25.01.2022 TRUST AND PATIENCE When we plant a seed, we dont dig it up the next day to see if it has grown roots. We know that growth takes time. ... We tend to the seed with water and light and wait patiently for it to sprout. Yet when it comes to making changes in our lives, we expect instant success and were easily disappointed when it doesnt happen straight away. So we give up. Anything thats worthwhile takes time and patience. Instant change doesnt last and lasting change isnt instant. Our modern lives have us obsessed with instant gratification yet the people who are patient and consistent in their actions are the ones that get results. One yoga class isnt going to magically solve our problems. One meditation session isnt going to deliver inner peace. Its the small daily actions, done consistently, over time, that deliver results. Be patient with yourself. Trust in your process. Your seed will sprout if you nurture it with time, patience and consistency. Where have you been impatient? Leave a comment below. 23.01.2022 The way we talk to ourselves reveals our relationship to ourselves. Our relationship with ourself is the foundation of all other relationships. Beneath the criticism, self doubt and loathing is often a belief that we’re not enough. ... Not good enough... Not smart enough... Not interesting enough.... Once we start believing we are enough, everything changes. You are enough. You were born enough. You will always be enough. When we change our beliefs, we change the way we think. When we change the way we think, we change the way we act. When we change the way we act, real change takes shape. All change starts with our beliefs. And many of us have limiting beliefs that we inherited from childhood and dysfunctional society. When we change our beliefs about ourself and the world, everything changes. 23.01.2022 If we dont extend kindness and compassion toward ourselves, then were missing out on an opportunity for healing and growth. Acceptance, forgiveness and gratitude will bring us much closer to achieving our goals than self hatred, criticism and judgement. Maybe its time we make peace with ourselves? ... 23.01.2022 One of the symptoms of menopause thats not often talked about is anxiety. Some women experience it more that others. The reason for the increased anxiety is that during menopause the ovaries produce less hormones and the adrenal glands step up to support the production of estrogen and progesterone. ... But if the adrenal glands are exhausted from chronic stress, they struggle to keep our hormone levels up and the result is anxiety. Yoga and meditation are proven methods to help manage anxiety. They teach us to calm our nervous system, to ground our energy and to become present in the moment. Having the skills and techniques to cope with anxiety and other uncomfortable menopause symptoms will make it easier to manage this transition. Learn more at our Yoga for Menopause workshop. 23.01.2022 LOOKS CAN BE DECEIVING How yoga FEELS is so much more important than how it looks. Yoga is an inside job. ... It works its magic from the inside out. Just like a beautiful looking apple can have a worm eating away its insides, so many people present a brave face when theyre overwhelmed with anxiety or stress. The true work of yoga is the inner work of feeling and expressing our emotions. And I think the reason people avoid this work is because deep down, many of us feel terrible on the inside but do a really good job of pretending were fine. Thats what I was like too. But theres only so long we can avoid and numb our feelings for. Eventually we must be honest with ourselves. Feeling our feelings is the key to healing. This is the work of Yoga Alchemy. Art by me

22.01.2022 We dont hesitate to recharge our phone or refuel our car when its low. Yet many of us resist rest and prefer to burn ourselves out and run on empty. And then we wonder why were stressed, anxious and overwhelmed ... Adequate rest is a key ingredient in physical and mental health. So much stress and anxiety is a result of not being able to rest properly. Rest is just as important for our health as eating our veggies, exercising and drinking water. 19.01.2022 We can go to yoga each day, use essential oils and get regular massages but if we dont deal with our emotions, we will still be stressed. The emotions that we dont feel dont go away. They show up in our body as chronic tension, stomach upsets and anxiety. The root of our stress is often unexpressed emotions. Whatever we dont express gets suppressed. ... Learning to safely feel and express our emotions is the key to healing. Learning to be honest with ourselves and what were feeling is the first step. Try asking yourself, if I wasnt feeling anxious/stressed right now, what would I be feeling? Theres usually a deeper emotion beneath the anxiety. Start there. This is the work of Yoga Alchemy. 19.01.2022 Uncertainty and lack of control can lead to feelings of anxiety. 2020 has been full of uncertainty, which is why so many people have struggled with anxiety this year. So if you've been feeling anxious, you're not alone.... But there are simple breathing techniques and yoga poses that can help us to downregulate our nervous system, relax our body and calm our mind. We've assembled a bunch of free resources to help you cultivate calm. If you have a friend or loved one who's struggling with stress, overwhelm or anxiety, please share this post. https://cultivatecalmyoga.com.au/yoga-for-anxiety/

