24.01.2022 Research shows that talking face to face about their problems does not even rank in the Top 10 methods of coping for most men. Included in the top 10 are: Exercise... Keeping busy Having a laugh Working on a major project Do any of these sound like you? Congratulations! You have found your own coping methods and you are not alone. In fact, you are just like a lot of other men

24.01.2022 A great read for holiday break. The personal search for happiness, it’s definiton, and how to achieve more of it is THE driving force behind the majority of the decisions to purchase a ticket to our Camps. Some men are in a great place, loving life and looking for more.... Others are in a world of pain and looking for support and answers. Most are somewhere in between. How are you going in each of the 4 areas below? What would you like more of? What have you got sorted? How did you get to this point? Enjoy the read

23.01.2022 Talking isn’t the preferred way that most men cope. It’s important to remember that talking isn’t the only coping mechanism for mental stress. Eat healthily (54.2%) 2. Keep myself busy (50.1%) 3. Exercise (44.9%) 4. Use humour to reframe thoughts/feelings (41.1) 5. Do something for someone else (35.7%) 6. Spend time with a pet (34.8%) 7. Notice my thoughts and change my perspective (30.5%) The blokes who come to our camps get to do 9 of these top 10 throughout the weekend with us. The only one we are missing from our camp experience so far is #6 - and one day we absolutely will have a mascot to join us all. So next time you feel (or are made to feel) guilty about not wanting to "talk about it", just remember that is totally normal for most men. If you like reading our posts we'd love you to tag a mate and share our content. If you'd like to know more about the topics we cover or if you'd really just like a weekend away on your bike with a great bunch of blokes - you should come to a camp. 18.01.2022 Empathy is putting yourself in someone else's position and feeling what they must be feeling. It is the ability to emotionally understand what other people feel see things from their point of view, ... and imagine yourself in their place. Research has found that there are gender differences in the experience and expression of empathy - although these findings are somewhat mixed. Women score higher on empathy tests, and studies suggest that women tend to feel more cognitive empathy than men. Cognitive empathy involves being able to understand another person's mental state and what they might be thinking in response to the situation. The picture below is a perfect example of empathy in action at one of our Camps. Our Crew member Ro was riding alongside our Leadership Coach Paul when he got a puncture. Ro understood that Paul would most likely be feeling a bit stressed and disappointed as a result and so he jumped straight into action to help out. Not long after, our support vehicle driver - Phil - also came along to help out. Paul did not have to ask for help or explain a single thing. The boys knew exactly how he was feeling and then did the bloke thing - they 'fixed it'! We cover Empathy in our Resilience Workshop at the Camp on Day 1. It's something that a lot of men struggle with and have to try really hard to get better at. We understand. And we help you with strategies to improve. But we don't judge you. Because we're all men. We get it. 17.01.2022 It’s amazing how good a conversation can be with a mate on a long ride isn’t it! Studies have shown that men often prefer this ‘shoulder to shoulder’ form of communication as opposed to the ‘face to face’ style that is regularly preferred and promoted by women. It’s one of the major differences between the sexes.... Next time you’ve got something you need to ‘get off your chest’ or talk through - call a mate and go for a ride. If it works for you - that’s all that matters. If you’ve got a mate whose going through tough times at the moment - call him and organise a ride. That could be all he needs to help get him through another day. 15.01.2022 Change requires tension and discomfort. If you want to grow, you’ve got to be proactive. No one gets better by accident. It takes work...... Growth involves facing your fears and being open to learning - new behaviours, new habits. A different perspective that could lead to a change in response and thus, a change in outcomes. The fastest way to get to growth is to focus ONLY on what you can control. Growth comes when you focus on YOU. When you take responsibility for your thoughts and behaviours and the results of these. When you understand and critique your worldview - and consider alternatives to it. Where you sit in life right now is the result of the decisions you’ve made along the way and the consequences of them - good, bad and indifferent. The first step toward lasting change is in accepting this fact. Your life and state of health are the result of the compounding effects of your behaviours, habits and beliefs. Have a good hard look at both of the pictures in this post. What zone are you in now? How’s it working for you? What do you spend the majority of your time thinking about - things you can control, or things that concern you? Are you proactively working toward a vision of your future OR constantly reacting to things that you can’t change? Is it time for you to think more deeply about this kind of stuff and maybe get to work on a better YOU? Join us. On The Road To Better

