25.01.2022 Super cute picnic setup for a Christmas gathering yesterday! Thanks for making it so easy @chalmerswine @firecrackerevent Perfect way to start the season

24.01.2022 Happy first (beautiful!) day of Spring! Whilst lockdown in Melbourne feels really heavy this time around and we are missing our team, our friends, and working at events so very much, we are nonetheless delighted to welcome the beginning of our most favourite season and the inspiration and breath of fresh air it brings! We’ve spent the past few weeks working on some exciting new projects. Sign up to our newsletter (https://merchantrd.us11.list-manage.com/subscribe), for a lit...tle slice of sunshine in your inbox and a peek at what’s been keeping us busy and our big plans for the months ahead! ~ Photography @marieluise #hellospring #merchantroadevents #getoutandgather #foodwinewomen #melbourneevents

24.01.2022 This beautiful space We feel very lucky to be back and planning events! With numbers for indoor and outdoor events soon to increase, we are so ready to help people gather again! We manage a gorgeous events space in this building and we have a phenomenal team of young, talented women who are very keen to get back to work and help you to create something magical [email protected] if you'd like to chat! x - photography Gold and Grit Photography

23.01.2022 There are so many things we miss about life pre-lockdown, and taking our table to some truly spectacular places and meeting new people would have to top that list! We first met talented Melbourne photographer Marie-Luise Skibbe at an intimate dinner curated for IN BED Store. Shortly afterwards, we launched our 2019 pop-up dining project, Summer Series. We invited Marie-Luise to join us for the first event in the series, a long-table lunch against a backdrop of floating flower...s and giant ferns in Emerald, Victoria. We were thrilled to welcome Marie-Luise to our table and to have her so beautifully capture the magic of that day. Whilst we have taken an obligatory break from our long-table dinners, we have stayed closely connected to our community and the people who make the work we do possible. We recently (prior to Melbourne lockdown v.2!), chatted to Marie-Luise to see what has changed for her over the past few months, and what she was feeling hopeful about. 20.01.2022 How cute is this picnic set-up we did on the weekend?!! So much colour! It was made all the more gorgeous thanks to @chalmerswine and really delicious picnic boxes from @firecrackerevent. We have pretty Summer park packages So if you are planning a gathering and a fancy picnic sounds fun, get in touch! [email protected]

20.01.2022 Yes!!!!! We did it!! Such amazing news for Victoria today. Not long until we can hang the lights, fill your glasses and plates, and all sit together at the one table!! Whilst gatherings are still limited, we can really start planning now! So happy for all of our hospitality and retail friends. Can’t wait to get back to getting together again! ~ Photography Gold and Grit Photography

20.01.2022 We chatted to Stina Evjan (Gold and Grit Photography ) this week as part of a new Five Minutes With series we’ve started! We’re checking in regularly with many of the women who we work with and who support our training program and broader social mission. It has helped us stay inspired and feel connected - we’re sharing in the hope it might do the same for you Extract here, head to the Journal section of our website for full interview. https://merchantrd.com/journal... - Hi Stina! What has been the most significant change you’ve experienced since isolation? How are you feeling about it all? The most obvious one is that weeks go by without me picking up a camera, when normally I am out shooting multiple times a week. But the biggest impact has probably been the slower pace of life. It is like time has stretched out. It took a while, but I am actually starting to enjoy that. What do your work days look like? I wake up at 8am, make myself breakfast and get myself ready to go to work by 9.30am. Yes, I am one of those that will put makeup on even though I’m just at home! I have three slots of work in the day, one before lunch and two after. Between them I have set times for creative outlets: knitting, reading or clay work. In the evenings I go for a run and then make dinner with the husband and watch Masterchef. Then rinse, repeat. What’s helping you to stay inspired? Other people! Staying connected to friends and colleagues have been super important to me. Recently I’ve also started doing weekly accountability catch ups with a friend who is also a photographer. These have really given me motivation and energy to finish things. What do you feel hopeful about? I’m actually feeling quite hopeful about the future. People are being deprived of so many elements of life right now and yes, things will absolutely be hard for a lot of people. But when we’re at the other end of it I foresee a lot of excitement, celebration and love. I’ve always been a bit of an organiser/dreamer at heart. I have found it really helpful to start making plans for future dinner parties, celebrations and trips, even though they’re far into the future, so that I can cram my life full of people again as soon as it’s possible.

