25.01.2022 Ave, Ave, Ave Maria! Today, the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary is the only Marian feast to be a Holy Day of Obligation, although this event is not mentioned in scripture. Mary appears in the New Testament in the Nativity story, the visitation to Elizabeth, the presentation of Jesus in the temple, the finding of Jesus in the temple, at the marriage at Cana, and at the Crucifixion.Of the many apparitions of Mary, only seven have been approved by the Univ...ersal Church. The 19th Century saw most of these: the Miraculous Medal to Catherine Laboure,in 1830, at La Salette in 1846, to Bernadette at Lourdes in 1858, to a crowd of people at Knock in 1879, and of course to the three children of Fatima in 1917.In 1854,the Pope named Mary as the Immaculate Conception. The dogma of the Assumption was proclaimed by Pope Pius XII in 1950.Devotion to Mary has risen and fallen over the ages. with the 1950s being the peak, especially with devotion to the Rosary. At this time Catholics were often accused of idolatry. Tradition has it that after the Ascension, Mary lived with the Apostle John, for twelve years, helping the Apostles and praying for the conversion of the world. On the third day after her death, the Apostles gathered around her tomb and found it empty. They believed that her body had been assumed into heaven, by the grace of God. Our daily prayer is: Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now,and at the hour of our death,We have comfidence that our holy Mother will pray for us. See more

25.01.2022 Why were Moses and Elijah present at the Transfiguration? Both of the propherts had asked to see the face of God, but God was manifested in the burning bush and in the gentle breeze. Now, with the disciples Peter, James and John, they were able to see God face to face, in Jesus. As we gaze on your kingly brightness, so our faces display your likeness, Ever changing from glory to glory, mirrored here may our lives tell your story, Shine on me. Shine on Me. Shine Jesus shine, f...ill this land with the Father's glory, Blaze, Spirit, blaze, set our hearts on fire. Flow, river , flow, flood the nations with grace and mercy; Send forth your Word, Lord, and let there be light. (Graham Kendrick) See more

24.01.2022 Saint of the Day. Saint Dominic's life spanned the12th,13th centuries, during which he instituted the Order of Preachers. At the time there was a huge following in France for a heresy, Albergentianism, which taught that all material things, especially the human body were evil.Mary appeared to Dominic telling him to pray the Rosary as a meditation on the important times in the life of Jesus. Previously, the 150 Hail Marys divided by the Lord's Prayer were not named as Myster...ies, and were recited more as a mantra The Rosary gradually evolved into the form we use today: Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious Mysteries, and the new Mysteries of Light, added by Pope John Paul II in 2002. Back to the 13th century. There was to be a huge battle between the Catholics, with an army of 1,500 and the Albergentians army of 30,000.The night before the battle, the Albergentians indulged in drunkenness and debauchery, and the Catholics prayed the Rosary, and were victorious. That was more or less the end of the heresy, and the Dominicans travelled throughout France, preaching, to bring the people back to the Church. The Rosary may not be as popular as in the past, but many, including myself, find it very comforting in times of hardship and worry. Our Lady of the Rosary, pray for the people of the world as we face this terrible pandemic, See more

24.01.2022 I always feel for the virtuous young rich man who felt he couldn't give up all his wealth to follow Jesus. We don't know his story. He may have been the only son of a rich land holder, who was expected to carry on the family business,We don't know!. I like to think that he continued to live a good life, being generous to the poor, acting with justice to his employees, kind and loving to his wife, teaching his children to act justly.I just hope that he didn't make a god of his wealth. Jesus had said, "If you wish to be perfect......" and he went away very sad. Few of us reach perfection. Will you come and follow me if I but call your name? Will you go where you don't know and never be the same:? Will you let my love be shown;will you let my name be known? Will you let my my life be grown in you and you in me?

