20.01.2022 Whos your insurance company? Late last month, Cycling Australia (CA) announced that the cost of its insurance was set to go up. The insurance company behind CAs offering had increased its price by 46%, primarily due to increased claims. CA said that it was not in a financial position to absorb the full cost of the insurance increase and that while it would do what it could, the balance of the increase will either be passed through in increased member fees or absorbed... by the relevant state or territory association. According to CA, it would be up to each state and territory body to decide how much (if any) of the price hike they would cover, or whether the increase would be passed on to members. With the price rise about to come into effect, CyclingTips reached out to each state and territory body to see what theyve got planned. While there are differences in how each organisation plans to handle this challenge, there are some common themes that come through in the responses youll read below.

17.01.2022 In what is rapidly becoming an annual tradition, a mountain biker has jumped over the Tour de France peloton. 19-year-old Valentin Anouilh claimed this years honor as he gapped the yellow jersey on yesterdays stage 10 between Saint-Flour and Albi. The video above has multiple angles of his huck that is pretty sizable at 16 meters. The first rider recorded doing the peloton huck was Dave Watson, who crashed on the landing in 2002. Since then, Alexis Bosson and Roman Marandet... have both given it a go, while Szymon Godziek backflipped over the Tour de Pologne on a road bike in 2017. Valentin Anouilh isnt the only mountain biker who got some air time at this Tour de France though. Lucas Bruder made it on to the live broadcast as he "led" the race doing a wheelie on Stage 7. I started thinking about this, since so many cyclists are more concerned with weight, especially here in Southern California. Just go to one of our local criterium races and you will hear the local racers talking about the weight of their new bike.... Hey John, I just got this new and it only weighs 14.877 pounds. Bill, my new [insert manufacturer and model here] bike only weighs 14.587 pounds. Looking at the aero versus weight question as a coach, its obvious to me that aerodynamics is more important than weight. So then why do all cyclists compete for bragging rights as to who has the lightest bicycle? Shouldnt it be who has the fastest bicycle, or, more accurately, who is the fastest by being the most efficient?

In road races, sipping on fluid regularly throughout the event will help to top up fluid levels. During short criteriums and time-trials, usually no fluids are ...carried to reduce bike weight so pre-event hydration is particularly important, especially if hot. Water is suitable for short sessions, but in long events or in hot weather, sports drinks helps to simultaneously replace carbohydrate and electrolytes. 02.01.2022 Two Tour de France rookies stole the show on the first mountain stage, with Dylan Teuns of Belgium winning Stage 6 and Giulio Ciccone of Italy taking the overall race lead on Thursday. Geraint Thomas, the defending champion, also rode strongly, going some way to answer questions about his fitness after he crashed out of the Tour de Suisse in June. Thomas rode in fourth at the top of the terrible climb to the Planche des Belles Filles ski station in the woody Vosges mountains of eastern France. But the severity of the ascent, with a final 24 percent incline and an unpaved section that kicked up clouds of dust, torpedoed other main contenders for overall victory in Paris on July 28.

We chatted before the start of Wednesdays 11th stage start in Albi. It was spontaneous, informal . . . banter that tends to build in a three-week Tour. Dennis, 29, spoke with optimism, assuredness and ambition of his cycling goals. I felt happy for him. Fast forward to Thursday, midway into stage 12 from Toulouse to Bagneres de Bigorre in the Pyrenees. Suddenly, Dennis abandons the Tour. How a Tour can turn on its head, especially for one individual. It never ceases to amaze. Why Dennis came to a halt after about 80km at the official feed zone remained a mystery. He travelled in the car of a team masseur to the finish, where he went directly into the confines of his Bahrain-Merida team bus. He waited inside for one hour before leaving with his agent and the teams media officer on either side without offering comment. The mystery continued as the sun finally set behind the Pyrenees.....
