25.01.2022 Taking anti-depressants and still feeling flat? There is evidence that a combination of nutrients including fish oil can make anti-depressant medications more effective. "By some estimates, two-thirds don't respond to the first antidepressant they try and a third fail to get better after several treatment attempts. 'The implications are that clinicians and the public can consider [adding] therapeutic doses of nutrients such as omega-3s as a potential low-cost approach to reducing depression in people who are non-responsive to antidepressants,' (lead author Jerome Sarris) says."

25.01.2022 I had chronic skin breakouts for years, but not during my teens. It started well into my 20s. I was so upset by my skin and my self esteem really suffered. As a Naturopath, I now work extensively with clients who have skin concerns. I can really relate to the frustration of skin problems as an adult.... I support my clients to optimise their gut health, hormone balance, stress management and reduce environmental toxins in order to tackle breakouts. These same changes helped me to improve my own skin. Here are my top 15 tried and tested tips for troubled skin!

24.01.2022 A ketogenic diet often comes under fire for being full of meat and butter, but there is an extremely healthful way to use dietary ketosis for chronic disease (and trust me, there's vegetables!). In my studies I learnt about using a ketogenic diet for epilepsy, however science suggests it can extend to trauma and stroke. Could the ketogenic diet be a worthwhile treatment option for brain inflammation?

24.01.2022 Your mindset is your collection of attitudeshow you respond to challenges, express gratitude, manage your time, and take care of yourself are just some of the ...parts of your life that you can assess to get a better understanding of your mindset. Our mindset is what brings it all together. We have to get in the right headspace to help ourselves stay healthy and reach our goals. For me, working with someone to create a morning routine which involves meditation, journaling, and movement was a pivotal part of making the most of my days. What has helped with your mindset?

23.01.2022 An almond a day..

23.01.2022 Fascinating new insights about iodine sharing between the mother and foetus as a catalyst for morning sickness!

22.01.2022 With some of the lowest obesity rates in the world and one of the highest consumers of butter, cream and cheese, you'll rarely find a French person counting points, calories or macros. Fun article and genuinely thought provoking.

20.01.2022 Please.. Do not ingest (eat/drink) essential oils without guidance, and do not give them to your children. There is toxicity associated with essential oil ingestion, and just because you've been told it's "safe" because it's "natural", know that it is highly concentrated and can damaging for gut health. In some supplements there are essential oils that are in a specific doses, these are recommended short term only and under the supervision of a professional.

19.01.2022 Are you getting enough Iodine? A trace mineral, essential for normal thyroid function (think metabolism!), is present in certain veg and seafood but it's apparent that we are not getting enough in our daily diets. Good sources include oysters, seaweed (sushi!) Iodised sea salt, dairy, salmon, bread, snapper, cheddar and eggs. So, why is Iodine important?... It is a component of thyroid hormone which is critical for growth and development. Too little iodine can cause hypothyroidism, which is characterised by a sluggish thyroid, tiredness, lethargy, unusual weight gain, depression. Thyroid hormones are also essential for normal development of the brain in the foetus, and recent studies show that low iodine during pregnancy can even alter brain function in the newborn. How much iodine do I need? Adult males and females need 150 ug, with pregnant and breastfeeding mum's needing 250 ug. A nutrition calculator can help you to determine whether you are getting enough iodine day by day. If you are worried you may not be getting enough iodine, chat with a clinical nutritionist or dietitian who will make suggestions as to how to increase your dietary intake.

19.01.2022 Push your inner critic to the side and offer yourself kindness, even when you feel frustrated with yourself.

17.01.2022 Feeling anxious after drinking alcohol? Here's why.

16.01.2022 The "sunshine vitamin" Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin, but it also acts like a hormone. Involved in more than 400 biochemical and metabolic processes in the body you'll recognise it as a supplement most commonly prescribed for bone health. Vit D maintains the balance of calcium and phosphorus which strengthen and grow bones! Vitamin D has an anti-inflammatory role and it can influence conditions with an inflammatory component. It's indicated for the health of the brain..., stabilising mood, helping you sleep, improves thyroid function, metabolic syndrome and associated conditions, autoimmune diseases, skin conditions, lung health, immune system and during pregnancy and lactation. Having adequate vitamin D levels greatly improves the health of your body. To find out what your vitamin D status is, a simple blood test can tell you. Optimum reference ranges are as follows: <25nmol/l DEFICIENT 25-50nmol/l INSUFFICIENT 50-75ng/l ADEQUATE +75nmol/l OPTIMAL How can you boost your vitamin D levels? Estimates range from 10 minutes to 2hrs of sunshine depending on age, weight, skin colour and UV index. In Australia during summer it could take a few minutes in the sun! Supplementation may be indicated, particularly if you are deficient or insufficient. Good food sources include fatty fish, liver, cheese and egg yolks.

