21.01.2022 Another National Orchid Extravaganza over and another successful weekend had by all. We had over 1200 visitors to the show over the three days! Not a bad achievement for a relatively small orchid club.

21.01.2022 Champion Other Genera, Champion Dendrobium, Den Hilda Poxon Joan Martin.

19.01.2022 It is with great sadness that we convey the news that Alvin Bryant passed away this morning after a battle with cancer. Alvin was a huge supporter of the Cymbidium Club in its early days and is a legend in the orchid community. Our thoughts are with Greg, Michelle and all the family at this very sad time.

09.01.2022 As the Advertisers gardening writer for nearly 30 years, and host of ABC radios talkback gardening, Jon Lamb also has a weekly Good Gardening e-newsletter. ...Its full of handy tips and gardening information, and last weeks edition featured spring-flowering orchids. Heres what Jon had to say While the weather remains cool, August is the time to prepare your spring flowering orchids. Spring flowering cymbidiums should now have well developed flower spikes. These will need to be staked and tied in their final position. Zygopetalum types may be in flower or showing flower spikes after their autumn display. Recent strong winds has helped with pest control but may have dislodged plants from their resting place. Despite continuous drizzly conditions, plants may not have received all the water they need, so check that your growing medium has not dried out. Next, check shade cloth for damage and carry out repairs before the heat of summer. A good memory jogger is to increase shading by 50% around Melbourne Cup day and remove around Anzac Day. Other plants that should be in flower soon are the Australian and South African terrestrial plants including Pterostylus, Diuris and Caladenias and others from the local area, and Satyrium and Pterogodium from South Africa cape regions. Australian native Dendrobiums should be showing flower spikes and will flower through spring. Check for aphids and scale on these plants and control as necessary. As the days lengthen, fertilising rates can be increased. An application of GOGO Juice or Seamungus will act as a tonic for your plants. Follow up with a fertiliser such as Strike Back for Orchids. Take time out to enjoy the spectacular orchid display at the Royal Adelaide Show. If youd like to subscribe to Jons e-newsletter, visit http://www.gardenandoutdoorliving.com/ About Strike Back for Orchids - Available in pellet and liquid form, Strike Back for Orchids is ideal for all potted flowering and fruiting plantsnot just orchids! It is an organic-based, chemically-boosted fertiliser specifically developed to enhance the growth and flower development of orchids, and combines the best of both worlds its organic base provides a full range of plant nutrients in a slow release form, whilst the carefully selected water-soluble nutrients have been added to maximise the performance of each application. Whilst Strike Back for Orchids can be applied throughout the year, the lower nitrogen to potassium ratio has been specifically designed to enhance the flowering process and hence Strike Back for Orchids should be applied at least from February to October each year Seamungus can be applied for the remainder of the time, November through to January. Strike Back for Orchids is recommended and endorsed by The Orchid Club of South Australia Inc, the Orchid Society of Western Australia, the Cymbidium Orchid Club of South Australia, the Cymbidium Club of Australia Inc., the Cymbidium Orchid Society of Victoria and the Cymbidium Orchid Club of WA.

06.01.2022 Its our Spring Show at the Club meeting tonight. Looking good!

06.01.2022 As there's no show on I thought I'd post some pictures. These are the first two of this cross I've flowered . A Gordon Giles cross of Regal Flames 'Queen of Hearts' x Dural Dream 'Picture'. Standard Pinks . Both may be worth another year. There are so many good mid season pink standard cymbidiums flowering these days that you have to judge them hard. As both parents are show winning AM quality orchids I'm not sure either of these are better than the parents.... G. Le Marne

06.01.2022 Champion Table Top Display, Orchids in Fairyland.

04.01.2022 The Flaming Amber ( by John Gate) cross has produced some really nice results. This is a first flowering seedling , a bit too cuppy ( decorative incurve) but attractive. In my opinion -and Ive always got plenty of those - colour and attractiveness is much more important than shape .

04.01.2022 This is the other parent Prized 105

03.01.2022 The first weekend in August we usually host the National Orchid Extravaganza in Dural , Sydney. Not this year.. I hope all our Victorian friends are safe and healthy. Hopefully the show will be back bigger and better next year. Geoff Le Marne

03.01.2022 Following a phone meeting of the Cymbidium Club Committee yesterday, it has been agreed that the concerns around Covid-19 transmission and the uncertainty over the availability of our venue and being able to provide a safe environment for attendees, we have agreed that we will be unable to host our National Orchid Extravaganza for 2020. Apolgies to all, but Im sure you will understand the difficulties facing us in attempting to put on a show at this time. Club meetings remain suspended, as the Council which we hire the hall from has not yet allowed those to reopen. As soon as we hear that we can recommence, we will let you know.
