23.01.2022 CSCOMMS' Timely Tip #45 Wearables - from Android-based smart watches to the Watch and beyond. But where are they heading? Google Glass fairly famously floundered, but is the idea of augmented reality (AR) likely to surpass virtual reality (VR)? Head over to this article to find out http://www.news.com.au//n/36a340021d224501521cd48c8cb88b37... Either way, tech that fits into our daily lives and routines is the way of the future, and the less cumbersome, the better.

21.01.2022 CSCOMMS' Timely Tip #39 Thinking about home security? We wouldn't blame you, with all the crime that seems to be occurring around town. Making your home and family secure is very important, so would you trust the safety and security of your precious family and belongings to any old person? No.... It seems more and more often that companies who specialise in, or built a name in, areas other than security are jumping on the safety bandwagon and offering to install security systems. But what does a home entertainment company, or a consumer electronics retailer know about properly securing your home? You may be enticed to click on the advertisements you see on Facebook or Twitter, but these companies are not the safest bet. Don't risk it! If you want to ensure the safety and security of your family home, or your business, then there is only one thing to do: contact CSCOMMS today. We are fully qualified, a member of the Australian Security Industry Association Limited (ASIAL) and registered with Victoria Police. Here's a refresh on just one of the ways CSCOMMS can help to make your home or business secure today: http://cscomms.com.au/security/intruder-alarms

20.01.2022 CSCOMMS' Timely Tip #41 And so this is Christmas (shopping time) And what have you done? Another year over... And a new one just begun.... Okay, so the John Lennon reference was unnecessary. It is, however, that time of year again. Why not get your loved one(s) some awesome tech this year? Here's a video that shows some cool tech for under $100 (US). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YGjP0TIeJbs

18.01.2022 CSCOMMS' Timely Tip #49 Many sites nowadays have a small pop-up telling you that they use cookies, but what are these cookies and what do they do? No, they aren't the type of cookies the Cookie Monster likes to eat... they are in fact a small file with information relating to the website you are visiting or have visited. More often than not, they are harmless and simply allow your browser to know that you have already visited that site today, and where you were when you left ...it. Some sites will use cookies to find out some reasonably harmless information about you, without identifying you - that is, your general location, what type of browser you are viewing the site on and what operating system you are using. Most of this information is useful for the website developer, so that they can build a better website experience for you. In some cases, there may be websites that will encase malicious code inside their cookies. This code can provide more specific, but still generic data, such as your external IP address. Not very often (any more), the malicious code could be more harmful. If you have up-to-date antivirus and anti-malware software on your computer, this will help to protect you and your data. A good idea is to also run an ad-blocker plugin or other browser plugin to detect when harmful tracking sites or advertisement sites are being loaded.

18.01.2022 CSCOMMS' Timely Tip # 35 Today, Monday March 21st, 2016, Apple are holding an event in Palo Alto, California (it will actually start at 4am TOMORROW our time). It is expected that they will announce a new 4-inch iPhone (the iPhone SE), a new iPad Pro 9.7-inch, along with some new wrist bands for Apple Watch. It is expected that we will also see the latest iteration of iOS9, WatchOS2 and OS X 10.11.4.... If you feel like being the early bird who catches the worm, you can watch the event on live streaming at http://www.apple.com/apple-events/march-2016/

17.01.2022 CSCOMMS' Timely Tip #50 By gar, it's been a while... But here we are, back in time for Christmas. There is still time to get your BFF, or significant other the tech they want for Christmas, so here is a video that suggests some great tech for less than US$100.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UINgml0Z51Q

16.01.2022 CSCOMMS' Timely Tip #46 Did you buy the iPhone 6 when it first came out? Then the 6s, and the 7 last year? It is always great fun buying new tech, especially the latest and greatest phone (Galaxy S8?), but what do you do with all that 'old' tech? Sell it on eBay? Gumtree? Cash Converters? While it may be possible to make a few dollars of the purchase back by selling, if your phone or other tech is that little bit older, it may not be worth paying the fees, etc. to sell.... So what can you do? You can't just throw it in the bin - there's dangerous chemicals and materials that can't go to land fill... so what to do? MobileMuster will help you get rid of your old tech or mobile phone in a safe, green way - simply by recycling them! So of you have a couple of old Nokias sitting around that you'll never use again (remember that the 2G networks are being shut down this year, so they won't work anyway), send them or take them in to MobileMuster. http://www.mobilemuster.com.au

13.01.2022 CSCOMMS' Timely Tip #48 We've had a bit of a break from Timely Tips for a couple of months, but they are BACK! We have been really busy all around... but if you want more Timely Tips, please make sure you Like and Share the posts NAS - What does it mean? Do I need NAS?... Well, NAS stands for Network Attached Storage. That is, in lay terms, storage like an external Hard Drive that can be accessed by anyone on who is connected to your network. This can, depending on your router, be as simple as connecting an external hard disk to your router. So, do I need to get one? This depends on your needs, ultimately. If you want to backup multiple PCs, or have a large collection of movies/TV shows that you want available to anyone on the network, NAS could be the answer. If you are wanting to share or stream multimedia, simply plugging and external disk into your router isn't really going to cut it. There are a plethora of NAS solutions available from single drive through to multi-drive platforms. If you are not sure what is most suitable for your needs, contact CSCOMMS and we can provide you with some advice on what is likely to meet your requirements.

