25.01.2022 DID YOU KNOW: Koalas need flying foxes to survive? Some trees such as Australian eucalypts (koala favourites) only flower at night. This means they depend o...n the nocturnal activity of flying-foxes for survival. Flying foxes are major pollinators helping spread native flowers and spread seeds. NO ME, NO TREE Without flying-foxes, there would be: no food and shelter for our koalas no pristine habitat for our native birds and no magnificent forests for all of us to enjoy. Head to our website for tips on living with this incredibly important native species: www.sunshinecoast.qld.gov.au/flyingfoxes

23.01.2022 PM DECLARES NORTHERN RIVERS NATURAL DISASTER AREA Prime Minister Scott Morrison and NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian visited Lismore today to view flood damage an...d declare the Northern Rivers a natural disaster area. Deputy Mayor Neil Marks said it was terrific to see the Australian and NSW Governments take swift action and the declaration opens the way for Lismore City Council to receive significant funding under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA). He said severe weather in recent days has resulted in major damage to Lismore’s road network and city infrastructure that is expected to exceed $15 million. We would like to thank the Prime Minister and Premier for their quick action and I would like to thank our local MPs Kevin Hogan and Janelle Saffin for their assistance in lobbying for this speedy declaration, the Deputy Mayor said. We do not yet know the full cost of this weather event, but we know it will be very significant. It will take time for Council to properly assess the damage and have a clear picture of the total cost, but to know we can access disaster recovery funding is good news for the city. Severe storms, heavy rainfall and flooding since last Friday has wreaked havoc on roads in the Lismore Local Government Area, with culvert washouts, landslips and major damage to both the sealed and gravel road network. Lismore City Council has commenced urgent road repairs and has mobilised all Council crews in a major clean-up and repair effort.

22.01.2022 I had been hopeful about the IPC decision on the gas field at Narrabri, until this morning. I am angry, disgusted, crying and utterly devastated that this decis...ion has been made, despite the thousands of concerned citizens, scientific experts, ecologists etc who spoke against the Narrabri gas field. This country is being led by GovCorp - greed and corruption overrule democracy and the environment. As a Knitting Nanna I will be 'taking action' to counter this decision, for our children' and grandchildren future. Will you do the same? See more

08.01.2022 ***STATEMENT FROM CWA OF NSW IN RELATION TO THE APPROVAL OF THE NARRABRI GAS PROJECT*** The CWA of NSW is today totally disillusioned with state planning proces...ses after the Independent Planning Commission’s approval of the Santos Narrabri Gas Project. CWA of NSW CEO Danica Leys stated that it beggars belief how a project requiring 134 strict conditions can even proceed to approval. If a project needs this many conditions, it’s an indication that they need to go back to the drawing board. It doesn’t stack up. We’re concerned that compliance on conditions is severely lacking in any case. We’ve seen it in the past with mining and other extractive projects. These companies get the green light and off they go, there’s no looping back to ensure all of these conditions are upheld into the future. Rural communities once again are left with the impacts. We’re pleased to see some requirements in the IPC report relating to waste management and salt reuse or disposal. This is a significant concern and we’ll be keeping a close eye on where Santos proceed in this regard. However other impacts such as groundwater and impacts on farming activities, remain as significant concerns. We believe that the insurance issue is also yet to be adequately addressed. The Chief Scientist has directed the NSW Government to fix it, the Upper House inquiry said fix it before any gas projects can proceed. It hasn’t been addressed and yet here we are. We know the economic impacts have been inflated, we know there are still no proper assurances on the environmental impacts. With such significant community objection and now an approval with a huge amount of conditions our members are increasingly disillusioned with the whole process.

06.01.2022 The impacts on students boarding in states that are subject to border closures need to be addressed immediately. ICPA NSW Access to Education has been working ...hard on this issue and recently surveyed rural families. They found 59 percent of the respondents (out of 250) could guarantee isolation on their remote property, and the rest of the respondents (the remaining 40 percent) said they live in a council area that does not have any COVID19. ICPA NSW are arguing for essential travel criteria for these interstate boarding cases and for there to be consistency across jurisdictions. CWA of NSW totally supports this call. #nobordersforboarders Annastacia Palaszczuk MP Gladys Berejiklian ICPA Aust - Isolated Children's Parents' Association ICPA QLD INC - Isolated Children’s Parents’ Association Queensland Inc

04.01.2022 It seems only fitting that I am spending International Rural Women's Day in the archives of the Country Women's Association (CWA) of NSW, uncovering stories ab...out some of the organisation's inspiring pioneers. This woman with the deeply sad eyes is Florence Laver, who founded the very first branch of the CWA, at Crookwell in 1922. Originally from Victoria, she lived on a property not far from the town, with her husband and three sons. Florence was a pioneer in pursuing a greater say for women long before the CWA was formed. A few days ago I met her granddaughter and namesake, who showed me an ornate certificate bestowed on Florence by the Victorian Farmers Union (precursor to what eventually became the Country Party) for her "courage and initiative" in creating its first womens section in 1918. Florence was elected as a State vice president of the CWA at its first executive meeting, and devoted many hours to the organisation until her sudden death in 1935 at the age of 60. #CWA #ruralwomen Crookwell Community Hub See more

04.01.2022 The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment "has not effectively supported or overseen town water infrastructure planning since at least 2014. It does ...not have a clear regulatory approach and lacks internal procedures and data to guide its support for local water utilities that service around 1.85 million people in regional NSW" according to an audit released by the The Auditor General today. In light of the most recent crippling drought the CWA of NSW has been advocating for action on the inadequate quality of town water including drinking water in many regional areas. The drought has eased for many, but planning for an adequate standard of water for critical human needs for regional people should not be forgotten. https://www.audit.nsw.gov.au//support-for-regional-town-wa

02.01.2022 Courtney from Tabulam CWA Branch in this week's Richmond River Independent. Her story: Joining the Country Women's Association was something I'd always thought I would like to do...someday. I loved the idea of belonging to a group of likeminded women who were all about being in the kitchen and supporting their community. I enjoy cooking and baking, and had even followed the odd recipe for persimmon jam and tomato chutney when our garden was producing well, but I certainly wa...sn't Royal Show cake competition winner material! So when the president of my current branch approached me at a Get Ready Weekend, held by our local RFS, and asked me if I would consider becoming a member of the Tabulam CWA, I was interested but hesitant. Just come along to a meeting she suggested and see what you think. I'll admit I was nervous about attending that first meeting. Vicki and I got on well, but I hadn't met any of the other ladies before, and was expecting a fair amount of cliquishness particularly being so much younger than they, as well as being a relatively new member of the community. I couldn't have been more wrong, and I filled out a membership form that very day. Over the past three years I have worked alongside these ladies at fundraising events, leant my vote to help lobby for change at state level, been to several of the best Christmas parties I've ever attended, and experienced an acceptance, camaraderie and friendship that I absolutely treasure. There is often a misconception (I know I certainly had some preconceived notions!) that the CWA is only about scones and handicrafts. While these things are important - for fundraising and socialising alike - being a top-notch home cook, prolific preserver or award winning baker is not required for membership. There are a couple of members within my branch who don't even enjoy cooking! However, they are passionate about creating positive change in our community, which is really what the CWA is all about. From supporting or organising local events, to providing a voice to government, to stepping up in times of disaster, the Country Women's Association works to advocate for and empower women, families and communities; and ultimately, that is why I am incredibly proud to be a part of it. Courtney Thomas, Tabulam CWA Branch
