09.01.2022 Artist James Dodd has been Commissioned by Port Pirie Regional Council to paint a mural on the Reflections Building, 33 Bowman Street, Crystal Brook. James Dodd has exhibited widely across Australia in artist run, publicly funded and commercial spaces. His work traverses (and collapses) the boundaries between visual street culture, alternative uses of urban space and existing gallery conventions. Whilst pursuing a practice that has painting as a constant, James explores built... structures, mobile objects, DIY technology and a plethora of other variants as components of his outcomes. James has taught at Adelaide Central School of Art and University of South Australia and also regularly pursues projects with school and community groups across Australia. He is particularly passionate about working with regional youth and disadvantaged audiences. James is represented by Hugo Michell Gallery in Adelaide and Backwoods Gallery, Melbourne. 01.01.2022 The Port Pirie Regional Council with assistance from Australian Government, Drought Communities Programme are commissioning a mural project to be executed at the 33 Bowman Street, (Reflections Building), Crystal Brook. The vision for the project is to create an artwork that can have a lasting impression on the township, its people and visitors. The imagery will be developed in consultation with locals and be executed by established S.A. artist, James Dodd. Many murals enca...psulate and perpetuate community values via the imagery they depict. In many cases, these murals are attempting to encapsulate abstract ideas and concepts a challenging undertaking. One component of the broader process is to present a few prompts that community members might respond to, in order to develop imagery for this outcome. As such, we have prepared a few questions (following) that you can offer feedback to. The hope is to create something which is distinct and might positively set itself aside from many existing murals out there already. Not everyones suggestions will end up as components of the outcome but we need everyones input at this stage to really get the best sense of desires across the community. The turnaround time for this project is compact so please respond sooner rather than later. 1. Ongoing updates to the process will be presented via a publicly accessible Facebook page @CrystalBrookMuralConsultation 2. What are the most significant parts of Crystal Brooks history for you? 3. What are the most significant parts of contemporary (and future) life in Crystal Brook for you? 4. If you could suggest 3 images that your would most like to see in a mural in Crystal Brook, what would they be?
