17.01.2022 Dear Annastacia Palaszczuk, Let this be my letter to you, and I pray that you see this, among the hundreds of other letters from parents, students and educators... across the Queensland state. I have seen the same question asked so many times across Facebook in the past few days, and it is so simple to answer, so why have we not yet received a reply; How is it fair that Queensland can host an AFL Grand Final, with thousands of spectators, but our NSW boarding school children cannot go home? How can you, a lady who does not have to send her child across the border, to a school, at 10 years old, sit here and tell ICPA and NSW families that you know what is best for THEIR children. These are young girls who haven’t seen their baby brother since he was born. These are children whose parents are already fighting with the drought or fires and just want to hold their child and tell them that they are alright. These are children who haven’t felt the red dirt between their toes for months on end and are forgetting the familiar smell of wheat-filled fields. These are young men whos dreams are to work for their fathers, to one day take over the family farm, but because of your lack of sympathy for our kids, they may not be able to make it home. PLEASE NOTE: These children are going from a COVID-Free location (being their school environment), directly to another COVID-Free location (their properties)! It is more dangerous for them go stay with family, especially if their only family lives in a common hotspot area, or areas under threat. It is also a risk to a child’s wellbeing and mental health, to keep them separated from family for too long. Annastacia, I am 17 years old. I am a year 12 student, and I have offered up my bedroom in my Queensland home to a young girl in my boarding house because she can’t see her mum. I am 17 years old, and I still cry at night when I miss my home and I miss my family. She is 11. 11 years old and you aren’t allowing her to go home, and if she does go home you’re going to lock her away in quarantine, or is it solitary confinement? For 14 days. Let me remind you, she is 11! When you go home tonight, and you stand in your kitchen making your own dinner and pouring yourself a cup of tea. I hope you think about the hundreds of families you have left without answers, and that are left without their children home for holidays. So dear Ms Annastacia Palaszczuk, give our rural and regional children exemptions to the border restrictions so they can go home. Bring smiles back to their faces, and put hope back into their hearts. These children are struggling too, trying to adjust to the new normalities that COVID-19 has brought to us ALL.