16.01.2022 A quality nights sleep cannot be underestimated for our health. Artificial lights from our phones, TVs and iPads can throw out our circadian rhythm and make it difficult to fall asleep. I use a blue light filter on all technology from 5pm (it automatically comes on sunset to sunrise).

16.01.2022 Granola fan? Read this!

16.01.2022 Hashimotos thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease where the immune system attacks healthy thyroid tissue. You'll most likely know or be someone with Hashis, as 1 in 10 people have a thyroid condition. 70-80% of cases are linked to genes. The thyroid gland needs Iodine, selenium and zinc to convert Thyroxine (T4) to the active form Triiodothyronine (T3). This conversion is really important as T3 gives you energy, regulates your metabolism and improves your mood. People wit...h Hashis benefit from supplementing selenium, zinc and vitamin D whilst reducing inflammatory foods from their diet such as sugar, alcohol, A1 casein from dairy and gluten. Optimise your diet to include foods rich in zinc, selenium and iodine to give your thyroid some lovin' and get some sunshine or supplement with Vit D during winter. #hashimotos #thyroid #weightgain #stress #weight #bodyimage #nutrition #mindfulness #meditation #selflove #health #healthy #wellbeing #wellness #healthcoach #wellnesscoach #fitfam #cleaneating #vegan #vegetarian #primal #paleo #whole30 #naturopath #nutritionist #northernbeachesmums #newmum #mom #mum #insomnia See more

15.01.2022 Oxygen is needed to burn the fuel (sugars and fatty acids) in our cells to produce energy. Oxygen is brought into the lungs via breathing, where it is transported by red blood cells to the entire body to be used to produce energy. The Amazon rainforest produces 20% of the Earth's oxygen. As of this moment, space agencies have detected more than 72,000 fires between January and August 2019 and more than 9,500 forest fires in recent weeks, largely in the Amazonas region. Though... rainforests are typically thought of as wet, during the summer months there is little rain, until November. The Amazon is important not only for the air we breathe, but the trees are a critical source of carbon needed for slowing down the rapidity of global warming (yep, it's happening). What can you do? Donate to Rainforest Action Network to protect an acre of the Amazonian rainforest. Donate to the Rainforest trust to help buy land in the rainforest. Since 1988, the organization has saved over 23 million acres and counting. Check with Rainforest Alliance that your paper and wood purchases are rainforest-safe. You can also purchase rainforest safe products from the alliance's site. The World Wide Fund for Nature works to protect the countless species in the Amazon and around the world. Ecosia.org is a search engine that plants a tree for every 45 searches you run. Explore Change.org petitions. Donate to Amazon Watch, an organization that protects the rainforest, defends indigenous rights and works to address climate change. Donate to the Amazon conservation team, which works to fight climate change, protect the Amazon and empower indigenous peoples. Amazon Conservation accepts donations and lists exactly what your money goes toward. 14.01.2022 Recently I wrote a blog post for Northern Beaches Integrative Practitioners on the Gut Brain connection for mood. It was a simple post with a few tips and tricks you can implement now to support gut health. The role of the Gut-Brain Immune axis and autoimmune disease is fascinating, exciting and promising. I look forward to further research emerging in this space.

13.01.2022 Food for thought! Is your plant milk sustainable?

11.01.2022 Anxiety is feelings of intense, excessive and persistent worry and fear about everyday life. 1 in 7 people will experience an anxiety disorder over a 12 month period. The experience of anxiety might feel like a rapid heart rate, shallow breathing, sweating or tremors, inability to make decisions, or feeling overwhelmed and tired. Anxiety is the bodies typical response to a high stress event. It's normal to feel anxious in anticipation for something new, taking a test, m...oving to a new place or being in a race! In some people however it can be consuming and debilitating. Anxiety can stop people from doing things they once enjoyed like socialising, taking care of themselves or even leaving their home. Research shows that a poor diet is linked to the development of anxiety through nutrient deficiencies and altered good bacteria in our gut. Our genes and environment are also involved. Diet and lifestyle changes can significantly help with anxiety treatment as I see with the clients I work with. #mentalhealth #mentalhealthawareness #anxiety #selfcare #depression #selflove #love #health #wellness #mentalhealthmatters #motivation #therapy #mentalillness #mindfulness #healing #covid #fitness #psychology #recovery #wellbeing #ptsd #life #loveyourself #meditation #inspiration #positivevibes #positivity #happiness #quotes #bhfyp