19.01.2022 We are really excited for the coming Summer, and to be honest, pretty keen to say goodbye to 2020 and a great big arms open hello to the new year! The events in industry in Melbourne was one of the first to feel the effects of Covid and it is going to be a long time until it recovers. Yet, here we are, tentatively planning for some beautiful gatherings in the coming months, and we are slowly starting to feel like ourselves again! At the core of all of the beautiful projects... we work on and the events we bring to life, is the belief that work empowers women. Young women in particular have been adversely affected by the economic impact of this virus, especially here in Victoria, and the work that we do in providing training and employment pathways to young women from refugee backgrounds has never been more important. In 2021, we hope to increase our intake for our training program, to provide as many young women as possible with the social connections, skills and experience they need to secure meaningful employment. If you would like to support this, you can head over to our sister social enterprise The Beautiful Bunch where you can purchase flowers from us : ) And if you are planning an event, you can write to us ([email protected]). Not only do we throw magical garden parties, but we also manage weddings and private events in a beautiful venue in Fitzroy, just opposite Edinburgh Gardens. Thank you for your support to date. We feel really lucky to be able to continue to work with such kind, talented people, and to have the support of some of the loveliest clients in our beautiful city. We are so happy to see it all coming back to life

18.01.2022 Thank you to everyone who has been so supportive of our new floral sister The Beautiful Bunch We have loved creating bouquets for you and making someone’s day when we arrive at their door with an armful of beautiful blooms! (Covid-safe, contactless, etc!) People have such a strong emotional connection to flowers and it has been really special to help you stay in touch and send love, especially during this time. We’re taking orders up until 6pm tomorrow for a big delivery day Tuesday. So head over to The Beautiful Bunch (https://www.thebeautifulbunch.com/) and pop in an order ($60 incl. delivery), if you’d like to send something beautiful and support the work we do!

17.01.2022 Too soon to dream? Last week we received a record number of enquiries for Summer and 2021 events!! It feels so nice to be chatting to people about beautiful celebrations again Hoping nights like these will soon be a little closer to reality! 16.01.2022 Happy International Women’s Day! Go us! Reposting this from our sister social enterprise @the.beautifulbunch ~ @the.beautifulbunch and our sister @merchantroadmelb are an all-female team, so every day is cause for celebrating women around here! The mission of both social enterprises is to provide young women from refugee backgrounds with the skills, confidence and social connections they need to find meaningful employment and fulfil their (big!) dreams. We ar...e one of the only Victorian not-for-profits working specifically with young women from refugee backgrounds who are experiencing barriers to employment and this is important as being young, female, and from a refugee background, means that this group faces some of the most significant challenges to entering the workforce. Reflecting on the week in Australian federal politics and the way that young women continue to be disproportionally affected by the economic consequences of Covid-19, sometimes it does feel a little hard to celebrate days like today. However, one of our trainees, Raga (pictured) has just found work at a local florist!! And we have had so much support and lovely messages from customers buying flowers from us this week that today does feel really special and it is a good reminder to celebrate our achievements and that of our team. If you’d like to support the work we do, you can book an event with @merchantroadmelb or buy some flowers @thebeautiful.bunch. As not-for-profits, (with recently-acquired charitable status ), you are directly funding our social mission and helping us provide opportunities to young women to reach their potential. Thank you for supporting us and happy IWD to all the exceptional women out there xo #merchantroadmelbourne #womensupportingwomen #melbourneevents #womeninbusiness #socialenterprise #choosetochallenge #iwd2021

13.01.2022 How sweet are these!! We’ve had so much lovely feedback on our Woman tote bags Thank you to everyone who has purchased so far! We’ll be filling these with flowers, coffee, baked goods + note cards and delivering from 9am this Sunday Available to order here https://merchantrd.com/ xo