22.01.2022 " It is not right to take the food from the children and throw it to the dogs." Matthew 15:21-28.We are always shocked when we hear those words from Jesus to the Canaanite woman, when she's begging for her daughter's life. How can he be so unkind? This is the time when Jesus moves on from just being the Messiah to the Jews but to the whole world. The women called him Son of David. She recognised who he was, even though some of the disciples hadn't yet really understood.Jesus d...ecided to meet her where she was and whoever she was.We are all the people of God, despite our differences. We must be prepared to learn from others and not think of "us" and "them".On this planet we are all "us", whether we are fighting climate change or a pandemic. It is love and respect for one another that will save us."God saw all that he had created, and indeed it was very good." That includes us. See more

21.01.2022 "Stay awake, because you do not know either the day or the hour" Matthew: 23:13. I like to think I am like the wise bridesmaids, always on the alert. As Christians, every aspect of our lives should be looking forward to when the Bridegroom calls us, In this parable, Jesus is telling us that it's not living the Christian life if we go to Sunday Mass and then criticise what our neighbour is wearing, or faking our Tax Return, or ignoring the Vinnies Appeal for the poor.To be re...ady for the "hour", we just need to remember that Jesus is with us always. It's not always easy, but if we are aware of God's presence in all of creation,we'll be well on the way to "glory". Be still for the presence of the Lord is moving in this place. He comes to cleanse and heal, to minister his grace. No work too hard for him, in faith receive from him, Be still for the power of the Lord, is moving in this place. See more

21.01.2022 The Feast of the Queenship of Mary. Immaculate Mary, your praises we sing, You reign now in heaven with Jesus our King. Ave, ave, ave Maria. Ave, ave, ave Maria, In glory forever now close to your Son.... All ages will praise you for what Gid has done. Ave, ave, ave Maria. Ave, ave, ave Matia. See more

21.01.2022 Matthew 22:37. The Golden Rule: "You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your mind and you must love your neighbour as yourself." How often have I heard it ? I have to ask myself,do I really live it out in my life.Thousands of secular secular songs have been written about LOVE. I like this one by John Denver, Think of Love as God. Perhaps Love is like a resting place, a shelter from the storm. Love exists to give you comfort..., is there to keep you warm. And in those times of trouble, when you seem all alone, The memory of Love will bring you home. Perhaps Love is like a window, perhaps an open door, Love invites you to come closer, Love wants to show you more. And even if you lose yourself and don't know what to do, The memory of Love will see you through. God is Love and all love comes from God. See more

20.01.2022 St Monica lived a long time age, from 331 to 387, but the problems she faced are still happening today. As a young woman she had a drinking problem which she overcame through prayer. As a Chrstian married to a pagan life was not easy. Then her brilliant son, Augustine was a source of much grief because of his immoral life.Through all of this, Monica prayed, with confidence, patience, perseverence and total trust in God, knowing that in God's time, all would be well. Her husband did convert to Christianity; Augustine would become a Doctor of the Church and Father of the Church. People ask Monica to pray for them, because of, difficult marriages, disappointing children, unfaithfulness, abuse and for the conversion of dear ones.St Monica be with us in the problems of life, and help us to be to patient and put our trust in God.

15.01.2022 Today's parable of people refusing an invitation from the King to come to a feast, isn't easy. I think most of us would happily accept such an invitation, and make sure we were wearing suitable clothes. But when God invites people to be a part of his Body on earth, the Church, a great number find something better to do. They are not bad people. They may be living the "Christian Life". It's just that being a part of the worshipping community isn't a priority. Perhaps we need to... look at our worshipping community and our rituals, and see why so many of the Baptised do not want to come.Today is the Feast of St Bernard, who had a great devotion to Mary. His prayer The Memorare contains the line: "Inspired with confidence, I fly to you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother." Let's ask Mary to pray that all of those invited to her Son's feast, will reply. " I accept with pleasure". See more