09.01.2022 Are you lactose intolerant? 75% of people are. Did you know individuals with lactose intolerance can tolerate 12mg of lactose daily. That's approximately 1 cup of milks worth. Pure ghee (99 -99.5% pure butter oil) may have trace amounts of casein and lactose remaining, but unless a person is extremely sensitive, it will normally not cause problems, even if other dairy does! Recently I've been using Ghee in my morning coffee- it's delicious! A clean, nutty, rich flavour. Don't be afraid to experiment using Ghee in your cooking- it has a high frying temperature and is a fantastic cooking oil- a staple in Indian cooking and Ayurvedic medicine.

09.01.2022 Can't stress this enough! Variety, colour, fibre are essential for a healthy microbiome. I always tell clients to increase their fibre intake and "eat the " of fruit, vegetables and legumes for happy gut Flora.

09.01.2022 Children need exposure to foods they don't like (ie vegetables!!!!) up to 15 times before they'll eat it. Normalise the food by eating the same meal with them. And don't give up, even when the broccoli gets chucked on the floor for the 10th time!

09.01.2022 "Sugary drinks have been targeted by health campaigners in the battle against the bulge because they are energy dense and nutrient poor, filling consumers up with calories but leaving them feeling hungry. The study, published in the latest Nutrients journal, found "reformulation" would prevent 70,300 deaths from heart disease, 47,000 deaths from type 2 diabetes, 14,300 deaths from stroke, and 24,100 deaths from breast, bowel cancer, endometrial and kidney cancers, over the lifetime of the 2010 Australian population."

09.01.2022 If you see a Naturopath or have experienced Naturopathic care, you'll understand why our profession is so valuable in today's society. Week by week I see patients with various health ailments that are improved through complementary medicine. I am so proud to be a Naturopath. I have a background in complementary medicine research and development and I know there is strong evidence in support of natural therapies. The research reviewed that prompted the April 1st removal of health fund rebates from Naturopathic consultations was flawed (at best) and needs to be reviewed. Read on and sign if this impacts you and your access to Naturopathic care. http://chng.it/2BN4PYP7zB

07.01.2022 Kids can be very resilient, but they do pick up on our stresses. In the wake of Australia's bushfire crisis, many children are feeling scared and anxious. Here are some tools to help them cope with these big feelings.

07.01.2022 We teach our babies and children to self soothe to calm themselves down when they are upset. The process reduces the fight or flight response, our bodies stress activation system. Self soothing is a basic skill, critical for our emotional wellbeing and is generally related to the senses. Different people prefer one sense over the other and what helps me cope with stress may not do the same for you. How do you self soothe?

07.01.2022 I work with a lot of women who have spent years restricting what they eat. Giving yourself permission to eat what you feel like is really difficult (it often seems counterintuitive), but I've never met a single person who wants to live the rest of their lives on a diet. I recommend to start slowly, and I teach my clients these very same principles.

05.01.2022 What does a Naturopath do? (And can't I just go to the chemist and buy supplements instead??). Good question, You! Let me explain: Naturopathic case taking involves an 60-90 minutes of comprehensive questions with all body systems assessed (think brain to bowel!). Physical assessments and pathology analysis are also included. In many cases we recommend further pathology, genetic testing, salivary hormone testing and stool analysis to identify hormonal imbalance, genetic SNPs..., nutrient deficiencies and dysbiosis (imbalance in the gut bacteria). A Naturopathic prescription is personalised and thorough. I send patients away from a consultation with a comprehensive protocol and they come back every 3/4 weeks for up to 6 months of consistent work in order to address health challenges. The difference is that a supplement from a heath shop is generally for symptom management without addressing the root cause (Think Panadol for a headache). It may help for a little while (or not!) but the reality is the prescription is not customised for your very individual needs! If someone recommends a supplement to you as it worked for them (or they heard it was good) it does not mean it will produce the same results in you. We're all unique and our health journey will be too! See more

02.01.2022 BRB- Iso baking.

01.01.2022 Eat your greens! Warfarin is the oral anticoagulant most frequently used to control and prevent thromboembolic disorders. Previous advice was to avoid Vitamin K containing foods (particularly leafy green veg) but evidence suggests eating foods high in Vitamin K can actually stabilise anticoagulation therapy.