12.01.2022 It’s a gloomy night, but we have something to brighten it for you!! This year for Mother’s Day, Sunday the 10th of May, we are doing beautiful gift tote bags. We’ve teamed up with our friends at Chalmers Wines Australia Market Lane Coffee and All Are Welcome to put together a parcel of our favourite things Whilst we’ll be putting these bags together for Mother’s Day, we’ve created them with any person who you would like to treat in mind, as let’s face it, flowers, wine, ...coffee, baked goods and telling people you love them, has never been more important!! Each bag includes a beautiful note-card, and we’ll hand write a personal message on it for you. The gifts will enable us to provide employment opportunities to young women who have participated in our training program, many of whom are facing additional barriers to finding work during this challenging time. Thank you to our friends Britt and Nathan for creating such a beautiful design for these. Head on over to our website, link below, to purchase! https://merchantrd.com

12.01.2022 Merchant Road will soon have a baby sister! In our newsletter earlier this week, we shared some news on a little side project we’ve been working on to keep us busy until we’re able to have big, beautiful gatherings again We’ll be sharing our progress and new offerings via our newsletter (and here, shortly), over the coming weeks. 12.01.2022 We might not be able to enjoy family gatherings for Mother’s Day this year, or spoil Mum with brunch, but we can still celebrate and show love in isolation!! Mother’s Day is now a week away and if you haven’t already, you should take a look at the beautiful gift tote bags we’re creating! The contents vary according to which bag you select, but each includes a combination of the following: MR Printed Woman Tote Hand-written note card... Seasonal bouquet of flowers made by one of our trainees 250g bag of Marimbus Espresso coffee from Market Lane Biscuit box from All Are Welcome Your choice of Chalmers wine Almost half of all orders placed thus far have been for people other than Mums! We’ve designed them so you can send something beautiful to any special woman in your life as it has never been more important to show appreciation for those we love. All proceeds from these gifts are going towards paid employment for young women from refugee backgrounds who have participated in our hospitality training program. Many don’t qualify for government subsidies and are now experiencing additional barriers to finding paid work. The team will be making beautiful bouquets, handwriting notecards, and assembling the bags from our Fitzroy Studio. We’ll then be delivering the gifts across Melbourne from 9am next Sunday! 10.01.2022 Just when we were preparing to host some gorgeous smaller events and busy planning for some bigger ones, here we are in lockdown again Over the next month, we’ll be releasing additional packages for small gatherings and also some new ways to support our training program, which will now be more important than ever In the meantime, please keep writing to us about your future event plans! 10.01.2022 As restrictions ease and things start feeling a little more normal, we, like many people, have been thinking about what kind of normal we’d like to return to. This period has given us the chance to spend more time with family and also the opportunity to pause and deeply reflect on what we do and why. Last week we chatted to Wintana, who has similarly found a silver lining to these strange few months. Wintana is one of our 2019 Many Hands graduates. She began working as an adm...in assistant at Inclusive Australia, shortly after graduating from our program and has been managing this role alongside a final year of a commerce degree at Monash. Wintana shared with us a little about her daily routine, how she has managed under isolation, and what she is feeling grateful for. The full discussion is up on our journal link here: https://merchantrd.com/journal. Wintana’s closing statement is indicative of her resilience and optimism, and being able to work alongside young women like Wintana again is definitely something we are very eager to return to xo ~ photography Gold and Grit Photography #manyhands #merchantroadevents #womensupportingwomen #womeninbusiness #theleaguewomen #melbourneevents

10.01.2022 Hi! It’s been a minute, but we’re back! We’ve been really busy booking upcoming events, and preparing for what is looking to be a big couple of months ahead!! We’ve been working on Many Hands, our training program for young women from refugee backgrounds, and thinking creatively about how we can grow our community and support for the work we do through our sister @the.beautifulbunch If you’re planning a gathering, we’d love to hear from you! Winter events are truly the best... We light the fire, order extra red wine, and ensure there’s something super indulgent on the dessert menu [email protected] if you’d like us to help you bring something beautiful to life! ~ Photos @marniehawson . . . . #merchantroadevents #melbourneevents #fitzroynorth #womensupportingwomen #melbounewedding #longtable #longtabledinner

