Fake celebrity endorsements with promises of get rich quick through low risk investments are commonly seen as are investments in crypto currencies and betting prediction software. Professional looking websites, glossy brochures and platforms that actually make it appear that your initial investment is growing rapidly leads you to investing more money, which you will never see. Be wary of unsolicited contact or ads on social media. Scammers will often request you to act urgently and keep things quiet. 25.01.2022 Case Study 2 - Wangiri scams Wangiri is Japanese and means once and cut. Have you ever looked at your phone and noticed a missed call from an odd overseas location? The scammers will ring once and hang up and hope you return the call. They make a profit as the return number is a premium number. The longer you stay on the line, the more money they make!... Best just to delete and block.

24.01.2022 Case Study 1 Remote Access Scams. You are browsing the internet when all of a sudden you see a pop-up stating that you have a virus. The page cannot be closed. There is a 1800 number to call for help so you do. ... The people on the phone are very helpful and request access to your machine to fix the issue. They remove the virus for you and all you need to do now is pay them for their support. This is of course scam, not only do they receive a payment, when they are on your machine they also steal your personal information or put more malware on your machine. 20.01.2022 Black Friday and Cyber Monday are almost upon us, and with Christmas fast approaching, this provides scammers and fraudsters the perfect opportunity to try to obtain your personal information or payment credentials. This year its expected that activity will increase, with scammers being more sophisticated in their techniques. Be careful of the following: - Too good to be true deals offered through social media platforms such as Facebook or Twitter... - Deals that request you share them to unlock further discounts - Domain impersonation (E.G. www.cybawere.com.au instead of www.cybaware.com.au), particularly of big name stores (Target, Walmart.....Cybaware) - Heavily discounted brand or luxury items - if Apple goods or Rayban sunglasses are 90% off, its a scam! - Directions to install a web browser extension before proceeding to the website Stay click safe for our scam free shopping tips: - Googles search for the official website rather than clicking on a link through social media - Look out for the https in the web address rather than just http - Check the domain name carefully to be sure you are going to the correct site - Dont install a browser extension if asked to, this could install Malware onto your device - Check that websites offer payment options such as Paypal or Credit cards rather than payments to be made to bank accounts via transfer - Be careful of ads or contact that occurs through social media via unknown sources - Be wary of limited time or one time only offers. 19.01.2022 With the news that Australia is under a major cyber attack from an unknown entity targeting both public and private sector organisations, what steps can you take to help protect yourself and your business? 1. Regularly change your passwords - if your login credentials are stored at a third party organisation and these are hacked, the hackers now have your login details. And if you use these same login details elsewhere (Facebook and other social media, banking etc), the hacke...rs will now be able to access your accounts on these sites.... So 2. Use different passwords for different sites. If your login details are compromised somewhere, limit the exposure! 3. Update your software - ensure all your devices have the latest security patches. This will help protect your infrastructure. 4. Review what personal information you have stored and how you protect it. Criminal groups that gain access to your devices will look for commercially sensitive or personal information to steal. Remove it or keep it password protected.... And 5. Utilise multi factor authentication. Limiting access to one access method (username/PW) places you at risk. Adding another layer of security (SMS or token) will stop hackers gaining access. 17.01.2022 Case Study 3 - Phishing Attackers follow the trends and also realise that a lot of people now use services with online billing such as Netflix. Their favourite is when the grandparents get online and do not really know how these services work.... Scammers will use this to their advantage creating urgency to have you input data such as credit card details and login information. If ever in doubt, call the company, login through verified channels or email support teams to confirm before acting.

16.01.2022 Case Study 4 - Banking Trojans Banking trojans are a group of viruses which are unknowingly downloaded attached to illegal movies and tv-series, free software and from phishing, or spam emails. It will hide on your computer / phone and activate when you access your banks app or website.... It could overlay the screen to capture credentials or intercept the communication to your bank and change details to a new recipient. Always use antivirus software on your machines, including your phone and only use verified app stores. Keep an eye on anomalies such as loading pages and always check the sms authorisation details when paying new people.

09.01.2022 Case Study 5 - Classified Scams Buyers You see a TV advertised for sale, just out of the box and at an amazing price. There are pictures of the item and the registered seller is very conversational. The seller then claims they are interstate or overseas but can get the item to you if you pay for freight or shipping and they send you a link. You pay the cost, as you think, I am getting the TV without having to pay for it first so there is no risk. Unfortunately the tv never ar...rives and the freight company paid was a fake. Sellers You have advertised your car online and get a response in the first few days. They want to buy the car at the price advertised however are interstate. The scammers say they will pay you more for the car if you could set up the cost of delivery or pay a small insurance fee. They then send you a link to the company they use. Once you have paid it goes cold and you never hear from them again. There is some great advice here to know if you have been scammed