11.01.2022 CSCOMMS' Timely Tip #47 A timely reminder to always make sure you have up-to-date anti-virus and anti-malware software on your devices. With so many businesses and individuals affected by the recent 'WannaCry' virus, it has never been more important to keep on top of your computer's protection. You can also NEVER be too careful when it comes to your private information. Using a Virtual Private Network is a great way to throw would-be hackers and phishers 'off the scent'.

10.01.2022 CCOMMS' Timely Tip #36 We have said before about how important Anti-Virus software is... we even linked to a site that had the 'Top 5' at the time. Everyone knows that you need to run Ant-Virus software on a Windows computer, bit Apple Mac's don't need Ant-Virus... they are immune, aren't they?... Well, to put it bluntly... NO! As more and more consumers purchase Apple Mac computers, more and more hackers and phishers are writing code that specifically targets Mac OS X users. Just as with the myriad Windows viruses, malware, phishing codes and spyware, the ones for OS X are often spread through seemingly legitimate and 'safe' sites on the interwebs. Many of the major Ant-Virus software companies are now also offering Mac versions of their software. Again, just like on Windows machines, some Anti-Virus programs are better than others - and for different reasons. Jump onto Google and search for Mac Ant-virus and you are likely to come across a piece of software called 'Mac Keeper' - be wary: many experts believe that although this program purports to protect your Mac, it may in fact do more harm than good and it can be a pain to remove once installed. Safe browsing, and remember: CSCOMMS is here to help you with all your technological needs.

08.01.2022 CSCOMMS' Timely Tip #38 With such bad weather at the moment, we thought you could use a humourous pick me up. So here it is!

07.01.2022 CSCOMMS' Timely Tip #40 The BIG four-oh! We've been super-busy over the last couple of months, but we appreciate your patience in waiting for your (supposedly) monthly dose of tech tips! If you have a young family, odds are that you will either have, or soon be purchasing a baby monitor of some kind. There have been a number of 'scare-tactic' stories around lately that talk about monitors being hacked.... With such a huge range of monitors to choose from, how can you ensure that the monitor you purchase won't be 'hacked' and your precious little ones' face plastered all over the internet? Well, here are a few facts about modern monitors: 1. If it is an audio only monitor, it will most likely use Digital Enhanced Cordless Telecommunication technology, or DECT. This is a very common and secure means of wirelessly transferring data. It has been used in cordless phones for many years. 2. If you have a 'standard' video monitor (that is, not able to be connected to the internet), it will use either DECT or 2.4GHz WiFi technology. If it uses 2.4GHz WiFi connectivity, the data is sent on a higher channel than is available for Home WiFi use and the data is encrypted - making it unworkable for anyone to 'hack' it. 3. Some of the more expensive video monitors allow you to view the image from the camera on your mobile device or computer, even when you are away from home. These monitors use WiFi and your home network to transmit data. These cameras are the type that have been 'hacked', however, there are steps you can take to ensure your safety. Firstly, make sure that you have a secured WiFi network. You should always use WPA or WPA2 encryption on your network. If your network is using WEP security, you should upgrade it immediately. Secondly, make sure to keep all passwords for your network safe. Thirdly, if you know you are not going to need the facility to check the monitor away from home, simply switch the feature off. Further network security, such as MAC filtering, IP blocking, a Firewall (on the modem) and switching off outgoing ports are also ways that you can help protect your network from a malicious attack. 02.01.2022 CSCOMMS' Timely Tip #37 Keeping your personal details private while surfing the interwebs has never been more important... identity theft, malware, adware... the list of dangers is endless. But there is a simple, easy way to protect your data when you are online. A Virtual Private Network, or VPN, is a simple, often free way to protect your valuable data.... There are many ways you can organise a VPN. You can head over to http://www.opera.com/developer and download the latest Opera Developer web browser (which includes a VPN when browsing in a private window). Opera is also a quick, reliable web browser. Alternatively, if you are rather attached to your current web browser, you can also head over to https://www.vpnunlimitedapp.com/en and install an app that will help you secure your data. A VPN will also let you 'pretend' to be from another country... say if you wanted to stream the latest episode of Game of Thrones from the US site...