10.01.2022 Whilst there are not too many cakes we don’t like, this one would have to top our list for the most perfectly decadent and good-looking! We served this chocolate fudge cake with caramelised figs and bee pollen cream as part of a secret garden party we hosted last year. Thanks to chefs Lucy Whitlow and Ella Ruxton for sharing this recipe with us at a time when the therapeutic benefits of baking are especially appreciated! 09.01.2022 One of the hardest things about lockdown for us has been not running our training program, Many Hands. Being able to provide young women from refugee backgrounds with much-needed opportunities to work with and learn from some of the city’s best, has been an incredible experience for us, the participants, and also for the people who generously volunteer their time to share their knowledge and skills. Melanie Stapleton, Director of revered floral studio cecilia fox runs the muc...h-loved floristry component of Many Hands, and has been a long-time supporter of the work that we do. Whilst the recent lockdowns have left nobody and no business unaffected, it seems that those whose work depends on events (us included ) have found it a particularly challenging time. We recently caught up with Mel to see how she was feeling about everything and what her plans were for the future. Mel’s thoughts are up on our journal, link here https://merchantrd.com/journal if you’d like to take a look xo ~ #merchantroadevents #manyhands #womensupportingwomen #theleaguewomen #womeninbusiness #womenempowerment

09.01.2022 We’ve started writing your personal messages on these pretty cards for Mother’s Day this Sunday!! So much love being sent to some exceptional women and we feel really lucky to be a part of it Our premium packs are nearly sold out, but we still have some Floral + Sweet available! For last minute orders, click the link below and pop in your details xo https://merchantrd.com/

05.01.2022 This time last week, we were supposed to have our first wedding of the year. When Victoria’s lockdown was announced on Friday, it didn’t look possible and tears were shed for what we and this special couple had been planning and looking forward to for so long However.. @zara.andtheflowers had a boot full of beautiful blooms, @firecrackerevent had already done most of their food prep and had a team of service angels at the ready and @goldandgrit had her cameras charged and i...s pretty much always prepared for anything! So, together, we worked like mad for a few intense hours to pull everything together for a small (Covid-safe), but absolutely beautiful celebration of love, before lockdown began that evening! It was made possible thanks to very generous offers to babysit last minute, and the friends and family of the couple who were sent running to get bar supplies, waited at our venue to receive orders, and moved lots of heavy furniture without complaint! It was a true labour of love for the most gorgeous couple This wedding turned what we thought was going to be a sad start to the year, in to an absolutely dreamy evening that has us so excited for what’s to come . photography @goldandgrit

04.01.2022 After the longest Winter, nature’s celebratory season is finally here and this week we can really feel the change in the air! And it seems we aren’t the only ones, with event enquiries rolling on in, we are preparing for a near future when we can gather again Hang in there, Melbourne, Summer nights together under the stars aren’t too far away! ~ Photography @goldandgrit ~... #merchantroadevents #takeitoutside #mycommontable #popupdinner #getoutandgather #tablescapes

04.01.2022 So, it’s been quite a year, and it’s not over yet!! It feels like an eternity since we’ve been able to set a table and fill your glasses We’ve spent the past few months quietly working on how we can continue to do beautiful work and create special moments for people. Whilst we have been far more fortunate than many others in our industry, (thanks in part to having the most supportive landlords ever ), our training program and ongoing work for our graduates are largely depen...dent on us hosting weddings and other large gatherings of people. So as we continue to tentatively plan for some pretty special events at the end of this year and in to 2021, we thought that we’d also create something which will complement the work we do now and in the future. We’re launching The Beautiful Bunch a next-day floral delivery service. Spreading our wings across Melbourne, we will be delivering seasonal, beautiful, more-needed-than-ever bunches of fresh blooms to your door! We are working with graduates of our past training programs to create and deliver your flowers. By strengthening the floristry component of our existing model, we’ll be able to offer the young women we work with additional transferable skills (beyond hospitality and events), adding even more value to our current training program. The work we do with women from refugee backgrounds has never been more important. The number of unemployed women in Victoria is the highest ever recorded in the history of our state. The pandemic has highlighted the gendered inequalities that already existed, and women from refugee and migrant backgrounds have been significantly and disproportionately affected by the economic impact of the virus. We hope that our new floral enterprise will give you a way to send something beautiful to your loved ones and in so doing, support young women facing some big challenges ahead. This is a huge step for us and we’d love for you to follow along as we somehow manage late-night pack downs with early morning trips to the flower markets : ) If you’d like to support us and purchase our flowers, you can follow our new baby sister here - The Beautiful Bunch xo