18.01.2022 To all the parents whose kids are struggling with anxiety: I see you. I feel for you. In the last week Ive had half a dozen parents tell me, with tears in their eyes, that their kid is struggling and they dont know how to help. ... When a loved one tells us that theyre feeling anxious its important we listen and hold space for them. Expressing our fears and concerns is a way of discharging the anxious energy. But if we tell our loved one not to worry or that they have nothing to be anxious about or to just relax and calm down it only makes them feel that their feelings arent valid and cant be expressed. They may even feel shame for feeling anxious. Suppression doesnt resolve anxiety, it just makes it worse. Learning to hold space and practice acceptance of anothers negative or uncomfortable feelings is an important way of showing support. Letting our kids know that we love them anyway even when theyre anxious or depressed gives them permission to feel their uncomfortable feelings. Anxious children are often sensitive and can pick up on the energy in the house and of their parents. Our nervous systems are designed to attune to one another. We feel calm when were around calm people. We feel anxious when were around anxious people. Give you child the support they need and be a role model for: Healthy phone/social media use Healthy stress management Healthy sleep habits Healthy emotional expression. The best thing we can do to support another is to deal with our own stress and anxiety so that we can be a calm and loving presence. Art by @sinashagrai

18.01.2022 THE STRESS BUCKET We each have a stress bucket which represents our capacity to handle lifes stressors. Got work problems? Add 2 litres ... Got relationship problems? Add 2 litres Got health problems? Add a few more litres The Rona? Eventually we reach our limit, our bucket overflows and we lose our shit. We cant control what happens to us but we can do things each day to empty some stress from our bucket so that we have spare capacity to handle what life throws at us. Activating our Vagus Nerve is the key to emptying our stress bucket. It can be activated through: diaphragmatic breathing humming/chanting laughter cold showers releasing the Psoas. When we know how to activate our Vagus Nerve then we have the ability to empty our stress bucket each day so that we dont lose our shit. Learn more at the Art of Relaxation - link in comments. 18.01.2022 A different approach to anxiety: - What is the message of anxiety - What is beneath anxiety - Reframing anxiety so it’s not the enemy or something to get rid of - How my clients have healed their anxiety and so can you

17.01.2022 The emotions that we don’t express are stored in the body as muscle tension. Opposites are everywhere in the world, Yin and Yang, night and day, inhale and exhale, yet when it comes to our emotions, we have very little tolerance for the negative. It’s like we’re holding our breath, forgetting to exhale.... Ironically, when we learn to acknowledge and express our negative emotions, we expand our capacity to experience positive emotions too. Because when we numb, block or avoid ANY emotion, it reduces our ability to feel ALL emotions, including happiness. There’s nothing wrong with feeling angry, jealous, sad or guilty. Denying our negative feelings is denying reality and will only hurt us in the long run. Instead of denying negative emotions, we can find healthy ways to express emotions rather than storing them. My favourite techniques for expressing emotions are shaking my body stomping my feet Non-Linear Movement punching/kicking a bolster yelling/screaming (I do this underwater when I’m swimming so no-one thinks I’m weird) journalling talking (I’m not a big talker but it works well for extroverts to discharge their emotions). Feeling our feelings (including the negative ones) is the key to healing. Want to dive deeper into the mental and emotional realms of yoga? 17.01.2022 I believe healing is possible. But instead of looking outwards for a fix, healing comes from within. It’s a kind of acceptance. Like, ok this happened and this was how I responded, and I did the best I could with what I had.... It also involves forgiveness, particularly of ourselves. Remembering that we did the best we could in the circumstances. The healing process is a delicate balance of holding on and letting go. We can learn to let go of the pain without forgetting the lesson. Healing takes time. Healing isn’t linear. Healing occurs from the inside out. And we will know we have healed when we’re grateful for all that we’ve experienced. Gratitude can transform our wounds into wisdom and grace. This is Yoga Alchemy. See more

16.01.2022 I DONT ALWAYS WANT TO DO YOGA Confession: Im not always in the mood for yoga. But I do it anyway because I know it ALWAYS feels better AFTER. I like feeling clear and calm rather than tired and cranky. ... If I waited to feel good before I practised yoga, I would still be waiting. I view my practice like daily hygiene: I love the feeling after brushing my teeth. I love the feeling after a hot shower. I love running my hands through my washed hair. I love it when the house is clean and tidy. I dont particularly enjoy doing any of these things but I do them because they feel good AFTER. So if youre waiting until you feel good before you start practicing yoga, you might be waiting a long time. Instead, if you want to feel better in both mind and body start treating your Yoga practice like showering and brushing your teeth. You can skip a day here and there, but after that it just feels gross. Drop an emoji if you agree.

