaldson. And, her webinars are not just eye opening, but always entertaining.
02.01.2022 Pet Quality of Life - their final years Presented by Nikki Catley Join us for our next live webinar on 21 October 7 pm on this important topic.... You can book here https://www.ppgaustralia.net.au/event-3990564 Pet loss and the grief it brings is so very real but it is often not discussed or supported enough and can sometimes even be dismissed or not taken seriously. Yet those with pets, or those that have lost cherished pets certainly know differently. As pet parents, understanding about our companions quality of life is so important. This webinar will help you look at your pet’s quality of life as they near the end of their life dance. It will help you to prepare and to recognise the stages of grief and cover the things that we often dismiss as a society. Understanding more about Quality of Life allows us to have a small amount of control in what otherwise feels like a helpless situation. We all know that no time is going to feel good about saying goodbye but a well planned and written last chapter is certainly very helpful with the healing process. When we experience human loss we are devastated at their passing and then we grieve and make arrangements such a funeral with usually a wealth of support around us, but often with the passing of our pets, who we love just as dearly and deeply, and often for a very long time, we are just expected to get back on with life. Nikki believes we should honor and celebrate their lives and most importantly recognise the grief that surrounds their passing. The Presenter Nikki has worked in the veterinary industry for almost 25 years. She has been a qualified counsellor now for 15 years but it was about 10 years ago when she lost her beloved pet that she felt incredibly alone in her grief and she realised she needed to promote the support and guidance she now offers to those feeling consumed by their grief. She now helps many veterinary clinics in supporting their clients when they are looking at putting their pets to peace or helping them with their post loss grief. Pet loss and the grief it brings is real but is really not discussed or supported enough and l make it my mission to be there for anyone who needs me.
01.01.2022 Who is this mysterious creature lurking in the shadows? It's a Belgian Malinois puppy! The 14 week old boy is very worried about strangers, other dogs and many things in his environment. It is paramount to get puppies like Cooperand especially a breed which has a tendency to be suspicious of strangerson a heavy diet of humans/dogs =chicken & cheese, ... i.e. building positive associations with strangers, other dogs and everything that worries them. We want our dogs to love people and other dogs, so they don't feel anxious around them and ever feel the need to show aggressive behaviour. Come out of the shadows, Cooper!