03.01.2022 So, we have something really exciting in the works for Mother’s Day this year!!! It involves a dream bundle of beautiful flowers, wine, coffee, hand-written love letters, and a few other things that Mums/all of us need to get by at the moment! Speaking of getting by, it has been a pretty tough time for all of the young women who we work with, almost all of whom, have lost their income and don’t qualify for support. A lot of people have been checking in to see how they’re doin...g, and to be honest, as hosting large gatherings is really the core of what we do, it has been a challenge. However, our Mother’s Day initiative will provide a much-needed opportunity for the young women we work with to earn an income for the weekend, and your support would be hugely appreciated! Details to follow in the coming days, but in the meantime, please sign-up to our newsletter (link here: https://merchantrd.us11.list-manage.com/subscribe) to be first to know. If you haven’t already bought a gift for Mother’s Day (maybe people are super organised now, we’re not sure?! ), please consider purchasing something that will be both beautiful as well as really making a big difference The gifts are also designed with all in mind, so if you’re not looking to participate in Mother’s Day, they will also be perfect for friends, lovers, family members, anyone who needs a bit of love! - photography Gold and Grit Photography #merchantroadevents #mothersday #womensupportingwomen

03.01.2022 This wedding was just meant to be Months of planning, yet only a few hours to bring it to life, before Melbourne went in to a snap lockdown in February this year. Tess and Brock and a small group of family and friends gathered in one of the most heartfelt and joyous occasions we’ve witnessed. 03.01.2022 So whilst we can’t currently travel, we CAN still bake and eat cake with recipe origins from all over the world! Basque Cheesecake was created and made famous by Santiago Rivera, owner of La Viña, in San Sebastian. It’s a big rule breaker, with a burnt top and gooey, slightly undercooked core. We served this one at a long-table dinner we hosted last Summer, and the response from guests was overwhelmingly positive, because, despite first appearances, it is absolutely delic...ious!!! We received numerous messages from guests afterwards asking what it was and could we share the chef’s recipe?? So, we’re a bit late, because up until a few weeks ago we didn’t imagine that, that was something we’d find time to dobut here we are with some time! Seems these days a lot of us are spending more time in the kitchen at home, and a few of the chefs we work with, have kindly agreed to share some of their downtime with us too. So we’ve put the recipe up in our new Journal section on our website - link, here: merchantrd.com/journal/2020/4/19/basque-cheesecake The ingredient list is super short, and whilst it’s been said to be hard to perfect, it is pretty straightforward to make. Please share with us, if you do! 02.01.2022 Florence is one of the exceptional women who support Many Hands, our paid hospitality training program. Last week, we checked in with Florence to see how things have changed for her under isolation, and how her recent sea change is going. With her customary candour and thoughtfulness, Florence shared her tips for staying sane and inspired during lock down, and her hopes for a brighter future. Excerpt below, full chat here https://merchantrd.com/journal xo xo What’s help...ing you to stay inspired? My family, especially my grandparents! They are in their 90s, and still sharp as lightning, so whenever I am feeling lonely, anxious or scattered, they always have some amazing wisdom to share. Also getting out in nature, I found myself becoming obsessed with news, Instagram, anything with a screen, which was causing everything to become more scattered. Dedicated time where I can step out of the tech world to go foraging for mushrooms, hiking, or just get some dirt on me has kept me sane(ish). My time spent going on little adventures has provoked ideas about future goals I never would have thought of. What do you feel hopeful about? That we will learn through this isolation the beauty of human interaction, empathy and compassion, far beyond what we ever appreciated before this! I hope we come together as we have in this crisis, to address a lot of other issues in our global, national and regional communities. So many beautiful things transform through crisis, which to me brings a lot of excitement, but I am optimistic we can stick on a positive pathway forward. ~ Photography Gold and Grit Photography #merchantroadevents #manyhands #womensupportingwomen #womeninbusiness #theleaguewomen