16.01.2022 We all feel good when someone is kind to us. Whether its a kind word or deed, we appreciate that another cares. Weve all experienced the benefits of an act of kindness: both as the giver and recipient. ... Yet many of us struggle to be kind to ourselves. We support, encourage and uplift our friends yet we criticise, judge and punish ourselves. Self-criticism and self-punishment dont improve our performance or make us work harder. If self-criticism worked, we wouldnt have to do it all the time. On the contrary, self-criticism hinders our performance, creates inner conflict and reinforces limiting beliefs that were bad or unworthy. We know how bad we feel around cruel and toxic people who criticise us, yet our most important relationship, the one with ourselves can be the cruelest of all. When we heal our relationship with ourselves, everything changes. If your kindness doesnt extend to yourself, then its incomplete. Start today, whats one kind thing you can do for yourself? 16.01.2022 If we treat exercise as a chore, it will always end up at the bottom of our to do list beneath the pile of ironing. Life is hard enough already. Between trying to eat our vegetables, drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, taking our vitamins, paying the bills, theres not much time for pleasure and fun. So if you feel like you have to drag your arse to the gym each week or force yourself to workout, its not going to last.... Moving our body for pleasure rather than punishment is the ultimate form of self-love. In this way, Yoga is the motivation and the reward. Many women are drawn to intense exercise as a way to manage their stress and stay on top of their game. But when were exhausted, intense exercise creates more stress hormones in the body and leads to burnout. High levels of the stress hormone cortisol actually lead to weight gain, fatigue, insomnia, inflammation, muscle tension, depression and anxiety. So if your body already has high levels of cortisol from chronic stress, then hardcore exercise is adding fuel to a very unhealthy fire. If youre super stressed, cant sleep, have lots of aches and pains and cant lose weight even when you try really hard, it might be time to ditch the gruelling exercise regime and do something pleasurable and gentle. The reason that people get stronger and lose weight with yoga is not that yoga burns more calories. The reason that people get results with yoga is that yoga feels so good that its much easier to stick with. We dont need much motivation or convincing to go to yoga because we know it makes us feel so much better physically and mentally. Drop an emoji if yoga if this resonates. 13.01.2022 Yoga withdrawals are real my friends. Dont let them get out of hand.

13.01.2022 Whenever we attempt to make a change in our lives we encounter resistance. Resistance is the biggest saboteur. Resistance is what makes us sleep in when we wanted to get up early for yoga. ... Resistance is what stops us from doing the things we want to do. Fighting resistance never works long term. The key to overcoming resistance is to look at our problem from a different angle. Resistance comes from our subconscious mind which is where we store all our memories, emotions and beliefs. Our subconscious mind is designed to keep us safe, and sometimes change can feel scary even if its in our best interest. So rather than fighting resistance, we can ask ourselves how am I benefiting from resisting this positive change? And if were honest, the answers might be confronting as we discover resistance is protecting us from - the fear of failure - the fear of success - the fear of criticism or judgment - the fear of standing out and attracting attention to ourselves - feeling unworthy or undeserving of good things. When we view resistance from the angle of keeping us safe and we appreciate how its succeeding at doing that, we no longer need it and it fades. Next time you encounter resistance, ask how its keeping you safe. When we change the way we approach resistance, we might get a different result. 12.01.2022 NEGATIVE SELF TALK The thing that’s so insidious about negative self talk is that most of the time we don’t realise we’re doing it. It’s just the same old shit-talk playing like a broken record in the background. ... And this provides the soundtrack to our days. Our body and subconscious mind listens to EVERYTHING we say. Our body and subconscious mind bears witness to the inner war and bullying. No wonder our poor body is tired! Even if we’re not paying attention, this negative self talk will put us in a bad mood, talk us out of doing the things we want to do and overrun our mind with fear. When we become aware of our internal chatter it can be quite shocking to realise how critical and mean we can be to ourselves. Yoga and meditation create the awareness of the self-talk. It’s then up to us to change the record and play a different song. This is the work of Yoga Alchemy - bringing awareness to the working of our mind and transforming the inner critic to our biggest fan. 12.01.2022 Tell your daughters how you love your body. Tell them how they must love theirs. Tell them to be proud of every bit of themselves... from their tiger stripes to the soft flesh of their thighs, whether there is a little of them or a lot, whether freckles cover their face or not, whether their curves are plentiful or slim, whether their hair is thick, curly, straight, long or short. Tell them how they inherited their ancestors souls in their smiles, that their eyes carry countries that breathed life into history, that the swing of their hips does not determine their destiny. Tell them never to listen when bodies are critiqued. Tell them every woman’s body is beautiful because every woman’s soul is unique. Words by @nikita_gill Art by @tinamariaelena