14.01.2022 He is probably well known in France, but I had never heard of today's saint, John Eudes. He was born the son of a farmer in Normandy, in 1601.During the terrible plagues of 1627 to 1631, he volunteered to care for the stricken in his diocese, and so that he wouldn't infect his brother priests. he lived in a huge barrel in the middle of a field.Like many saints, he had disagreements with his bishops, particularly on the proper and practical education of priests, and despite op...position, founded several seminaries. He was disturbed by the plight of prostitutes who sought to escape their miserable lives, and established shelter for them, and established the Sisiters of Charity of the Refuge to care for them. The basis of his faith was care for others: his parishioners, the plague stricken people, those preparing for the priesthood and prostitutes. St John Eudes, pray for us in this time of pandemic. See more

13.01.2022 In Matthew's Gospel today, Jesus teaches how to deal with someone who is doing the wrong thing, His advise is, "have it out with him," and if that doesn't work, "take someone else with you to talk to him". If that fails,,and if he still won't listen, report him to the community. If he still refuses to listen, treat him as an outcast. The community is better off without him. This makes me think of the very selfish minority in Victoria who refuse to abide by the rules to get o...n top of COVID, and won't wear a mask or self isolate. They say it is against their freedom of choice. Freedom is not the power of doing what we like, but doing what we ought.Freedom doesn't give us the right to be a nuisance to other people.Certain freedoms have to be sacrificed for the sake of the greater good. That's just the way it is in times of crisis. Lord Jesus, you came to set us free. Help us to use that freedom for the good of all. See more

12.01.2022 In today's first reading, 2 Corinthians 9 :7, Paul tells us: "Each should give what he has decided in his own mind, not grudgingly or because he is made to, for God loves a cheerful giver". Whether we are giving of our time, energy or material possesssions, may we do so of our own free will, because we find genuine pleasure in sharing and being generous to others. And let's remember: a smile, a cheery wave or a phone call don't cost much, but make a lot of difference to a lonely person, and , as an added bonus, God loves us!

11.01.2022 Romans 11:33-36."All that exists comes from God, all is by God and all is for God. To God be the glory for ever. Amen." Such beautiful words from Paul, I think these words help us to appreciate the wonders of creation, large and small. It's too windy today to go for a walk, so I did a bit of gardening, and just in my small courtyard, I thought of the huge variety of forms, shapes and colours. And there in the middle was a wonderful cobweb, so symmetrical, so delicate, yet so strong. To God be the glory for the beauty of our planet, Mother Earth, our home, and may we look after it, so that generations to come will be able to say "Glory to God" for all things large and small..

10.01.2022 St Clare of Assisi. I remember in the beautiful movie, Brother Sun, Sister Moon, Clare running through a golden field to join Francis at San Damiano.Clare's wealthy father wanted her to marry at the age of 15,but after hearing Francis speak she chose the religious life by running away from home.Francis took her to the Benedictine convent, where she was soon joined by her sister Agnes and others. When they began their order on the convent at San Domiano, now known as the Poor C...lares.They chose a simple life of great poverty, and complete seclusion from the world. At first, they went barefoot, slept on the ground and observed almost complete silence. But under the guidance of Francis, her lifelong friend, these practices were modified.Clare was the first woman to write the Rule for her order.Previously, the Rules were always written by men. She was known for her loving care of the sick, and often washed the feet of her sisters. St Clare , pray for all the people suffering from the pandemic. See more

08.01.2022 Growing up in the times of the French revolution, our Saint of the Day, John Vianney, witnessed the persecution of the church. and was determined to become a priest,to bring the people back to God, even though he had little formal education and struggled with Latin,He was appointed to a remote small village Ars-sur-Formans, a real backwater. However, this simple priest, who really loved his people, understood that they needed simple homilies they could relate to. He spent hou...rs in the Confessional, treating the penitants with gentle love and mercy. Hundreds of people travelled to see the Cure d'Ars, and although he became famous, he retained his humble attitude, always aware of his short-comings.Today's Gospel says :"Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him." John Vianney is the Patron Saint of priests, and we pray they he will ask Jesus to stretch out his hand to many young men who are considering a vocation. See more

06.01.2022 Catholic Women's League State of Queensland has made a donation of $600 to an appeal for aid to the people of Lebanon. Keep them in your prayers. They experienced decades of conflict even before this disaster.