15.01.2022 A 2007 National survey of Mental Health and wellbeing found that women with mental health disorders are around 50% more likely to access services than men. This is not likely to have changed in the last 13 years. In fact, the most recent results show that 7 of 9 suicides in Australia are men. The vast majority of these men are of working age (25-64).... How do we address this at cycleWELL? Our camps help to reduce the stigma and take the complexity out of accessing mental health services. We have a mental health partner organisation (Mens Toolbox) who specialise in Mens Mental Health. They are at every Camp. Mens Toolbox provide basic mental health screenings for every attendee and run mental health, relationship and communication skills workshops at the Camps. We also have a registered Psychologist - Chris - who is part of our crew. He does all the rides with us, takes workshops on depression and anxiety and is available for a "chat" at any stage throughout the weekend if you want. It's very casual whilst still being professional. Chris has over 25 years of experience... Both Chris and Mens Toolbox also offer (Medicare Funded) Mental Health Care Plans to Camp attendees and can make that process very simple. Further to this, actively managing your mental health (and seeking help when needed) is promoted as something that all men should do as part of their everyday plan. It’s seen as a non-negotiable part of life that is equally as important as exercise and nutrition - it's part of your holistic approach to being on your own Road To Better... 12.01.2022 What are the benefits of mindfulness practice? Improved self-control, greater objectivity, ... increased tolerance, improved concentration mental clarity stress reduction...and the list goes on! The term "mindfulness" has been used to refer to: a psychological state of awareness, the practices that promote this awareness, a mode of processing information and a character trait. We cover various mindfulness practices at our Camp including Yoga, guided meditation and mindful eating! It's always amazing to see how much our Camp attendees enjoy our Yoga and guided meditation sessions when they have the opportunity to do them with us. In the majority of cases it is the first time these men have given it a try and they are often astounded at the results they experience in such a short time. Gratitude, Empathy and Mindfulness are the 3 science backed practices that we promote and coach at our Camps. Does this mix sound familiar? Maybe it's because you have come across 'The Resilience Project' at some stage? If not - check them out: https://theresilienceproject.com.au/ To learn more about the science behind mindfulness: https://www.apa.org/monitor/2012/07-08/ce-corner To join us at our next camp in March 2021: https://www.cyclewell.com.au/buy-ti/road-to-better-mar-2021

11.01.2022 Researchers have consistently found sex differences from an early age that show boys and men tending towards friendships built on an external shared interest, activity or goal - like riding your bike up a mountain! This concept is best known in Australia through the men’s sheds movement which has adopted the motto men don’t speak face to face, they speak shoulder to shoulder. The idea that men tend to engage in conversation and social connection ‘side by side’ more than wom...en, who tend to engage ‘face to face’ emerged in the 1970s in research into same-sex friendships. In 2008, Dr Geoffrey Greif conducted a study of 400 men and 100 women for his book Buddy System, Understanding Male Friendships. The book aimed to dispel the myth that men don't have real friends and mapped what their friendships look like over the lifespan. He highlighted the link between male friendship and men’s health and reaffirmed the theory ‘shoulder to shoulder’ style of male friendship was real. How does cycleWELL accommodate this? Our focus is Road Cycling. Road cycling is done side-by-side in bunches more so than any of the other popular forms of cycling. At our Camps we provide multiple opportunities for men to talk ‘shoulder-to-shoulder’ on our group training rides. These conversations are sometimes prompted (by the cycleWELL team) to focus on specific topics, but equally, there are plenty of opportunities for freestyle conversations that build all important and often lasting connection between camp attendees. At cycleWELL we know that you don't have to be looking your mate in the eye, sitting opposite him in a quiet corner of the room to have a meaningful conversation... 08.01.2022 The following 10 masculine behaviours and traditions can be building blocks for promoting good mental health in men and boys: 1. male relational styles 2. generative fatherhood 3. male ways of caring... 4. male self-reliance 5. the worker-provider tradition of husbands and fathers 6. male daring, courage, and risk taking 7. the group orientation of boys and men 8. the humanitarian service of fraternal organisations 9. men's use of humour 10. male heroism. The approach that places the greatest focus on understanding the positive impact that masculinity can have on men’s mental health is probably the Positive Psychology/Positive Masculinity (PPPM) model. This approach encourages mental health professionals to recognise and promote each of the behaviours listed above. How do we address and use this knowledge in our Camps? By providing a culture and communication style at our camps that understands and promotes these 10 behaviours. The tone and culture at our camps is very much in-line with these behaviours. Our camps are run by men, for men. We are not overtly and restrictively ‘Politically Correct’. We are a safe place where men can be men without fear of inadvertently offending... We have a laugh at ourselves and each other. We ride as a group and promote the courage to reach for aspirational goals on and off the bike. We talk about the evolving role of men in society and respect the traditional roles that many men have played thus far in their lives. Without judgement. We are truly unique. That's why blokes love coming to our Camps. Join us in 2021 on The Road To Better. https://www.cyclewell.com.au/vic-bright-mar-2021-camp-itine Get your Ticket now!

07.01.2022 A lack of social connections is known to be bad for our physical and mental health 1 in 4 Aussie men lack these strong social connections. Research has found that lacking social connection can be as damaging to your health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day. ... Having a good social support network is linked to better mental health. A 2014 Beyond Blue/Movember study into men’s social connections found that men with very high levels of psychological distress were four times more likely to have low levels of social support, when compared with men experiencing low levels of psychological distress (49% v 12%). How does cycleWELL address this? By providing a physical (through our Camps and group rides) and online (through our FaceBrook Group) community that is positive and supportive and that has a culture and communication style that understands and is unashamedly built for men. 05.01.2022 **READ THIS WHOLE POST PLEASE** Below is the 7 Elements Life Planning Tool This is the tool that we use and teach at our Camps. ... It was created by our leadership coach Paul O'Brien and has been used with hundreds of men across many industries. It helps to provide a structure and focus for goal-setting. We help you to create values-based goals at our Camps. How? By using the Positive Psychology tool - VIA (Values In Action) and by giving you the time and space to think about what values matter to you. You can find the FREE VIA Test here: https://www.viacharacter.org/ When you come to a camp you get the opportunity to create values based goals around any or all of the 7 Elements. You will write them down. You will share one of them with the group. You will find someone at the Camp or in your network of friends and family who you will also share some of your goals with and you will ask them to keep you accountable. Why? Because when you write a goal down AND share it you are far more likely to achieve it. What we do is NOT rocket science. It IS proven. It IS backed by science. It IS easy to apply in 'the real world'. It works.