11.01.2022 Yes it hurts. But everything is temporary. Being honest with our pain requires courage, but honesty is the best policy when it comes to healing. No one ever told us how to deal with our emotions. And the mainstream message is to suppress or transcend them which is just spiritual bypassing. ... So we numb, avoid and suppress our pain which only keeps it stuck in the body. Its ok to hurt. Its ok to feel stuck. Its ok to feel lost or overwhelmed. Draw strength from the fact that everything changes. And when we entertain the belief that change is possible we plant the seed of hope. Healing takes courage. 10.01.2022 I’ve been reflecting on 2020 and our yoga community. Even though I haven’t seen some of you all year, in other ways I feel more connected than before. During the shut down earlier this year, many of you reached out to share your struggles with anxiety, loneliness, depression, overwhelm, fear and some people reached out to tell me what a blessing COVID was for them. ... It’s been an interesting year for sure. In my newsletters and on social media, I’ve tried my best to normalise the anxiety many of us felt, the lack of productivity that we experienced and the emotional roller coaster that many of us are still on. Whatever we’re going through, I think it really helps to realise we’re not alone in our struggles. So tell me friends, what was the best piece of advice you heard this year? For me, I was reminded, time and time again that our mind can make our situation 10 x worse or 10 x better - we get to choose. Leave a comment with your best advice below.

10.01.2022 Is 2021 the year that you find the courage to live your life on purpose? Is it time to end the war with yourself and heal the wounds that have been holding you back? Is it time that you listened to your soul?... For the caterpillar to transform into the butterfly, it must go into the darkness of the cocoon. Yoga Alchemy will guide you through the unknown emotional terrain. Discover the tools to do the deep internal work to create the inner transformation. In the darkness of your cocoon, you will alchemise your emotions and relationship to yourself. You will emerge from the cocoon having transformed your wounds into wisdom and grace. Yoga Alchemy is not for for the dabblers, nor is it an intellectual exercise. It’s for the genuine seekers who are willing to do the deep inner work to heal from the inside out. We will get to the root cause of anxiety, unease and inner turmoil, rather than just dealing with and masking the symptoms. Are you ready? 09.01.2022 WHY ANXIETY ISNT THE ENEMY Anxiety has many faces. It doesnt always show up as intrusive thoughts. ... Some people experience the physical signs of anxiety without connecting the dots with their unresolved emotions. The physical symptoms of anxiety include: *muscle tension *increased heart rate/palpitations *digestive problems *insomnia *difficulty breathing *nervousness/butterflies in the stomach *lump in throat/difficulty speaking *low mood *impatient/quick to anger *irritable/easily frustrated There is also situational anxiety, where we experience anxiety only concerning specific circumstances. Common examples of situational anxiety include: * Sunday anxiety as we dread the coming work week * Anxiety before a big event * Morning anxiety * Sleep anxiety While anxiety and dread may feel awful, what if it wasnt the enemy? What if there was some hidden benefit to anxiety? If you experience a lot of anxiety it might be hard to contemplate, but just for a moment, consider the POSSIBILITY that anxiety has a purpose other than making us miserable. 07.01.2022 We often downplay or diminish our own suffering because other people are doing it tough or have it worse than us. 02.01.2022 One of the tools I share with my Yoga Alchemy clients is State Change. Our State is how we feel right now. While our goals and desires are in the future, States are experienced in the now. ... When we embody a future desired State we get to feel how it would feel when our desire is met and we get to feel that way now. We only ever want something because of how it makes us feel: - relationship > love - promotion > successful - nice house > secure, successful - nice clothes > confidence - weight loss > confidence - adventures > excited/inspired One powerful way of bringing our desires closer is to feel these feelings now by changing our State. Not only does it feel really great but it also then motivates and inspires us to take action in pursuit of our desires. Try it for yourself. Visualise yourself in the not too distant future having achieved your desire and feeling grateful and excited. Feel the sensations of excitement and gratitude in your body now. By embodying our future State, we attract our desires with our subconscious mind. Drop an emoji if this resonates. Art by @sasa_elebea