03.01.2022 In Matthew 23:23-26, we hear how Jesus really got stuck into the Scribes and Pharisees, calling them out for being hypocrites, saying they gave the appearance of being good men,but were really corrupt. They carriied out all the rites and rituals, and obeyed the regulations, but there was no place in their hearts for compassion, mercy and love. They were worried about self preservation and self concern over the good of others.Unfortunately, this seems all too familiar to us,Hopefully that is now behind us in the Catholic Church in Australia, but the harm done is immeasureable. Our Sunday Eucharist prepares us for the week ahead, enhancing the power of the Holy Spirit within us,It is really hypocritical if we participate in the Eucharist, and ignore the Dismissal: Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life.

02.01.2022 "The boat was battling a heavy sea, for there was a headwind." What are the heavy seas and headwinds in our lives? If we live lomg enough, we're sure to experience emotional, mental, financial, physical, family and spiritual ups and downs. At the present time we have the pandemic to worry about. Like the disciples, we may not have been able to make any headway.Did we always remember that Christ is always with us? Did we try to go it alone? Did we go to God in prayer? This Gosp...el is reminding us that Christ will be there for us, often in the help of another person, if we just swallow our pride and say, "I can't do it alone." Sometimes we will find the answer in nature, just as Elijah found God in the gentle breeze.Jesus didn't say much to poor Peter,as he suddenly thought he was going to drown. He said," Courage, it is I, do not be afraid, oh man of little faith, Why did you doubt?" All will be well, and all manner of things will be well.( Julian of Norwich) See more

02.01.2022 Mary MacKillop, our saint. What an amazing women! We all know her story of how she was afflicted by sickness, poverty, misunderstanding by bishops, her friend Fr Tennison Wood, and even her own sisters. She remained undaunted in the pursuit of what God asked of her.I like this encouraging quote from Mary, which I think is particularly apt in these troubled times. "We must let no obstacle deter us from proceeding with courage in the path marked out for us.It may sometimes be dark and full of winding ways, but a beautiful bright light shines at the end of this parh and a few more windings will bring us to it." St Mary of the Cross, pray for the people of Victoria that they will be patient as they fight the corona virus. St Mary of the Cross, pray for the people of Lebanon in this time of tragedy.

01.01.2022 We pray,God of all people, that your Spirit of healing be with the people of Lebanon at this time. May the terrifying sounds of explosions, ambulance sirens and cries of those trapped in buidings give way to sounds of courage and hope. May the smell of acrid smoke give way to a renewed sense of God's loving presence and strength. May there be real cooperation between rescue workers, government personnel and civilians so that true justice and peace will break through for all, a...nd people's deep suffering alleviated. Our Lady of Lebanon, pray for all who suffer in Beirut. We ask this through Christ our Lord, Amen. (Thank you to the Brigidine Sisters for this prayer). See more

01.01.2022 In Matthew 18:23, we hear the parable of the servant whose debts were forgiven by his merciful master, but then went out and demanded that a fellow servant, who owed him money, pay up or be thrown into prison. Every day, we ask of God, "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us". We know that God will treat us graciously and forgive us, but what about us? Are we willing to do the same?Others may offend us, People are not perfect.People will act unkindly, or take unfair advantage of us.It is natural to want to get even, or to completely dismiss those people from our lives. It even happens in families, which is so sad. It's difficult to be like God.To be in harmony with God and creation, we need to be in harmony with others. Jesus, this is hard. Walk with us and help us to be more like you, and be forgiving.
